As others have said spin the wheel hold the spring and vibrations should be present if the wheel bearing has failed. Pretty simple job to do, done it recently on my 420D.

Best way iv found while in the trad if you feel play spin the wheel as fast as you can if you hear a grind noice grab the spring and see if you can feel a vibration while the wheel is spinning nice top tip for you 🤙🏻

That’s more than likely steering rack bush, super common on them all and easy fix too, bmw do a genuine repair kit with a revised bush, just done mine

Spin the wheel and straight after feel the coil spring above, if you can feel a bad vibration on one side compared to the other then you know the bearing has gone 👍🏻

As others have said, spin the wheel and hold the spring at same time. If its the wheel bearing youll feel a vibration through the spring

To check the wheel bearing spin the wheel when off the floor with some speed and hold the spring if you feel roughness it’s more than likely the wheel bearing. BMW are also common for the bush in the steering rack which cause slight side to side play on the OSF. If you do the wheel bearing I can get you the torque settings for the bolts if needed

Generally if its a wheel bearing it will hum and the hum usually gets louder when you steer into bends but will hum all the time just gets louder when steering also grab the wheel at 12oclock and six oclock position and give it a good wobble

To test wheel bearings for what you were doing side to side but up and down instead. Should have no play

To check the wheel bearing you have to check for play by moving the wheel from left to right like you do but also from top to bottom. 👍

Place your hands top and botttom sort of like 12 and 6 o’clock position and check for play, then spin the wheel with one hand and with the other hand hold onto a suspension component such as; coil spring, shocker…

To know for sure if its the wheel bearing, rock the wheel at the bottom and the top as well. If it only does it on the left to right motion it can be the outer tie rod. Also if it does move on the top and bottom movement check the ball joint of the control arm too, but if the wheel is groaning it most likely is the bearing!
