I KNOW you guys have a lot of questions. LOL WTH did we jet for 100? Why not Fix the Jetta? Are you stupid? (YES) LOL We did a more indepth N20 video here ~ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SJ0sVL_Y3FQ.html
Their engine is already a turbo engine. This is likely just a function of them not adjusting the ignition timing to suit. Secondly why they didn't start with a 50 shot is beyond me...
@@HumbleMechanic Respect for the balls to do it, but why you didn't call someone and talk to them or do some internet research first baffles me...If you're aware of the limits of the stock rods being ~400 lb ft of torque, than why not have gone with the progressive nitrous kit from the start? What about the timing/plugs? I'm sure that there's got to be at least a handful of people out there on the VW Vortex that have done similar shenanigans with similar results? I love the S4 and glad that you guys were able to pick it up and stay under budget, but it would've been much cooler to have seen the GTI vs the Civic.
That S4 is what you should have started with. And I own a MK5 Jetta. Speaking of, ready to sell that down tube, turbo, and other go fast parts? 😀 ~Dave
There were lots of NOS lessons learned! We covered in a video that also shows the install. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SJ0sVL_Y3FQ.html
I'm sure there were quite a few lessons learned, but did you guys actually take an hour or two to go scour the VW Vortex for some threads where others had made similar mistakes or installed the nitrous and used it successfully? I haven't looked myself, because I can't afford to take such a risk on my daily driven MK6 GTI, but if I were going to take such a risk I would definitely have done my due diligence and done my research ahead of time. It was entertaining, but sorely disappointing at the same time. It would have been way more entertaining had you guys successfully installed a progressive nitrous kit and been able to use the right spark plugs (probably 2 degrees colder than the original factory plugs like the guy above stated) and with or without timing having been pulled (maybe gotten a custom tune from someone reputable like Stratified).
@@whorutothink in the end this was too much power for the FSI. We were out of budget and likely to lose without the NOS. We shot a little too high though
@@Deutscheautoparts as with the YEARS of experimenting on 1.8ts, 440 lbft of tourque at 3k rpm on factory rods will always break shit. Spraying closer to 5k might have netted a completely different result. WAY too much lowdown torque.
@@nielsdebakker3283 definitely said $1500 for the car and about $1000 for a trans. Later in the video he said he paid 600 for a transmission which he then took the clutches out of.
Beaters are the best. When you scratch it, you don't even care. Oil change? You can do it a little later (15k km instead of 10k km), to save some money. And beaters are usually cheap to maintain.
@@jacobmadafaka8232 yeah, i use to have a 93 525i and i beat on it since / 130k miles to 254k and when the transmission finally went out it hurt like hell
Jet engine people have a perfect euphemism for that blow up... they call it "an uncontained failure". I can still hear the echo from my earlier comments, Charles. Awesome! :-)
I threw a rod driving a car once. It just needed some fresh oil but it was super high mileage and a not so awesome engine to start with and was a manual transmission which was a requirement for me way back then. I was on a road trip back from Austin, Texas and we were about 8 miles from home when, *BAM*, car shuddered horribly, power dropped and nothing worked. I pulled over to the side of the road and oil was on the low side, but didn't seem terribly bad when looking at the dipstick. Wouldn't turn over, so we used insurance to trailer the car back to my house. When they started to wind the car to the trailer we saw all this oil pouring out from the back end of the block. It was crazy. I remember when it exploded all this black smoke started pouring into the cabin and I looked out the rear review mirror and saw what looked like shrapnel scatter all over the road.
@@HumbleMechanic In reviewing the damage to the engine, it’s definitely fixable... just git ur self some JB Weld, and stick it back together. Easy peasy, she’ll be fine 😎👌🏾
@@s3stee straight up man, in Australia even Jetta’s and mk5 gtis are still selling for above 10k in good conditions, an s4 for under 20k these days would be a miracle.
@@Generic4wdGroup I’ve bought a lot of gti’s to part out and unfortunately that’s becoming a reality, the first car I bought to part out at 15 around 3 years ago was a 2010 mk6 gti that was a stat write off which I bought for only $1500,
This...I feel like one of the rules should've been no buying cars from friends because ain't no way a regular dude could find a car like that for less then 5k.
@@HumbleMechanic honestly that would've probably been a better way of doing it but also would've been harder to find a car under $5k since unmodified stock euros/jdms fetch a premium now a days
Ohh god the aftermath!!!! Ironically i was at the dentist yesterday and all i kept hearing was" where is the NITROUS " are we using the NITROUS" " we are going to have to use the NITROUS" 😂😂😂😂 only a select few will understand that when you blow up a euro, you just come back with an upgrade! Cheers! You guys are 🐐🐐 #eurolife
@The Trashman wow dude, I’ve read most all of ur comments. Ur the proverbial definition of a TROLL 😈. Go find some other place to antagonize & instigate.
