It all depends if you have the black box under the driver side dash but Keyless entry is a breeze, if you find the genuine key fob for that year. All you have to do is jump the 4th and 8th pin on the obd2, you'll hear the locks cycle and then you hold the lock and unlock on the fob.
Love the truck.. i have a 1997 K1500. Sadly mine was only $750.00 and came with a sweet blown motor! lol In three yrs id say im into it about $13-14k... maybe more.. but as you stated the value of these trucks in the next 10yrs could be pretty solid. In ever plan on selling mine.. this is a dream vehicle of mine. Enjoy the build.. ill be subscribing for sure!
Glad to see someone else who’s got a little sentimental value outta these OBS’s my first truck was 95 c1500 wt as well inherited it from my gramps and had it ever since never let me down
Just got a 98 5.0 5sp 4wd Chevy Cheyenne with tow package & leather seats, new 31.10.50 15’ tires on nice aluminum wheels with cowl hood and really loving it. It drives and shifts so well. Only issue with my truck is driver door handle. It’s had cats removed and replaced with straight pipe with sensor drilled into the pipe with stock muffler and it has a true cold air intake. 285,000 miles but motor is quiet like the sound of it and so far not using oil or leaking any. I couldn’t be happier with the truck, I love it. I didn’t realize that they came with a vortec 5.0, they must be good engines
I had one of these with the storage box, the lid didn’t stay on very well, definitely recommend dropping the spare tire so you can get a good look at the crossmembers and also makes running a dual exhaust 10x easier
As far as your keyless entry look in your glove compartment at the rpo codes. See if you see the code AU0. If it's there then it has keyless entry. Then it's as simple as buying a remote off ebay and then looking up how to program it. Its very easy.
I have 98 K1500 as well and I'm redoing everything on mine; plan on raptor lining the entire truck from the frame on up. Just now reworking the cracked dashboard and i think i did a Damn good job overall. To be continued
I just picked up one for $1200 a 96 z71 silverado 1500 it had little details like the fuel gage and temperature gauge didn’t work and it needed ball joints and hub but the truck started and ran so iam so excited to start a new project
I have a 98 k1500 I bought when I was 16 years old in early 2012. Paid 2250 for it. Needed all the ball joints and tie rods, wheel seals and brakes. Its a 4x4 but not z71, however it has all the skid plates and the same wheels, and I bought heavier duty shocks so its basically a z71. Also has the big radiator with the trans and engine coolers built in. Being in Canada the rockers and rear fenders are rusted out sadly. I picked up some 17 inch rims from a cateye and put 34s on it, they just fit with a torsion crank and still rub a bit. Coming up on 400k kms and its extremely reliable. My truck had power locks but no keyless entry as well, but when I got an aftermarket command start I got the guy to hook up the door locks to the command start fob.
I also have a 1997 K1500. I inherited it from my late brother. It is a nice-looking truck, maroon, and gold. There are a few quirks about it. For example, only one speaker works, buttons missing from the stereo, and there is an airbag light on the instrument panel. No rust. The main thing that I would like to change about it is to eliminate the brush guard bumper of the front.
I had been searching for my dream truck for five years. Mostly because I wanted a very specific set up. I got mine for $2,300. It is a 4x4 5 speed 👍. It needs quite a bit of work done, but I'm okay with that since I aim to keep it till I die. These are great trucks and very versatile. The body lines are my favorite. I'm planning on dropping a crate motor in it and a 35.000 trans. Plus much more goodies as I go. It'll take some time and money, but will be totally worth it in the end. I prefer the crew cab for the extra space so I can store tools inside. The all manual set up is the best one in my opinion. Less failures and more balls.😊
Am working on 92 regular cab white from Canada and yes your right these trucks are probably the last easy wrenching do it yourself truck and damn near impossible to kill.
In about 2 weeks my 97 Chevy C1500 stepside will be done after getting out the LPG system. Then I have my new car/truck! My first truck ever got. Cant wait!
