Filmed With: -GoPro: amzn.to/3mhJQ71 -DJI Mavic Air 2: amzn.to/3mkby2X Time to start the GX470 project. With 205k on the clock, this car is probably going to break down a lot. Subscribe to keep sending it.
Fj transfer case will bolt right into your gx which will make it a selectable 4 wheel drive not all wheel drive. Gives you better gas mileage and you can find a used unit for under $500.
@poggers beans the 460 and Tacoma in that year both came with the A750 automatic transmission depending on what options your vehicle has. I would guess the fj t case would fit but I’m not sure.
I have an 04 with 430k kilometers. Drives great except I had to change struts coz the air suspension went on me. I regretted not getting another air suspension. It's super soft. I have issue with cracked dash, DVD player won't work, speakers rough and the cluster needs fixing. Speedometer won't work, only sometimes. I have the same colour and interior but needs a driver side seat leather replacement. Let me know if you see a driver side seat. Looking fwd for your videos
The GX470 was a low stressed extremely reliable vehicle. Easy one million mile SUVs which are very off road capable. You can also add a modern Android head unit for all the bells and whistles.
I feel like the "one million miles" thing is thrown around a bit too liberally. How many million mile GXs have you seen? How many with "only" 700K? How many with "just" 500k?
@@larrylampshade1734 Its a 4th gen 4runner underneath, and the 2UZ-FE is more than million mile capable. There's quite a few Tundra's with the same drivetrain as the GX with over a million miles, and seen plenty over a half million on the original drivetrain.
@@larrylampshade1734 There are quite a few million mile Toyotas and Lexus vehicles which are taken care of.. The thing is not a lot of people take care of their cars and the body starts breaking down, but the engine still goes strong. These cars have great bullet-proof engines but not the bodies around it.
I have an 04. Have owned it now for 5 plus years and absolutely love it. I did the standard build, 2" lift, tires, rack etc. I've had it in all kinds of terrain and have never doubted it's capabilities once. Thus I see no need for a rear diff lock. Just do the routine maintenance run high test fuel and this truck will treat you well. Glad you have one now. I really enjoyed your FJ videos.
Please keep the Lexus Gx vids coming! They're becoming super popular. I have 2 Gx460s, a 2010 and a 2012. They're great trucks for a daily and super capable even in stock form on the trails. Would love to see a ton of content on the Gx470! Congrats
I have an 02 Sequoia with 211k and running strong. Family car. The GX470 is my next pavement princess. Interesting how the Lexus is cheaper than the 4Runner/Sequoia of the same caliber and year model. I'll get a CJ7 for off-roading. Thanks for the video!
Great intro Z! My mostly stock 2003 GX470 has 260k miles. I’m the second owner after purchasing from Lexus dealer CPO coming off a lease with about 35k on the Odom. In my 13years of ownership I have never had any problems. One thing I wanted to add to your excellent commentary: the car has outstanding view for the driver with its big windows all around; stable and maneuvers on the freeway is excellent for an SUV. I’ve avoided a few spin outs in front of me.
I just bought a 04 GX that’s the same style as yours with nav. Subscribed to see your progress in the future. That jump with stock side steps was epic.
We have 175K on our 2005 GX470 (purchased new). It hasn't been trouble-free, but it is our all-time favorite vehicle for road trips and comfort is outstanding for 16-hour days. It's also a great vehicle for towing. We didn't get it for off-road use, but it has been great for Michigan winters and winter road trips to Colorado. Thanks for talking about your experience with your GX.
I replaced my nav. with a phoenix audio 10in touchscreen. 800.00 30min to install and I Love it. So much of an improvement. I bought a 2004 with 145,000 mi for 7k in May.
I would just take the rear seats out. Same with spare tire and running boards and maybe rear mud guards. Rear suspension is easy as hell but watch out for the ripped bump stops
Can you clarify the one touch start. I can’t hear your engine at all?! Is that just with yours? Or am I just confused 🤷♀️ I have to turn key all the way to start not click, click..
I have a 100 series land cruiser with the built in NAV from toyota, can you post a video or reply to how the apple car play update worked out and what equipment you used for it. I am interested in updating mine. thanks!
@ZentRose can you update us on if you upgraded the head unit or if you installed Apple CarPlay and how it is and walk us through it, I’m getting a GX470 but want to know these details before.
