I don't know why, but I got super emotional at the photoshoot part, like, I started bawling my eyes out. I'm on the heavier side myself and seeing someone with a somewhat similar body type look that gorgeous really hit me hard I guess.

I did this at a studio in Kyoto! It’s not technically proper oiran kitsuke, rather a modern interpretation. Oiran would not show this much skin, wore extremely tall shoes, and significantly more hair accessories. This is a big part of why I chose the oiran package over a maiko or geiko (geisha) henshin package. I wasn’t comfortable doing a photoshoot when maiko and geiko still exist as a profession but oiran are not around any more and the henshin studios are taking creative liberties. If anyone wants to do historically accurate oiran henshin, there is a place in Nikko called Edo Wonderland. Among many historically accurate henshin options for men, women, and children, you can get dressed up as an Oiran for about $300. It’s their most expensive package (and for good reason!) most of the others are around $60. The oiran package is too rich for my blood but it’s still really cool!

If those shoes were difficult, I'm very glad Aki didn't have to have the giant pedestal-type shoes that the top-tier oiran would wear during processions! I've seen videos of reenactments with people wearing those, and I can definitely say I have no idea how they manage it. Also, both Aki and Joey looked amazing during this photoshoot. Such a cool outing!
