FYI - the alternator/battery light was illuminating while you drove it. Nice find for $1000. Has a couple of winters left in it.

My suspicion with the misfire on all cylinders was low voltage, so a failing alternator would make sense. Get a low mileage OEM replacement on eBay for $30-80 is what I always do. Screw parts store alternators.

@@802Garage Agreed on diagnosis and repair. I have mostly panther body stuff - so I have a few low mileage accessory drive components - AC compressors, alternators, starters, etc. Part store rebuilds stink.

@@NickMyers1 I have seen so many people have to replace brand new or reman alternators from the big chains within a few months it's crazy. They only get away with it because of the warranties. I'd rather rebuild one myself or take my chances with a 50K mile used. Hahaha.

@@chrispellicci6587 true. But Subarus simply aren’t as well engineered. More problems more often. Like Chrysler products. Even well maintained vehicles from Subaru have problems. My 2015 Forester had 2 cvt failures under warranty, wheel hub failures, severe oil consumption. The oil consumption started on day one. Subaru bitched and moaned and fought me like I was a criminal when I demanded repairs. Kept wanting to place blame on me even though my records were meticulously documented.

Couldn't disagree with you further. From my family's experiences owning at this point 30+ Subarus, most of which were bought with high miles, daily driven hard, and put away wet until well over 200-250K miles. In my experience, brands like Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, BMW, VW, and others have issues anywhere from 50-100K miles that I have never experienced in a Subaru. Even brands like Toyota and Honda which can be incredibly reliable can also be far more expensive to repair than Subaru. Simple things like gas tanks or fuel pumps can be exorbitantly expensive in comparison. Plus in general Subaru has been the easiest of any brand for me and many mechanic friends to work on. Our stories are all anecdotal and confirmation bias. While Subaru varies over time, it pretty consistently rates in or near the top 10 most reliable and longest lasting brands with some of the best resale value and has often been near the top of the list. Just have to know which years and models to buy and avoid or what the specific problems are. Most issues are not insane fixes nor insanely expensive and once done once the cars can go hundreds of thousands of miles.
@802Garage
@802Garage 2 года назад
@@chrispellicci6587 Every single engine with a timing belt is notorious for timing belts. Subaru timing belts need to be done every 100K miles just like every other brand and they aren't that hard to change. Really have no idea how it has become stuck in people's minds that this is a Subaru specific thing when it has been common in almost all brands especially through the 90s and 00s. I have almost never seen a Subaru timing belt fail prematurely and I have seen them go well over service interval. Like you said, lack of maintenance will bite you!

I bought and fixed up a 2002 Outback L.L. Bean edition with the H6 a couple years ago. Mine had 267k on it and had a bad timing chain. Once fixed, it ran like a top. And the 4EAT is one of the smoothest automatic transmissions I've ever felt. I also say this with my experience as a Honda tech who also worked on plenty of Nissans and Toyotas with CVTs before becoming such. CVTs aren't bad transmissions, but they need their fluid changed every 30k if you want them to last. Subaru decided to sell their CVT as having "lifetime fluid", which is only true if you want a much shorter lifespan than otherwise. Change your trans fluid (and all your other fluids) at a decent interval and your car will last you a long time
@mds2465
@mds2465 2 года назад
rattling is loose heat shield bolts. super common on Subarus. They call it the Subaru rattle. My moms 2013 OB does that and I believe her former 2010 did that as well. I need to see what I can do about that. But yeah rust is super common as well. No question. Thankfully my mom's car does not have that problem even though we live in CT. I've always been very conscientious about car washes, especially during the winter months. As for the power steering, I have seen that whine happen before. Perhaps you could just be low on fluid. I would say top it off and see if that helps. Do check the power steering rack and hoses as well of course.

Had a 2010 Forester, bought used w/109.000 miles on it. Around 120,000 started slowly losing antifreeze, never did find where it was going. One day on a short trip engine light started flashing and cruise wouldn't work. Drove it back home, checked codes, cylinder misfire. Went to change plugs (miserable to get to by the way!), found oil in a couple of the plug boots. Also had some tranny issues and developed steering issue around 138,000. It also developed a crack in the windshield too. Then there's the infamous Subaru exhaust shield rattle, and the rust issue (I'm in northern NY). Traded it 16 months ago for a 2017 Kia Sportage which has been great so far.

For the last 3 years my in-laws have had an 11' Outback which was also losing antifreeze but there was no white smoke coming. We refilled with Antifreeze a couple times then noticed the dummy temp light would randomly come on then off. Took it to the shop and of course it was the HGs. Less than a year later it also blew a radiator hose. Hasn't had any issues since then (knock on wood) It infuriated me how Subaru thought it was ok to get rid of the temp gauge on a car with an engine known to have HG issues.

