I BOUGHT A CHEAP HYUNDAI i20 

Hi Lee, excellent video as usual. What you are describing is exactly the symptoms my wife's i20 had at 2 year old. Main dealer accepted the rusting tailgate, their body shop told us they had done loads of them, claimed the rear glass was installed too low in the tailgate and the water couldn't drain away properly. They sorted that for us under warranty, but we had lost faith in the car it had also become throaty and gutless, and they suspected the timing chain had become stretched. Part exchanged it for a 50 mile pre-reg Adam. Still have the Adam 6 years later, been a great car.

A friend of mine has two of these as company cars.Both of them have more than 270.000km on the clock and they work flawlessly. To me, Hyundai cars are excellent when it comes to reliability and cheap maintenance. Customer satisfaction surveys prove just that, every single year.

Even with the high mileage that car will sell no problems, they are really good reliable motors plus you have done the major repair jobs on it , thanks for another great video Lee 👍

128.000 Miles considering the lockdown period for a 2014 car with just a 1.2 litre engine is a lot, They wore the clutch right out, They must have driven everywhere they could including to the toilet

a treasure trove of really good info again Lee. anyone skipping through your posts will miss so much that could benefit them. seen plenty of that generation little Hyundai with the tailgate paint problem, some with holes in. BLMC cars built in the 70s suffered from exactly the same issue but were easier to fix thanks to the old school windscreen rubbers. something that hasn't changed since I left the trade in the 80s is how the value of a car completely collapses when it has one serious fault; a profit opportunity for those brave enough and in the know. the scan tool looks worth looking into a bit deeper too.

I like i20's - not the most glamorous car but well engineered/everything fits/lots of features. Unlike some manufacturers they paint the engine compartment in body colour rather than leaving it in base primer. IIRC this version was built in India - we've got the next model which was built in Turkey - also in white and signs of rust around the top brake light - suspect problems in the dip prime process prior to paint. Yours seems to have had a hard life given all the external scuffs. Might be worth fitting a better steering wheel but depends on cost.

Really interesting video Lee. My guess is it is an ex food delivery car of some sort with the roof damage, wear, mileage and mech problems. Seems like a car that has done lots of inner city miles... Good pick up once it's tidied up!

I,ve brought a couple of i20s out of the salvage yard in the past.Great reliable cars always easy to sell and get loads of interest in them.

Check the air con works! I have a 14 i10 [only 31000miles] but just needed a new condenser/pipework and a re gas! Also it's the expensive gas!

Tailgate rust was quite common and Hyundai did get pay out to repair these in warranty (there was a mod kit available to prevent it once fixed).

I robbed one A4C. Typical rusty boot. Popular even at 100-115k miles. Mine had engine fault couldn’t be diagnosed. Likely blocked cat. Traded it back of cost. Had it stuck engine bits 2 years. People like the i20. I10. Likewise. The i10 is so bad to look at doesn’t stop low cost chariot selling.

Great to see the life of a car trader and the way you present Lee. You reckon something been dropped on roof and run down to bottom of glass? Reminds me of old days and rust was common on cars after a few years, and vans, I had fords mainly throughout me working life.

I have the topdon its mint, you should have mentioned that it connects to your phones wifi...when you find a fault it does a google search for the most relevant google comments...brilliant

yep the tailgate rots on these things - my sister in law had a silver 2009 one. That went so she had it repaired and resprayed (cost a bomb as you can imagine ) about three years later the eldest son passed his test and was due to inherit the thing but the tailgate was shocking - I told the brother in law to source an in colour one on line which they managed and got it replaced. Last March just gone the lad blew the engine up as he never kept an eye on the oil level - scrapped and yep you guessed the tailgate was a mess - again

Morning Lee, my wife had a 17 plate white Hyundai. The paint was very thin almost patchy in places. Scratched very easily, appeared to have no base coat. Sold it due to constantly touching it in. Good reliable cars with ply of spec . Body work dubious. Would not buy another

Surprised to see corrosion on a 14 reg. my 14 plate swift hasn't a spot of rust anywhere and I would be well peeved if it had thought hyundai were better cars than that.

Got one of these in black, same issue with the paint on the tailgate, paint was peeling off the bumper as well, very sluggish, had literally no power, turn out to be a stretched timing chain, we replaced that and drove perfect afterwards, not bad cars at all once few bits sorted, parts quite cheap as well

I noticed years ago that white cars rusted more than any colour. I had a 8 year old polo that was as rotten as a pear. Can you do a fancy wrap on roof? Top don seem to give things to most RU-vid channels (chops garage, home built, resurewreck etc) and they seem to be doing well with them

Mine eml on too, bogged down. Ok first 1.5 miles then hard to drive. Wasn’t chain or timing. Couldn’t be diagnosed. Poss blocked cat. Was my last i20

Interesting people thinking it's high mileage. Using an average of 12-15,000 milea a year, it's pretty much spot on for a 9 year old car.

Yeah paint on white Hyundais isn't the best . I had a 107 and they suggested replacing the chain at 120000. So due on this one and hopefully will solve the issues 😊

blue one across the road to me its 5 years newer than mine its far worse than mine it light pale blue. mine gone in few spots but use rust stuff on it and looks to stopped it for now but as im planning upgrading to new gen of i20 and just put new clutch in it a next owner job but nothing compared to some ive seen my cars pretty good, should been a recall

To be fair, a cheap hyundai with 123,000 miles will have issues,so I hope the timing chain issue solves the iffy running.with a brand new clutch and chain, should be good for a good few years.

I don't really rate these when they reach anything over 80k miles Stretched timing chains, inactive variator pulleys and knackered or blocked catalysts are all common ailments I've come across. Should be a sorted car though once you've gone through it - you've paid the right money for it - and should get a tidy profit out of it. 👍👍

first gen and this 2nd gen face lift its a design fault in my eyes they love to rust bottom of rear window. the should scrapped the face lift and fixed and done rear lift it should of been a recall its a place water can sit and lot dirt and stray get on back these cars. should been a recall but first gen in the book think it said 12 years paint warranty so if you have one within it get Hyundai to fix it and re paint it. design fault should be a recall as so many start to rust bad there and go to coast some are shocking. still not put me off looking at the 2015 shape same engine, i know the flaws and what to look out for and not a great deal to change the chain and tension as they can fail too before the chain, parts are reasonable cost but key thing fix it before they known to go bad and save the engine as they can go well those engines and ive heard the 1.2 and 1.4 is the same engine just bored out to 1.4 don't know how much truth in that but on the autobahn only few km/h faster top end and slightly faster to gain speed but a lot more tax so 1.2 for me engine a good one if you maintain it well and replace the parts before they go you be good, the extra £100 plus a year tax not worth the gains you get in the 1.4 but that my thought on it

So the roof peel just primer and paint white can of gloss , remotely. Where no fleebay tailgate just paint too. . Doesn’t matter. In da slightest