It's a bummer about the Jetta. I was waiting on the F&F sticker job. Man that S4 transmission is huge!! It's larger then the one in my one ton cargo van!! All of this just reminds me why I prefer old crap, that's easy to work on.
All of the emotions of a build for the price of a RU-vid account (your soul to Google/free)!!! Now THAT'S what I call value!!! Also, them G&G G's are thuper nice for letting you reset your budget.
Now I am even more invested. I have a 2011 Phantom Black S4 sitting on my driveway and a box with the mechatronic repair along with the rest of things needed to finish the job. Looking forward to the next episode.
Lol what about the ignition timing and afr. Seems like blowing it up was the plan with no tuning involved. Also when you wet spray though a intake designed to move only air distribution can become problematic. Start with a small shot, read the plugs and work your way up.
I think you guys made the right choice switching to the s4, those cars with a pulley and tune feel excellent. Maybe install a cheap exhaust cutout for the race
Oooh boiii 😄 Was looking for the Jetta to be Betta. But hey I do like the S4 , probably mid 11s car with pully kit.. Also save the Jetta , throw in a 2.5 Iron block , beefy internals & a turbo kit , but that passes the 5K budget lol.
*puts jetta on craigslist* "needs oil change and possibly a retune, ran when parked. $5k firm this is a solid car and i will not entertain low ballers"
Dude!!! That motor blowing was epic!! 😂😂😂. And the automotive CSI post mortem was classic!! Let us know when you want to do a competition against a stock car! 😉
@@dustyc324 you would be suprised, i started in a euro focused rebuilding shop. got my first audi A6 for 1200$ out the door after repairs, customer sold it for 600$ to the shop. tune up, full front suspension and a used transmission computer was all it needed. body was mint, serra terra cotta chocolate brown leather and 98k on the dash.
@@rickylafleur5823 oh. thats all? lol. was it an S4? and it never broke after that? unicorn. edit. The only good part was the body. says nothing about the quality of the vehicle
Man that civic is going to kick your ass....you might have had a chance with a rabbit or something but not with a jetta or a s4....the damn honda flies...
In a roll race yes. Launching cars is not easy first 60ft usually tells a lot. Although for fwd hondas generally launch fairly well. But the gti dsg can run 0-60 in about 4 seconds with tune. Ive raced a gti i out power by 100hp but 0-60 he wins.. At 70 i walk him...
@@dkis8730 Yeah i would only have changed the intake, maf sensor and intercooler and called it quits if it had approxomatly 300 horses...I dont understand what was wrong with that engine..with the k-04 they should have cracked 300...And if there was any money left i would have tried a 50 shot at the race only
They have a budget of $5k...I doubt that Civic is going to be pulling 10 second quarter miles. People act like every Honda is a 10 second car. I'd be shocked if it even got into the 12s for under $5K. They probably would have had a very good chance if they had run the nitrous in a way that it had been progressively shot instead of dumping the entire shot with the button. It was obvious to anyone with any inkling of knowledge that those factory rods weren't going to hold up to 400+ lb ft. I've got a MK6 GTI and the motor is similar to the one they blew up in that MK5. The rods are a known weak point and the off-the-shelf kits sold intentionally keep the torque down to prevent the rods from breaking.
This feels so deliberate .like you knew you brought a knife to a gun fight with that power to weight .they were both fwd and 4 bangers . Funny how that changed suddenly . You been working on cars long enough to know that hitting that Jetta with that abrupt hit of nitrous wasn't going to end well . Created some dramatic content and got to reset the budget now that you knew what the competition had .
Now you got me curious as to what power levels you could've gotten on a 50 shot ramped up, then to a 100 shot ramped up. Not that the engine or even the DSG would hold those torque levels, but maybe it would've held for a few passes.
The dq250 dsg is very robust and if we’ll maintained and with the proper dsg tune would’ve held up just fine. However the engine and more specifically, bottom end does not like tq down low. 100shot was way too much of a shot to be sprayed down low and was too much of a shock. Like I said rods are a weak point in this motor so anything more than 350-400wtq and your praying to hold it together, that’s hard to do with small turbos that like to make tq down low. I personally have the same car and am deciding on what turbo to get bc I don’t want to build my motor. Cheers, sorry for long response.
This engine came from together hahaha, I have seen a few holes punched in blocks before and/or pistons hammered to death by a broken connecting rod... though this thing grenaded wow. it was together... now its not. lmao I love when he said "unintended rapid engine disassembly"
Some ATL locals were playing with nitrous on 1.8T cars in the early 2000's. You know, to help spool a miniscule K03 turbo faster LMAO. One of them was trying to do a dyno run with a 200 shot (I don't know if it was a 200hp kit, or if they drilled out a jet), which resulted in one of the cylinder walls splitting from the pressure and filling that hole with coolant. A piston hydrolocked and broke the rod, causing the stub on the crank end to saw a big hole in the front of the block. The resulting mess caused Dynolab to drop the ban hammer on nitrous 1.8T VW's.