Common thing with older Subarus, since the engine is flat all of the fluid tanks sit above the engine. These tend to leak onto the engine and degrade things such as headgaskets.

High key impressed with the wood you used as ramps. It's trashed because it's so new and only $1,000 hehehe. Great deal though even if you parted it out. If the transmission is having issues, it's most likely the valve body due to a failed solenoid and not the entire transmission. The fix is around $300-750 in parts and a bit more for fluid. Definitely something you could handle and way cheaper than a new transmission. MrSubaru has multiple videos on it including "Subaru TR690 CVT Valve Body Replacement" though make sure which trans you have based on year and all. The multiple misfires is likely due to a voltage issue at some point or simply badly needing plugs. You're 100% right there are crazy Subaru owners who will defend the brand no matter what, and it's hilarious they didn't watch the video and see you were actually pretty nice. That said, if you bash any car brand in the title, you're bound to get sycophants. Think about what would happen if you made a video called "Why Chevy Sucks" on your channel. Subaru def has its issues. The newer generation vehicles are pretty solid. It's the first few years of the CVT that have common valve body issues. Relatively few engine or other major issues that I know of. Still easy to work on and logically laid out which is a lot of why I still love them! I think you can definitely make some good money on this one. Oh and the not starting thing, if you happened to push the gas down, you may have activated "flood clear" mode where the injectors do not turn on. So probably nothing. Look forward to seeing you fix it! They are definitely useful rigs and fantastic in the snow, even if they have other issues. Hope it will be a good car for someone.

Common issues on these are Valve Cover and Head Gaskets. Way more often than other brands. The flashing Battery light when driving on throttle and other lights when idling but giving throttle are indicative of a bad ground(s) and or a bad alternator. If not rectified I can picture a computer getting imporper voltage and having more than just a MIL pop on. (so first thing is check and clean all grounds and battery cables/terminals as your first starting point, that might resolve most if not all of your MIL issues. Then throw in a bottle of cleaner into the gas, as the gas may just be old [anything more than 30 days old (personally I have bad experiences with more thna 2 weeks old) with that garbage Ethanol in it starts to go bad without stabil in it.]

The Lovely Bride's son owned (notice the past tense) an '05, 4dr, Subaru that was the same color inside and out and identically, from what I could tell from the video, equipped as yours. However, his car was a sedan. According to him the original tranny bit the big one at 50,000 miles. The "certified" replacement lasted just 10,000 before going full grenade. A third transmission, also "certified", was purchased and installed and was still functioning properly when at 85,000 miles the engine (the dealer serviced from new engine I must point out) turned into a brick when everything that seemingly could lock up did just that. Since NOBODY wanted to work on the car, he ended up selling it to a junk dealer for $700.00 and used that money, and some from his savings, as down payment on a new, pretty much base model, Mitsubishi that now has about 65,000 miles on it and has shown no sign of failure to date.

I do not like Subarus either. However, my aunt had a 2011 Outback Limited up until a year or 2 ago when she traded it in with 90k miles on a brand new 4runner. Never gave her any issues. The real mindblower is that my friend had a 2011 Premium Outback in the same blue in the video, for her first car. They bought it with 200k in 2018 from a notoriously bad B dealership. However, she sold it in January with 323k miles, and was still running. That car was HORRIBLY abused by the original owners, and she didn't do much maintenance on it either, but it treated her well, and never quit. She now has an 09 Camry V6. So even though I don't like Subarus, I will say that they made some good cars.

PO700 is a generic transmission code. Pretty much meaningless. You need a better scan tool that can access the tcm. Probably a fault in one of the solenoids on the valve body. Solenoids are not sold individually. Subaru will only sell you the entire valve body which is almost $800. Swapping the valve body is pretty easy. TR580 valve body is on top, TR690 comes out of bottom pan. Might be worth find a junkyard solenoid and testing the resistance. Hardest part is getting the top cover off in a TR580, I use a small slide hammer with a hook tool but be gentle. Lol

I honestly can never recommend a subaru to any one I like. For me its just the way the engine is designed, how the bodys rust, and just fall apart. I know some of that is from the owner. But they just seem so overrated. The boxer engine is an old, inefficient design. They still burn too much oil, not all but a lot. and the head gasket issues that just never end. They claimed they fixed that but not really. I have a 09 2.5 ej motor in my basement right now that I just did head gaskets on. My father in law had the engine replaced in his 2014 Forester for oil consumption, and right now that engine still uses over 2qts every 3-5k From a mechanics point of view I could never own one. But just my own option. I know Vermonters love those cars so should be a good flip.