I bought a 98 k1500 Silverado (copper colored) extended cab 4x4, 3 door, with black tint Windows, and tan interior. Came stock with a 5.7 vortec with dual exhaust. I been commented on how clean it is. It looks like it never touched a mud puddle and very well maintained. I raised it up 2" but eventually going to a 4" lift. I don't want it to tall. I replaced the stock rims to polished aluminum/black rims with 31's, wrangler off road tires. It has a keyless black box start up under dash so its missing something other than the start up remote to be operable. I haven't figured out what else it needs yet to make it work. I bought it for $6,000.00 with 160,000 mi. It now has 210,000 mi. It has the front bench seat (cloth). Im looking to replace with bucket seats and reapolster to leather, or vinyl. Im hoping to restore with tilt front end and lift box kit for show. Also would like to change the truck bed to wood bottom with stainless strips, like the old 60's C10 trucks had. And cowl induction hood. All for show. Followed with lots of chrome. "Im a chrome guy."
I had a 97 k1500 from the original owner with around 110k. It was my baby and some drunk b ran a red light and totaled my girl 😢. It was the sane green and z71 package as well. These were my favorite trucks growing up probably because of the commercials but they still remain my favorite "newer" chevy trucks out there. Something about that square body box Chevy and they still had the 350 ❤
I have owned Ford, Toyota Tundra, and 2 1998 Chevrolet Silverado both z71 and 25004x4 the 2500 I still own both were and are perfect . Best truck ever imo the 98 chevys never let me down .. ever ! Take care of it and it will take care of you. Give it a name. Mine is BamBam and I get an offer about once a week for her
Man I couldn't believe it when this video popped up when I searched for 1998 Chevy Silverado Z71.... I literally bought a 1998 Chevrolet K1500/GMT-400/Z71 Silverado/ 1st Gens...😂.. but all jokes aside its the exact same exterior color as yours Extended Cab Z71 3rd Door.... I have light gray leather interior, keyless entry, complete factory AM/FM/Cassette then factory single CD player under the HVAC controls... everything is completely stock except the air intake system was changed over to K&N but it looks exactly like the factory one just says K&N on it.. it's a 1 owner truck extremely well maintained mechanically, has small dent under driver side back window where deer hit truck, and rocker on passenger side has rusting at very bottom but can fix all that stuff myself, it has 307,000 Highway miles on the chasis and body, but motor, tranny, and transfer case refreshed last year along with all new front suspension from GM.... best part is I got it for $3000.....
Also on the jump door I had the same problem and through you tube I found that over time the push rod bends. I opened it up straightened out the push rod a little and it’s working great. Easy fix!! I’m looking at sending it back to the 90’s chrome double roll bar, KC lights, chrome tubular nerf bar and a simpler brush guard. Going to keep the original wheels but add a pioneer apple play Rockford speakers.
The short list of issues you may have with this. The most common and I have had them. 1) Ignition module 2) Distributor 3) windshield wiper motor... Good luck.. Nice looking truck..!
Yep great trucks I just bought a 97 2 1/2 years ago I love it won't give it up for nothing I'm also an installer for alarms and keyless entries I can tell you how to do that easy enough but good luck with your new truck looks great that rustic of them extensions there's a big thing of foam in there you need to remove that and treat the inside of that because otherwise spraying over that is not going to do any good
That's a 3/4 ton as evidenced by the curved spoke wheels. The 1/2 tons such as my '97 had the straight spoke mag wheels. I like the green colour but I'm not sure about the opening rear door. It's nice of course if you're a family man or have a lot of stuff to carry in the rear seat. But in my case, as a single guy, I wanted the extended cab mainly for attending large automotive swap meets and sleeping overnight in the back seat. Saved a lot of money on motel costs that way since I'm not too tall to fit the seat. Maybe the opening rear door might add to the value of the truck. But I also figure that it's one more thing that may need fixing and I've probably saved a bundle that way. And I don't intend to sell the truck anyhow.
Bought the 97 chevelet 167k for 5 grand I love it does have custom exhaust and no cat on it. Sounds badass got it cheap Because of oil and coolant leak am getting it looked at hope it's not a pain in the Ass to fix.
Nice truck and great buy. I just picked up a 99 Chevy Silverado Lt 4x4 or z71. Paid 2k and it’s amazing. All it needs is a transmission. That will cost me about 1.5-2.000k $ only 😊. Wish I know how to make videos like you bro 🤙🏽 Keep them coming 💯
On our 1998 K1500 with the 5.7L the ABS light is on and the speedometer is fluttering all over and causing the transmission to shift up and down randomly and kick off the cruise control. Have you had this problem before? We replaced the VSS and the ignition wiring harness, but that did not fix it.
man, im staring at 1997 1500 4x4 manual transmission with 260k on the ticker and they are asking $2400. Its rough, dents in the rear truck panels, rust on at least one extended cab lower panel and needs tires and a muffler. also said thier is a bearing noise in the transmission but hasnt affected driving. not sure if I should bite the bullet. offered $2k but owner holds firm at thier price. not sure if i should walk away. nice piece you have there, bit jealous i can't find deals like that around here.