Yeah I mean the s4 was obviously way too good of a deal even with a bad trans, but it at least makes for a fun series. I mean it was pretty obvious the Civic was gonna walk the Jetta, even with nitrous anyways so
There is a lot of over valuing of a completely undriveable S4. Especially when all the details aren't there. What is teh title status? Are the wheels really worth $1500, or was it drive by feel? Hows the suspension? Is the interior what youd expect from a 3rd owner high line German car? I didn't fit really well in the pace of this video. I might show a little more going on with it in EP4. im still making those choices.
Seriously, Nitrous? Something that these cars are less than known for, and you try it with no experience 🤦♂️ 250-ish whp with a K04 shows that something is obviously with your power delivery. You could have spend that money better on a cheap intercooler, intake, and boost delivery piping, then you would probably would have gotten closer to the numbers you expected. That, or a 100+ octane tune (or w/m) would have been a more reliable route. I guess it's a good lesson of what NOT to do 🤣🤣🤣 Hopefully the Audi is a better option in the end.
@@jmccann6735 So after watching the nitrous video that Shop DAP posted, it seems they were already setup for nitrous when they went to the dyno; they were already committed to going full-send. Still, I would have at least started with the minimum amount listed on the chart for the injector nozzles to try to minimize the risk. It was sad to see that engine vomit and $h*t its insides out, but entertaining at least.
"bunch of rocks in a blender".... Classic.😁👍 Looking forward to the full video of the fail. Go lads, confidence you can get it to track.....and win.😊🤞🤔🤭 PS:.... VERY entertaining and interesting series this.😁
One of the tuning challenges with nitrous is the huge torque spike on activation. When you hit it at low rpm's, it will create HUGE cylinder pressure spike...and here we are.
Its basically a parts car. To get this thing properly road worthy is going to run $8k plus. even then its still a ragged out S4. People forget how little value over high end cars have. especially when they have a serious issue. This car would have been parted out if I didn't buy it.
😭😭😭 NOOoOoo!! Damn iiit... The 2.0t should've been able to handle the 100 shot.. I think what made it blow was the fact that the 100 shot was fully sent instead of being ramped in lol it wouldve been fine if it was progressive.. Oh well, thankfully u guys were able to reset the budget and found the s4! Good luck with this one fellas!
@@Sadik15B Its part manual and part automatic notice the clutch disc are burnt the fluid was over heated hence the black color and the bad smell. The fluid pressure is what locks up the clutches that was burnt so this is why a transmission cooler would be a plus and is would extend the usability oi the oil.
I used to own the S4 V8 and that thing was so heavy, but so much fun to drive. A weight loss plan or diet, strip it of the heavier interior pieces is going to go a long way for you then trying to make more power.
Never thought you'll put Nitro to that mk5 😅, but it was like when you have a field trip for the first time at the zoo all giggles comes out, keep it up Charls 👍
Charles, Been driving through the night(for work) so been looking forward to seeing this vid since reading your post on Instagram…complete destruction like this is impressive…VERY IMPRESSIVE. @@MeltingRubberZ28 sock bottom end with no added ring gap? a 360lb/ft hit at 3000rpm with already increased boost pressure, i would think there is some dice being rolled
@@diesel-technology5507 I guess I would assume the motor already has a decent ring gap since it is boosted from the factory, but that's an interesting perspective. If it was NA and you went turbo+nitrous that's a different story, at least IMO. However this wasn't a ringland failure anyway, the motor simply couldn't produce the torque and snapped the rod. Typically too small of a gap blows the bottom of the piston off.
@@MeltingRubberZ28 yeah the rings didn't pinch in this particualr situation, i was talking about the ls1 engines, but apples and oranges anyway. i would have thought the bottom end would have been up to the challenge in all respects given it was boosted, ring gap, rod strenght....given the stock fuel pumps are literally rated to 250 crank hp or there abouts, i would assume the bottom end might have only been designed to support that too. danger city when adding nitrous lol
yeah here in germany we get 400HP out of a BPY engine without NOS... working on flowrestrictions and reprogramming the ECU is the main approach here, and obviusly the stock turbo has to go.
Nitrous is fine, but you have to be smart about it. Always run it with a tune for nitrous, and have the slow ramp up etc etc, hitting it too low in the rpms does crazy things to cylinder pressures iirc.
The fact that your a VW master tech. Everything you do is done right and your on your second car. I would say you've already lost to JDM power hahaha ,but hey you've lapped then in the awsome beard race 🏁😉
THANK YOU for not blaming nitrous! Nitrous is an amazing tool, just requires a very specific environment to work efficiently! I was really hoping that car was going to make huge numbers!!!!!