Had a few late 90s/early 2000s Subarus and they were very good winter cars but both were expensive to own. Between head gasket, timing belts, exhaust issues, front cv axle shafts etc, it added up. I don't think I will get another one even though consumer reports gushes about how good they are...
@luisinhoens90

easy as that, CR doesn't cover car ownership beyond 3 years. Most Subarus are reliable under 5 years. They start to fall apart when approaching age 10

Good deal ARV. Agreed Subarus are a p.o.s, had one, never again, found out the hard way their dealers are also p.o.s's. And the fan boys and gals are generally people that don't do their own maintenance, and justify the burning they get at the dealership by trolling anyone that knows the reaming they're getting on their 'bu'. Always exceptions, I know. But mpgs in the low 20s in a 4 banger, slow as shit, blowing head gaskets, catalytic converters, and cvts, eating headlight bulbs, and according to the company and their dealer svc. there's no common problems?, come on. "But it's so good in the snow". Yep, like every other awd high ground clearance vehicle with decent tires.

Craziness. Late comment, but this thing is trashed 😂 After 2012 they seem to have gotten incredibly better. I've had a 2013 outback for many years with 130,000 miles, only had to replace wheel bearings so far. I've also taken much better than average care of it, so, mileage may vary. Sad to see one so trashed at that mileage but it's certainly possible I guess

I wish you luck on this one just not a fan of Subaru owned two myself paid $125.00 for a wrecked one once a 1987 legacy wagon bought from the insurance company back when you could do that I fixed it ran it for awhile it had around 80k on it. It was the best Subaru I ever would own. And then came the 1999 Subaru wagon just to keep it short owned it for one year and got rid of it. Never again. And yes they are rust magnets all I can say under coat and religiously touch up annually. For a Japanese car all I can say is disappointment.

CVT are a great idea, too bad nobody makes a good one, sure some last but they have a high failure rate, look for a used one in a junkyard, none to be had, cars with a bad one are junked, and any of the good ones are snapped up as they fail so often. not a Subura thing, many brands used and still use them. Not a fan of the brand either, but I can say they are easy to work on, you can pull that engine in a few hours so you can redo heads when it WILL need it (maybe the new ones dont?).

I noticed on almost every Subaru that I have worked on, the second start after clearing codes will do what yours did and fail to start the first try. It gets you too because it starts fine right after clearing them. I have a 2005 Outback XT.

Living in CT we get the snow and salt. and my car is a Garage car. My outback is a 2012 and really looks like new still. My friends keep asking if I will sell it. lol NOPE. the AWD is just so good.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it needs a valve body. That P0700 is a generic ECM code telling you the TCM has a code stored. You may need a better scanner that can read the TCM. My beat would be a duty lock up circuit code. But I’ve definitely seen a failing alternator cause random misfires. Also check the power steering pump they have an o-ring on top that deform over time. If it’s leaking at the front seal trash it and drop a new one in.

no subbies rust a lot like a lot that's their downfall but there are many ups if you had the 5-speed or a true auto, not a CVT you would be in better shape also the ll bean model is a 3.0R flavor i wouldn't worry about any of them scratches that's like the perfect shell to do something with i would like take all that rocker plastic covers off and rust mort it all and than go over everything with dead liner any color black is bad in the summer but if you have AC its ok and from there put it on with a pair roller and make it into an Overlanding/trail toy, to were you can put a roof top tent or even a ground tent and a fridge/freezer on 12 volts and go out and explore that are amazing getting into places and when you get 20/25 mpg with a 29 to 30 inches tire its even better this also applies to chevy tracker but trackers are more gutless but they are little mules in the bush dont try to do high way miles in them with a tall tire your winding the thing out lmfao back roads only subbie as a big more power and a taller gear to beable to do this

So for the fact thats its lacking power, if yu want more fun yu can try to find s 3.0 or 3.6 flat 6 engine. Those are really fun. Also for the engine struggling to restart thing, thats just nornal with a Subaru each time you clear off the check engine / reset the computer. Also know that you might need to let it idle for a good 15/20 minutes so that the computer can re-learn its idle

Subarus are just trash. The reason they are still around is because of the people that only buy Subarus. I worked for a Subaru dealer and the clientele is very strange and yes most of the people that own them think they are better than everyone else. The mechanical issues they have are ridiculous and should not be so common but they are...I have a friend who had a 2012 outback I worked on many times and it was always stupid crap that needed replaced. I think a grand was a little high honestly for that car because they aren't really worth as much as people may think. I'll stay with my GM and Lexus/Hondas