The drive train is actually the same except the tcase the transmission is a A750E wich is popular and interchangeable you can swap a transmission from a 5th gen Toyota 4runner its exactly the same bell house on both sides same with the engine 4.7 of course, and differentials same don't get spooked on parts these are made in Japan its a small island trust me Toyota allmost allways uses parts they allready have
Does your car still have the stock engine? I still have the same model 2006 but only have 98k miles on it and was serviced by the dealer. Mark Levinson speakers on the front side doors are blown so I look forward to how you replaced them.
You live in orange county right? i delivered uber eats at your apartment complex a few months ago and saw your GX and also saw another one of your neighbors has one too with a similarly built up setup
You should look into the Phoenix automotive tesla style screen. I just upgraded my gx470 with that radio and I love it, I also have the navigation model too by the way and the climate controls work with this new screen.
So, I'm also looking at the 3rd gen Montero Limited. The ABS goes out on those, but you can take out the fuse and be fine. Would that be the case on the GX as well?
Do you prefer one over the other? I test drove both but my 6’2” frame didn’t fit in the 4Runner without my head hitting the ceiling 😆 I ended up in a GX470 and am so stoked I did! It’s one of my favorite vehicles I’ve ever driven or owned.
@@marcusyoung4245 That might be the toughest question I’ve ever been asked haha. I like the 4Runner because it’s a little smaller and has a slightly higher towing capacity. I like the GX because it rides smoother, is more comfortable and luxurious. Although I do like the simplicity of the 4Runner. If I had to pick one I’d get both.
yep did the same, $9200 because it needed $2000 in maintenence, if you have time buy a project, but if you have more money than time, losing pay while going to service shops is costly. pay now or pay later.
I got skar 8 ohm 6.5" speakers for the door and the mettra plug and play adpaters. It was just the front lower door speakers and the subwoofer that were blown in this car. I'll post a video soon
The timing belt and water pump has already been done.....I should hope so. It should be on it's second round. My 99 LX470 (same engine) has 293K and it's on it's 3rd timing belt maintenance. It's never broken down. The only reason it would keep breaking is if you keep jumping it like that LOL. It's not a short course truck or a Raptor.
I picked up an 08 GX470 this year after looking at a half dozen over 3 or 4 months. Went out of state and got a much nicer GX with 140,000 on it for about 9 grand. Did the Timing kit with water pump. 3 peak tires all around with fresh brakes. I find myself driving this GX most of the time now. My wheels are ate up . so thinking stimulus money will go into some Vision 398 off road wheels. When bags fail I plan on an Old Man Emu 2" kit. It will see more beaches than rock or mud trails.
I bought GX 470 2005 for $ 30,000 back in Russia, has been using it for 8 years, so you guys lucky u can get it much cheaper P.S. I’ve been offered $ 15,000 if I sell it now, but I’m not even considering it
Service records, they say timing belt needs to be done every 90,000 or so but I bought one which I’ve been driven over 150,000 miles and when it was replaced they said it barely even needed to be replaced. Still looked good. These things are in place. But make sure that all oil changes are done on time, and any service records. Other than that, I rarely see anything that needs constant replacing.
I have a 1997 80 series and a 2006 GX, and they are very similar in many ways. Curb weight is almost identical, wheelbase is only 2" different (GX is longer), third row seats work exactly the same, and much more. I was shocked at how similar they were in overall layout when I got the GX. The GX seems very much like an updated and improved 80 series. However, the 80 series wins with the front axle instead of independent fronts (in my opinion). You got a decent price on that truck.
Im subrcribed to i think 3 people that first 30 seconds of this video and how casual it was got you that well deserved subscribe definitely my style lmfao
My GX has 311,000 miles on her and counting. I can't sell her 🤣 because I daily my FJ cruiser, but I can't bring myself to sell the gx because I love it so much. Still no cracks, air bag delete in favor of bilstein suspension. Still not a si gle tear or stain In the Interior. She's my baby
I almost bought that exact car off of craigs list. Is that the one that had the odometer replaced and the mileage was off? There were a couple of odd things about it that turned me off. I love me 2004 GX470 though. And of course I loved the dog shot.
From what I've heard, there are kits available that allow you to upgrade the Navigation screen even though the climate control fan speed buttons are embedded in the screen. Am I wrong about that?
The only thing that has kept me from buying one of these in the past is they require premium fuel, which now in 2024 in some places costs a full $1/gallon more than regular unleaded. I bought an '08 Volvo XC90 AWD V8 instead which only "recommends" premium but doesn't require it. I add a bottle of Lucas fuel treatment about ever 3 or 4 tanks of gas and it runs great, in addition to getting decent mileage @ ~17mpg city/23mpg highway. Inside it compares well in terms of capacity & leg room as well. I'd definitely look at the GX470 much harder if not for the fuel requirement.