I’m fixing up a 1996 GMC like yours but indigo blue. I’m subscribing to see more of this build. I would like to see the body work done on here as I have to do the same repair on my drivers side read cab corner. That seal on the roof above the drivers side rear window leaks on all of these extended cabs and causes the cab corner to rust out.
Don't call it an OBS you make me feel old lol. My first truck was a '98 Silverado just like this one different color. Going to look at another one tomorrow hoping it's as good as the lady says it is. 🤞Nice review. 👍🏻
Hey Bud I have a 1998 GMC Sierra 1/2 ton with a tow package I ordered special in 98 it still looks brand new. Try to leave your truck stock. Because I my Black GMC Sierra is all original and looks great. Always having some asking me if I want to sell it.
I have a viper alarm on my 98 k1500 and it has a keyless entry style just like the factory one. Only thing is you can’t lock the doors when you’re in it.
@@beardedreviews it had an alarm and the fobs were junk so I was replacing it. I honestly thought the keyless entry was standard on those. Not sure on mine.
Love the truck brother.. The value of these trucks are going through the roof as more and more are crushed at the wrecking yard.. I make a killing on ebay selling the parts off these trucks!
@@beardedreviews Yah just started my channel and trying to fill the gap on trucks 88-94. Nobody is showing the gauges and light switch repairs needed to fix them..
Hey bud I have a 1998 GMC Sierra 1/2 ton pickup I special order it when bought it brand new. And it still looks like brand new with 156000 on it. My advice to you is to keep it and keep it stock! Let me know if you would like to see my truck?
My dad had one of these same gear same color even he bought it in 2000 used with under 1k miles I grew up in it I was born in 05 only problem he ever had with it was when the transmission went out in less than 2 months from December of 2012-February 2013 was a great truck I miss it my dad traded it in for a 2013 f250 I love them both and have great memories with both
If your going to do anything as far as lift don't buy a leveling kit all they do is wear out suspension parts and rides rough it cost a little bit more money but it's well worth it to buy a suspension lift for these OBS trucks. That's just my two cents. Good looking truck though.
@@beardedreviews sounds good it was a suggestion my dads 1999 c/k1500 has the stock radio with casette player and cd player which is a good thing I got casette tapes and cds. I may also rip it out the truck before the truck goes to the scrapyard
I have the same truck ,120,000mi. i ordered a keyless entry on mine it was an option it has a lock un lock fob that goes on your key chain separate from the key .also have the duel battery setup .It was an option and comes wired. You can run another from possetive wire to the extra lug at the fusebox, then another from neutral to a ground i used the nut on the altonator, they offered that as part of the trailer tow package i also have the original dealer showroom book that shows all the options the 98 offered ,BE CAREFULL MESSING WITH THE PLASTIC ROOF headliner when uou replace the speakers ,they crack very easly!
Yea I really wish mine had the keyless entry. Just that touch would make it feel way more modern. I almost cracked my top plastics as well when replacing the speakers lol.
I also had a 96 but it was totaled in a accident thats how i got the 98, i ordered it from chevy and waited 12 weeks for it i was at the dealership when they unloaded it 5 miles on it ,two things chevy would not do for me 1 they wouldnt put in the larger gas tank ,or the duel tank setup ,2 wouldnot put in the 454ss moter
I have one just like it, I haveca little problem, the black canister next to the radiator floods with gasoline, and the truck shuts down, I dont know why.😢
Nope. I have theee very last K 1500 4x4 350. LS 5.7 Z71 1999. Vin#GCEK.. I HAVE THE LAST ONE that rolled off the assembly line. Made in Texas. Still . You got a great deal on that truck. Mine is a Vortec as well. I have 2 batteries under my hood. It came with the truck and was mfg. With 2 batteries. I have the AUTO SPARK ignition system as well. I bought it brand new in 1999 picked it up in Texas at Sue Hartman Chevrolet dealer. My Chevy is light drift sand metallic and is the 3 door with dual exhaust large bell tipped exhaust and all custom 3 unch lift with a trail boss tool box and highly customized .
