Meanwhile down here in crime ridden South Africa , where even auctions rig their prices, I paid the equivalent $5500 for a total wreck of a 2000 Tacoma/ hilux gen 3 2.7i rwd 5 speed with bent frame and a non runner. Literally everything had to be rebuilt. You guys are so fortunate to pick these things up for almost nothing. God have mercy on our land and its people lol.

Nice! Wondering if you can somehow rig up the truck bed to use as extra cargo storage for a camping trip? Weld a hitch attachment and set if up w a matching paint job and wheels.

Austin a little tip regarding your concrete blocks stabilizing the parts truck, always stack the blocks as they would be used in building a foundation. The way you have them the webbing can collapse.

I have a 99 taco I bought from family with manual transmission and hubs and less than 150k on the odo. Realizing I am sitting in a damn unicorn. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one!

I think he works so well cuz he works alone. Sometimes times working alone is key to being able to accomplish so much. U knw without the distractions of people going in and out, or people talking to you. It's super therapeutic.

a "rebooted" OEM toyota axle is still 1000X better than a "new" Napa one. Don't buy aftermarket

When you're doing a swap like this, a donor vehicle is the way to go. Sometimes some necessary parts like brackets you can't even get from the dealer and most wreckers destroy small parts.

This is one rare '96. If the VIN and frame are still okay, I'd rebuild this truck, not wasting a dime on that green Tacoma. Just my humble opinion.

Every 96 Tacoma in Kentucky has already been recycled into a 2008 Tacoma, and a 2019 Tacoma.... Can’t get over how little rust is on that truck.

Before you sell the rear axle/diff. you might want to check the front diff is the same ratio as the diff on the project truck

bro you can do it simple just change the cabine and the bed than you have a 4wd 4doors we did the same thing we have put a 2004 Toyota hilux cabine on a 1997 solid axle model chassis everything is the same you don't have to cut and any welding

if your gonna use cinder blocks you should NEVER stack them that way always stack them right side up with a 16" 2x4 or 2x6 to span the whole top of the block, super dangerous the way you've got them, they can suddenly break and collapse that way , just sayin, like the rest of your vids, I have an "03" V6 5spd 4x4 excab with 335000 mi on original equipment still runs like top

FYI, converting to manual hubs on the 1st gen Tacoma is easy. You just need IFS hubs from an 1986-1995 truck or 4Runner (or Tacoma) and they simply install in place. 4WD Toyota Owner magazine did a write up on this a couple of yrs ago and I was surprised how simple it was.

Just curious, if you're going to all the trouble to do a swap, why not go with a solid front axle with locking hubs? Seems like it might be less work for a stronger setup in the long run. Nice work btw!

But our the most popular and favorite one is Toyota Hilux double cabin and Land Cruiser n there are ton of these here on road.. Cars are a bit expensive here.. New Hilux is for 80k$, Forunner(Aka Surf here) 100k$ and Land Cruiser, 200 series, the most prestigious car in Pakistan is upto to 200k$.. I wish I culd buy ny1 of these evn if it's an old model 🙁.. I miss my hilux, miss it bcoz I lost my job to covid.. I feel sad..

Hi Austin, my name is George, I'm mexican, you have a friend in Mexico whenever you come, I live in a border state with Texas and I enjoy all your videos, you always have me absorbed and entertained in what you do, maybe is because I have a Tacoma too and I want to do the same you are doing to yours. Mine is a 99 Tacoma, 4 cilinders, SR5, 4WD with automatic transmission and the locking hubs in very good shape with the original green color somewhat burnt, only the diferential blocker is missing (that´s because its not TRD) I bought the truck in $5000 dlls a year ago, it already came with new BF Goodrich All-terrain tires and I´ve just took it to the workshop to raised it 2 more inches and fixed few mechanichal details it had. Imagine everything I want to improve, a bumper and lights like your trucks, a LED light bar, I´m not sure if installing rolling bars or a cabin cover, that's because I need to use the truck to carry it too and I think if I install just a cabin cover will give more espace but I accept suggestions. My friends tell me to paint it in black so that it looks imposing, I will only leave the bumpers and bars in black but I want to paint the body in Jasper green metallic, I like more the idea of a more friendly and relaxed color, maybe with a tribal sea turtle tattoo in one side, to climb on my kayak or my camping equipment and escape to the lake or the beach, If I lived near you I would definitely take it to you to do the improvements. The truck Is a gem, every week someone enter my business to look for the owner asking if I sell it just like this without being fixed, but there´s something I want to ask you, since I bought it the only thing I noticed, I feel that the engine does not develop so smoothly, its slow, as it lacks power on pavements streets with very steep slopes, but in flat streets and rough terrain slopes works amazing, I never had a Tacoma, its my first truck, so I dont Know if that specific truck is like that, or if is because is 4 cilinder, or what could it be?? So, others questions I have if you could be so kind to answer me, are these: I know how the differential blocker works, but not the locking hubs, could you explain me the difference? Can a differential blocker could be installed even with the locking hubs without one affecting the other? Can the engine be changed by the V6 3400 without problems, so still works fine or even better??

I enjoyed the video, but please be careful storing the spare truck on CMU blocks. CMU blocks will crumble and fail without warning.

My son drives a 99 extended cab 4x4 , 3.4, 5 speed manual trans, manual locking hubs. I’ve always told him it’s a unicorn Tacoma. Can’t wait to see the process of changing the front wheel bearings since his might need them soon.

stick with the add system if truck will go wheeling. the manual hub setup has weaker cv axles and the hubs are a failure point themselves. the add system really isnt that unreliable

Reboot the OEM axles. Its cheap and easy to do with a reboot kit from Toyota 04438-35062. Those aftermarket axles are not as good.

safety advice on those cinderblocks. The way you have them positioned is stressing their weakest dimension. Also wood between the blocks and surface on soft ground and wood between block and frame. Great build, always wanted to do this on a quad cab + tdi ;)

The strength of a concrete block is in the vertical position dude... Just saying...

Original Toyota front axles will last the life of the vehicle if they are taken care of, change boots when or before they split. Any after market axe will last a fraction of the miles. The originals are a much harder steel. I have seen 4runners with over 600,000 miles with original axels

You don't think Toyota axles are stronger than Napa? I was going to go with aftermarket axles when my boots tore but I wanted to keep my OEM ones as I read a lot that the Napas didn't last long. I ended up rebuilding and booting mine. I wheel a lot tho.

1996 was a great year for the Tacoma. First year of the 5VZ-FE and it retained some of the body characteristics of the earlier model

Austin, I have noticed over numerous episodes you are relatively safety conscious. I implore you to keep it up, always! My best friend this past year was helping his brother work on a truck. The truck slipped off of the blocks and the training landed directly on his chest and abdomen! It is a miracle he survived, but, it broke and separated his sternum, as well as broke every single rib on both sides in two or more places each!!! Months in the hospital (alone - COVID), months in rehab, he is mostly recovered, but his lung capacity will never recover and remains at around sixty percent (60%) of what it was! PLEASE BE SAFE!!! No truck is worth your life or health. Peace!! Love the channel!

It's been my experience that mechanical is Always better and more reliable. As for the rest of the truck there's a lot of $$ in the small parts, good thinking you know what you're doing 👍👍 BTY I would save the lower control arm's incase there different than the prerunner and now would be a good time to put lockers in hint hint.
