I became fluent in Italian in one year (cheesy montage)

Oct 1 2017: I started learning Italian as a complete beginner
Oct 1 2018: I spoke with three Italian teachers for half an hour each, 100% in Italian, and asked them to assess my level. All three thought I had reached a B2 level - the level that most language experts agree is 'fluent'. My grammar was not perfect, but I was able to understand almost everything said to me (or make an intelligent guess at the meaning), and I always found a way to respond and communicate my ideas while keeping the conversation flowing.
I achieved this by working consistently and scientifically every day for exactly 365 days in a row. I averaged about 50 minutes of study per day, sometimes more, sometimes less; over the course of a year this added up to just over 300 hours total. I completed this challenge on top of full time work, full time study, and while also studying for a German B2 exam.
In future videos I will discuss my methods for language learning, so subscribe to my channel if you're interested in that kind of content.
I apologise for the poor sound and video recording quality, at the time I had no plans to put this on RU-vid and also knew nothing about sound recording 🥲🥲🥲
Incidentally, after not using the language much for about 4 years, I decided to sit the official Italian B2 test last year, which I passed. (I made a different video about that.)
All music composed by me, using Logic Pro.
Thanks for watching!

Very inspiring! I share your passion for classical music (pianist here also), language learning, and chess too, I'm so very surprised and delighted to find someone with almost the exact same set of interests!

Nice! I think they compliment each other. Many musicians are also linguists, or chess players (ie Prokofiev)

Hello. William from Chicago USA. I'm ok with learning Italian slowly with Duolingo, but I subscribed to your channel because I am impressed with your willingness to not only tackle difficult life projects, but your willingness to show the sometimes messy progress of learning along the way. Oftentimes we only get to see the finished product and don't get to see the process behind the product itself. Your videos hopefully make true the saying that it's not the destination, but the journey.

Hi from Melbourne, Australia! Thanks for your message - that's what this channel is dedicated to, learning, in all its messiness. I'll be making a bunch of videos on how I learn languages.

Thanks a lot! Production quality is not great 😂😂😂 however I plan to do a similar project with Spanish in the next 18 months which will hopefully be a bit more in-depth

Hey this is amazing to see, Great work mate. I lived in turkey for 4 years and I would consider myself only b1 but i didn't have the drive to keep learning, I stuck at the survival level for quite some time but only now after returning to australia do I want to get to b2/c1 level. thanks for the inspiration :)

Thanks a lot, it's definitely possible especially these days with all the technology and resources we have at our disposal. Let me know how you go with it!

@@Overlearner Totally I will keep you updated. Did you speak with natives online everyday for 50 mintues? I was an english teacher on cambly for those 4 years in turkey and saw a big improvement from the students who over the years stuck at it all the time. (btw Im glad to be back in melbourne even after traveling europe, its a pretty bloody good city to be honest :P)

@@AussieBattleCat Actually no, I only had one lesson a week - 30 min in the beginning and eventually 60 min. Most of my study was self-directed

Why not just immerse in native content while learning vocab (recognition style) in Anki and briefly reading a grammar guide once over? Then put off speaking for 6+ months. Focus on input/understanding. That’s the most efficient method for any language.
@Overlearner
@Overlearner 2 месяца назад
If I did this challenge again I would definitely use more comprehensible input from the beginning. I'm not a big fan of 'recognition' style flashcards as I think it's better to see words in context through reading - also there is definitely a place for deliberate practise. But I do agree, and I'm planning to use a more input-style approach to learn Spanish in the next 18 months.

Very nice! How many hours a day (or week) did you spend with the language? I feel like I am at the same level as you in your spoken Italian despite it taking 4 years on and off! My comprehension is much better of course. I feel like c’è un blocco at times when speaking. I always tell my exchange partners when meeting them: Capisco abbastanza bene, ma parlo come un bambino di due anni. And I believe that may be an overestimation!

Thanks for your comment - I spent around 50 minutes per day on Italian over the course of that year - basically 2 pomodoros

Did you continue to study Italian after 2018?

A bit, but I was focussing on other projects. I got back into it last year and passed the official B2 exam in Melbourne (there is a video on my channel about this)

@@Overlearner Thanks for replying! I saw the thumbnail but I haven't watched the video. Congrats on passing the B2 exam! I know how hard it is to get to that level and how much time and effort it takes. I've never taken a language exam but my day-to-day life revolves around languages as I'm both a language learner and language teacher. Greetings from Germany :)

Just subscribed and going through your past videos. Would you be able to provide some detail on what I assume is a language proficiency standard. I think I've worked out what B2 is, but if you could provide a general overview I'd greatly appreciate it.
@Overlearner
@Overlearner 2 месяца назад
At B2 level you should be able to talk for a half hour or an hour with a teacher, on lots of different topics, and not use your native language at all. If you don't know a specific word, you should be able to find a way to describe it without reverting back to your native language. For example, at B2 level I didn't know the German word for 'lighthouse', but I was able to describe it as 'a tower near the ocean that warns ships that land is near'. B2 does not mean without mistakes, but it does mean that you know enough of the language to compensate for gaps in your knowledge without reverting back to your native language. You should know connector phrases like 'in other words...', 'on the other hand....', 'and above all....' etc that keep the conversation flowing smoothly.
