I really want to do the restoration. I know it will take 12 months + and probably end up costing way more than I expect. Let me know your thoughts!

Hello Elliott! I am no expert by any means, but one of my hobbies is a race called the Gambler 500. You buy a car for $500, race it 500 miles off-road, and the finish line is a junkyard for all the cars that don't make it. Obviously my cars are not full restorations, and they're in far worse shape than yours. However I will say that I was surprised how fast the cost of all the small incremental parts added up. Things like fluids, belts, and anything rubber should really be replaced if you intend to make it fully reliable. The #1 piece of advice I can give is to do a compression check on all 6 cylinders before you commit any money to the project (I speak from experience on this). If the engine is bad that obviously raises the effort and cost significantly. My second piece of advice is to space the major work out and keep the car drivable for as long as possible. Once again, speaking from experience, when you do something like pull the engine out and the car just sits, you lose a LOT of your enthusiasm for the project. I suspect that many of the abandoned project cars languishing in barns and sheds suffered this fate. One benefit you have is living in the UK, parts and spares should be more available. However 1977 was a long time ago and the Reliant Sceptre is no Mini or MG. What I mean is that things like interior and exterior trim, bumpers, and other model specific things might be hard to source.

Hey Elliot, that’s so cool you want to get into restoring old cars! I recently started on an eerily similar project and I can tell you, it’s so much fun to learn about everything. Don’t worry to much about that rust, on my car it’s way worse and in way worse of spots but I know it’s all fixable. I wish you luck finding a good place to work on your beautiful car. I can’t wait for more update videos in the future!

Man that's pretty. My Grandad had a MK2 Triumph Stag in British Racing Green which I was hoping I'd inherit one day, but sadly, it ended up rotting away in his garage because he couldn't afford to maintain it. He ended up selling it to a guy who had been badgering my grandad to sell it to him for years, last I heard he was restoring it to keep. I'd love to have enough money to buy it from him, the sentimental value is so high for me.

Hey Elliot, I’m a mechanic, none of that rust looks to bad at all, to start if there’s no salt on your roads I’d buy a engine degreaser or heavy duty degreaser of some kind and pressure wash the engine bay if you want it to look nice, wouldn’t mind at all helping you out if you had some mechanical questions, but I’m not an expert on that car particularly.

What a lovely car! I just LOVE Birtish automotive "manufacture" from 70s and 80s! I'm looking forward for car restoration project videos! Good luck! That surface rust - i am almos sure, that there will be some holes after you'll remove it, however - go ahead and dig into the project. There will be a lot of sweat, swears, tears, pain but satisfaction at the end. Also - first thing in that project - in my opinion - will be to set up "good enough" point in your mind. Remove all that rust from underbody, make sure car is safe to drive and just enjoy this gem.

Just because they have concourse examples they never drive doesn't mean yours i scrap in comparison! The mounts obviously need to be addressed and you're correct on all the fixes that need to happen for that. The engine looks great honestly. Some bits I would replace just because but nothing require. Outside looks INCREDIBLE. Good buy man.
