I wanted to show how the 8320 was a better processor than the i3-7350k... so while overclocking it farther I made a stupid mistake and killed it... find out how.

Jay... We don't care if you blow up a million processors, you still make great content. Just keep on going and don't ever doubt that we'll think of you differently. Being honest and posting this tells us you're truthful to us. and I, and many other people, respect you for that. This is like the time you told us that Skunkworks leaked. We still love you Jay.

Power-on spikes are not normal. What happened was your line-load compensation overreacted to the decoupling capacitors' charging current, and gave it juice springsteen volts.
@fd3871
@fd3871 7 лет назад
i feel like his basic understanding of how a power supply works and how a motherboard delivers power to the components is flawed. a massive jolt every time a computer turns on doesnt make sense with linear and buck/boost regulators that are typically used in computers. there was, indeed, probably some juice stored in the caps that when combined with the excessive voltage parameters sent the cpu over the edge of the power it could accept. although if the mobo was smart enough there were probably some feedback resistors measuring the final voltage to the processor and adjusting the output of the regulators; so it could have just been one of those mysteries where the cpu just gave out much like a hard drive that was working and stopped when you turn the system off and then back on.

I can agree that the FX 8300 series is still a great contender for the budget market, and prices are lower now than they have ever been before. While it's true that there's no upgrade path, AMD's price-to-performance is actually going up, and more applications are utilizing available multi-threads than 5 years ago. It sounds weird, but these CPU's are aging like fine wine. It's a shame that this 8320 bit the dust, but overclocking always has its dangers. Happens to the best of us. I recently bought an FX-8300 and have it stable running at 4.3Ghz on air at 1.26v, which I assume is actually quite good. I could probably push it further, but my temps get a little hairy as it is, so I would need a better cooling solution if I wanted to do that. Still, I paired it with an RX 480, and I can run everything I own on Ultra/High and the lowest FPS I've seen so far is about 50. The return on these CPU's is still amazing.

Yes, the AMD FX series are still outstanding CPU's. Specifically the 8320/50/70 (and above) if tuned / overclocked correctly, are as fast as an Intel i7-4790K clock for clock, despite what the so called "experts" claim. So they're budget in price, but NOT in performance. The only caveat is that overclocking the FX series correctly requires a motherboard that can run very fast FSB (Front Side Bus) speed and fast RAM (the only one that I have personal experience with that I know can do both is the ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z). Just overclocking the CPU does not give very good results on AMD FX CPU's (no matter how high you overclock). Neither does just using fast RAM alone, or even using fast RAM with a high CPU overclock. *The only overclocking method that really works is cranking the FSB speed as high as your motherboard will allow it to run stable (250MHz - 265MHz seems to be the sweet spot for best speed / stability range), combined with very fast RAM.* It's that combination alone that solves the only weakness in the FX CPU, which is the internal memory architecture / controller design (which is what causes it to have poor single threaded performance even though it's multi-tasking performance is excellent). Overclocking with this method is the only way to dramatically increase the single threaded performance and overall performance. BTW, when you overclock using this method you cannot run the CPU at anywhere near as high of an overclock as you would when you use the CPU overclock method alone. See next paragraph for an example. I run my FX-8350 at 4.3GHz (4290 MHz to be exact...260 x 16.5), 260MHz FSB, DDR3 2340 MHz RAM (2400 MHz RAM turned down since I run 32GB) and it scores 2.01 on Cinebench 11.5 single threaded, and 9.49 multi-threaded. That is literally almost twice the single threaded performance of a stock FX-8350. An i7-4790K at stock 4.4GHz turbo speed, scores 2.05 and 9.66. That is identical performance since the i7 is actually running at a slightly faster CPU speed. And the FX-8350 is far better at real world multi-tasking. Just a note: I'm an Applied Scientist / Design Engineer and I use this computer as a Design and Engineering Workstation. It runs extremely complex, compute intensive engineering analysis software programs like FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in the background while I continue to use Design and Rendering software at the same time (while listening to music and having multiple browser tabs open) No i7 less than a 6/12 core can do that kind of multi-tasking. Hope this is helpful.
@IronOreGaming
@IronOreGaming 7 лет назад
If you're streaming at a moderate resolution (720p) then it should do just fine. GTX 1050 is a little on the weaker side, but still a solid budget card. If you can afford it, I'd recommend at least going for the 1050 Ti, or better still, the RX 470 has one of the best performance-to-price ratios for 1080p gaming on the market today.

