Those are a great series of drills that reflect the skills you really need to move up in the quality of play. The transition zone reset is the skill that keeps you in the game when you are under attack and is the single biggest weakness most of us 3.5 players have to work hard on.

@@tanner.pickleball For the reset game, can you share more about how the person at the net is playing? How cooperative are they trying to be? When the other player has a great reset, the kind where the net player would normally concede the kitchen and just dink it back, how do they play that ball during this drill (since the person in the NVZ is going to stay there)?
@tanner.pickleball
@tanner.pickleball 8 месяцев назад
Great question, sorry I should have clarified. The at the net person should be OVERLY aggressive. Really seeing what they can and cannot do at the net. So when it comes to game time, they know what shots are makeable and what are not. @@dound07

Good stuff. One question though - I’ve been told elsewhere that shallow returns are good drive opportunities (due to reduced reaction time). But in that case I would be driving from the same area of the court that you say not to because they can hit your feet. Could you clarify this? Is it okay to drive on the 3rd but not so much on the 5th or other transition shots?

Let's take a concrete example, Elite Pickleball in Houston TX a pretty good size club, located in an affluent part of a very large city. According to DUPR web site, as of today, out of 236 registered members there are two 6.x rated, zero 5.x rated, and seven 4.5+ rated. We are talking a few percent here. I usually play in the 50+ age group and pretty sure among players in this group none of them will ever get to 5.0. Personally, I know I'll never get to 5.0 in PB, just like I'll never get to 5.0 in tennis or 2000 in table tennis, or run under 8 minutes/mile. Yes, it is that hard and it gets exponentially harder when you get older.

I watched a bunch of people playing and I'm pretty sure I'm a 5 right now. Day two. What a silly game, I'd rather play handball in Brooklyn or tennis again or racquetball. When 80 year olds are playing a sport, that's when you know it's easy. That's real shit right there. Like fat dudes bowling. Ha! I even bought a Gamma 505. Thing feels like a toy. And I call the inner section, "fire," bc it's as gimmicky as calling it The Kitchen. SMH.

But now that you’re done everyone else should be too? What a crazy thought. Just play the game and enjoy it, don’t hate on people who enjoy getting better.

Some decent drills but your transition drill aka 7/11 game is flawed. You have cutie pie feeding you a cupcake starter ball while you are at the baseline and actually hitting a third shot drop not a transition shot. Flawed because you easily made your way to the kitchen without hitting so much as one ball in the transition area.
@tanner.pickleball
@tanner.pickleball 8 месяцев назад
More of just a showing of the drill so you understand it. You can take it as you will on your personal drills!
@davidallott5826
@davidallott5826 8 месяцев назад
Agreed. Tyson has a better progression drill / game where 1 player starts at the kitchen and 1 at the baseline. 3 balls must be hit "cooperatively" before the point is live. Then the baseline player must try to make his way through the transition zone to the kitchen. Either player can win a point by winning the rally. The transition player can win a bonus point by successfully hitting an in ball after establishing themself at the kitchen. The drill where you just stay camped in the transition zone the whole time is actually better for ingraining the skills required to improve resets.
