I think there are themes related to her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal but Taylor is such a good storyteller and will take things from her life to grow them into a different story which is really cool because then it becomes relatable for all her listeners but still unique because of her specific lines relating to her life. and this song is very country vibes :) I love it! Yeah Blake & Ryan are great besties with Taylor, her kids call her Aunt Taylor :) So a lot of people give Taylor shit about her collabs but it always comes out later that the singer she asks to collaborate, she gives them free range to do what they want and many times THEY choose to do very little. like she did a song with Lana Del Rey and Lana said if she thinks the song is great she wont do much and just add her backing vocals. So I think thats the case here. Chris added what he felt was best for the song and Taylor was graciously thankful for what he added.

I didn't realize that Taylor was that close with Reynolds and Lively.

That's cool. I wonder if she realizes the irony of her being friends with the kind of people she's criticizing in this song.

@@pigskinpoetry so Taylor worked hard for her career but her parents worked in finance specifically her dad worked for Merrill Lynch before her career. I don’t think she’s judging the male archetype in her song for having money. She’s judging him for being pretentious and thinking he’s above people cuz he believes he has more finer & original taste. Taylor grew up on a Christmas tree farm and family is very important to her and working hard. So it’s more about him being a snob and pretentious rather than having money. As taylor herself and her friends have money so that would be very hypocritical of her.

The supposition is that since this song is from Red, it was probably about Jake Gyllenhaal, especially since she made sure to wrap the red scarf around the other girl’s neck. A scarf reference means Jake Gyllenhaal. Plus it makes references to his feeling that they were too different because of different upbringings etc, and a guy who values being seen as an intellectual and “hip,” and those are all similar to the way she describes him in other songs. Side note: The point of The Great Gatsby is that they’re all terrible, that’s what Fitzgerald was trying to say. Even the narrator: he’s judging everyone for being awful when he’s just as terrible as they are. You’re not supposed to like any of the characters :) But also, it’s okay to not like the story or Fitzgerald himself since he modeled Daisy after Zelda and borrowed their own romance for the Daisy/Gatsby storyline, which is maybe only a little mean, but he also lifted entire passages of her life and her writing out of her diaries and then justified it by suggesting that he was entitled to her life and her writing as her husband, and that’s pretty yuck.

Thanks for all the info. I suppose in learning because I'm starting to realize some of this on my own. Yeah, I realize all you said about Gatsby. I know we're not supposed to like them. It doesn't make me like the book any more though. I just don't prefer spending time around those people.

I've read that The Great Gatsby is one of Taylor's favorite books. She does reference it sometimes in her songwriting. Watching your Taylor reactions, it seems like you gravitate toward the more popular songs or singles, so I'm wondering if you're interested in venturing further, because there's a lot more to unpack. Also, her live performances are amazing, so I'd love to see reactions to some of those!

Yep, this is from Red - was one of the vault songs if i remember correctly. So the scarf is directly from the song All too well - good job coach! you actually picked up on a lot of stuff. the album red is generally a Jake Gyllenhaal diss lol He's from a v affluent family, silver spoon upbringing who preferred the "indie music records much cooler than mine" ( a We are never getting back together reference too lol) so yeah, definitely not the best song - which is probably why it was left off the og album, but a cute watch

Agree disappointing Chris Stapleton was used as a background singer. Interesting that John Mayer and Chris wrote a song called I just remembered I don’t care which they preformed together at Meyer concert in Nashville. It’s a perfect answer if any of Taylor’s revenge songs are about him.

3 of Taylor's songs are about him. But I wouldn't call them 'revenge songs'. A 32 year old man dating a 19 year old girl who was in hs the year prior is so gross and creepy. And her songs about him, reflecting back on that time of her life and how he pursued her and treated her, point that out. Not really sure how man 'answers' to being fully grown but pursuing a teenager when the teenager writes about it.... or when she wrote about it again when *she* was 32 and realizing that she is now his age when he pursued her and holy moly how young she really was in hindsight.

Dear John and Could've Would've Should've are the two primary ones about John Mayer. Dear John was written during that time in her life and CWS is her looking back at 32 and realizing just how bad the situation really was (fun fact she released the song when she was 32.... it was track 19 on her album... because she's awesome like that). @@pigskinpoetry