You can tell you're a die-hard PC enthusiast when you mourn the death of your CPU the way you did in this video. It almost looked like you were fighting back tears and choking up here and there throughout the video (I'm guessing because you acknowledged that it was preventable by adding an extra step to the restart process). Props to you for your experimentation and bringing yourself to record this video with how hard it obviously was on you mentally. Keep up the great work. Oh my God! Why didn't I discover this video a year ago? I had the exact same symptom when I built my system and I searched the internet tirelessly as to the cause. I one-by-one RMA'd each component saving the CPU for last, because all the info I could find said the CPU was the least likely culprit. By the time I got it up and running, six months had passed as a result of the RMA processes and shipping delays. Had I pulled the 8-pin CPU cable to troubleshoot, I would have saved myself a ton of time and effort. Thanks for all your cents, Jay. They've been worth more than two. I just finished my first water cooling build thanks to you, and I'm going to create a Twitter account (I hate social media) just so I can send you pictures. Cheers

Nikolaas Brems Tbh, it's performance doesn't really vary much from the 6600k/7600k. I personally ran my 4670k up until earlier this year, I upgraded to the 6600k and noticed only a very minute difference in overall FPS. I will however admit that the newer platform, DDR4 support and Thunderbolt etc are really nice to have available.

Raldi Haxhia Tbh, I would upgrade it to the new Zen CPU's or wait for Intel's next architecture. The lack of features and support is what turned me to Skylake. Personally, if you weren't planning on over clocking and are interested in Skylake, I'd purchase the i5 6500. I upgraded my girlfriend from a 4670k to a 6500 and it performs better within games, is more efficient and allows for the use of newer hardware (I.e. DDR4, Thunderbolt and etc). She didn't overclock it so the "K" series 4670k was a waste for her.

Hi Jay I successfully completed my first build in December. The only reason I can use the word "successfully" in that sentence is because of the fantastic videos people like you, Paul and Kyle put up to educate and encourage first timers like myself. Videos like this one, where you highlight a mistake instead of hiding it, and use it to help guys like me understand what to watch out for and why parts respond the way they do, are a huge part of why I subscribed to your channel. The input feels real, and I learn even more. Thanks for putting yourself out there monetarily and emotionally and helping me learn for free. I appreciate all your work, and hope that you can keep doing this for as long as you want with great success. Here's to many more blown components if they help me learn from your experiences. ;-) Cheers Anand

I'd like to add that I am running the same mobo and I've run into quite a few issues with OC'ing my 6300. at 1 point I had it running stable at 4.4ghz but I was in the process of finding where I wanted my chip to be so I was giving it much more voltage then it needed. I had decided while I was slowly dropping the voltage that I wanted to sit in the middle at 4.5ghz(which is far from unheard of) but knew I still would not need nearly as much voltage and I hadn't touched LLC yet because I hadn't had any Vdroop occur. so my plan was to find the lowest stable voltage and then tweak it up to 4.5ghz. So I noticed that as soon as I got to the point where my chip needed LLC the Vdroop was tremendous I believe I was in the 1.35 range and it was dropping to below stock voltage severely lowering the clock. I was still a little new to OC'ing and wasn't to familiar with LLC(knew what it did but wasn't sure like what was safe etc.) so I looked up specifically how LLC worked on the UD3, and there was a lot of people claiming that it was sketchy because you could fry your chip if a power surge occurs and you were using a lower end PSU. now unfortunately for me I was on a very tight budget and skimped slightly on my PSU and had problems in the past with it and I also live in florida where it seems to storm all the time so I decided to just set the system defaults and avert any sort of risk until I got a new unit.

I just bought an i58600K for my first new rig in over 10 years. I had to learn a lot of new stuff about current hardware, PC building, Intel and AMD's current line-up, etc. I was basically like a brand-new builder and completely naive. Now, looking at the state of affairs between both companies, and having always gone with Intel processors, I will be choosing AMD for my next build. Intel seems to only care about its bottom line and is completely out of touch with its loyal customer base as they have produced several CPUs over the past few years at differing price points that just don't make much sense, not to mention a forced motherboard upgrade scheme (Z270, Z370, 390), the Specter/Meltdown vulnerability, lying/faking their benchmarks, and so on. Sorry, Intel, but you just lost a customer. Thanks, Jay, you're still awesome. Lol

Are you really sure,a problem is in the CPU? In most cases are shorted VRM transistors on the motherboard... If it only, very shortly "blinks", that means, somewhere is dead short! And, if it dissappers with disconnected CPU power connector, it definitely should be one of those cpu VRMs... Try that CPU with different motherboard, there is pretty big chance, a CPU is OK..

Load Line Calibration is supposed to raise volts when under load to bring the actual volts to a constant voltage, not go beyond that number willingly. It does go above that number when decreasing from a load, but there is another safety cutoff for that called VID normally. If you use LLC your VID becomes your idle voltage instead of the peak. Basically when you set LLC voltage as your previous OC V, you are raising the voltage higher than your previous high. Not to mention the possible peak voltage from coming off of a heavy cpu load to light load that happens even with LLC.

wrong 12v is not supplied at all while at standby there is 5vsb which is 5v which is delivered while in standby (and while in S4 - all on) 12v is not on while on standby slap of voltage, peak of power... no, no, no there is PG line on Power Supply, it have purpose, which is explained by its name - Power Good the sole reason for PG line is to signal that power is stable and does not fluctuate and no major spikes should be expected anymore I assure you PG is not just fancy name - it does more then just being there - Main Logic Board will wait for it and will not start booting before it will appear, therefore CPU will not get this on the other hand CPU is powered from 12v rail, is it? then it have to be able to sustain 12v in impulse - it actually (almost) does it, if not for capacitors (yes, they do not only hold energy, but prevent 12v on CPU) Therefore few things happened 1. BIOS had 1.5v programmed 2. this was set on CPU and it was turned on, while doing nothing yet 3. CPU was reset and this actually have killed it as this acts on whole processor at once - there is no way any software can use whole processor at one time, reset does it 4. reset risen voltage beyond 1.5v and this have burnt your CPU

Jay! why you do this? good video as always though, but damn, you're a braver man than I am. personally, I've never bothered pushing my 8350 beyond 4.3ghz as the voltage was getting a little finicky, but in the end I've disabled turbo-core, set it 4ghz even, and set the voltage down to about 1.2v for the sake of not melting everything in it's vicinity. it's presently topping out at about 45c under a basic AIO. I've not seen any difference in performance between 4 and 4.3 either, other than it being ice cool

For anyone who has no idea what he is saying - let me explain it easily. Your lightbulb at home (when off) has no power going to it. When you hit the switch for it to turn on, a LOT of power suddenly jolts through the bulb to turn it on. The filament inside doesn't play nicely to sudden jumps in power (and thereby heat), and can potentially burn out. Your lightbulb usually only burns out when you go to turn it on or off (but mostly when turning it on). Hopefully you can apply this to the video (I know my explanation kinda sucked but whatever).

By all means yes. There are no performance benefits in kaby lake vs. skylake.

Get whatever is cheaper 6600k = 7600k. And as far as Im concerned Kaby Lake also runs at the LGA 1151 socket, so finding a good 1151 mobo is also better, dont just go get the z270 extreme supreme rgb gaming board. Oh yeah, you also have to take into account that the 7600k overclockes at a faster frequency, but real world games will not see much benefit from 4.6 ghz to 5 ghz, but you know, its there to brag. "My CPU hit 5 ghz stable bwahahaha!!!" But I really think waiting for Ryzen is much more worth since it is rumored to release somewhere around March. If you really are impatient though, be prepared to cry at your wallet after seeing price drops.

my fx 8320e is a piece of crap overclocking, the max i can get is 4,6ghz with 1,52v on a hyper 212 evo. more than that... and the temperatures goes to hell. A friend of mine, with the same cpu and MOBO is getting 5,1ghz with the same voltage. At that frequency is kicking some i5 ass

Silicon Lottery my friend...

yeah, but an fx 8320 at 4,7 with 1,56v is too much for any cooler (except for a triple rad custom watercooling).

yeap... silicon lottery is a bitch. In the past i had a phenom II X4 960t at 4,4ghz with the same 212 evo. That chip wasnt even a golden chip, it was a platinum chip. a very good phenom sample hit 4,2ghz and most of it hit 4 ghz. So... i think you have lucky once in a life....

Got my old 8320 up to 5,2Ghz Gaming stable :D Prime and Aida64 runs were pointless since they alway´s crashed. Turned it down to 5Ghz though it got pretty damm got even with a 360mm rad. CPU worked perfectly for 1 year and a half until the Motherboard CPU plug decided to melt :D
