You're looking at it the wrong way round Matt. For less than £5000, you now have a gorgeous X-Type in a lovely colour combo, with fully sorted mechanicals. You also have full jaguar service history, and a modern classic that will climb in value over time. It's a bit like a fine wine. You might have to lay it down for a while, but it will travel really nicely. It was a good decision in my book. Well worth saving.

Matt never lose your enthusiasm & happiness about a car no matter how old, you are luckier than most that you are exposed to beautiful and not so beautiful cars, due to your work, enjoy what comes your way and if you have to spend think how much you are making a great car for the next owner. This is one of my favourite 'I have massively overspent' side look to camera vids. A masterpiece of a car. You could park this in the national gallery and it wouldn't look out place. They say head over heart but sometimes. just sometimes, a heart over head is what makes us who we are. And that is why I love this channel.

Unpopular opinion (probably), but I think the X-Type is better looking than the S-Type, with its large oval shaped grille that looks out of place on that front end. I get that Jaguar was trying to modernise their old-school design, or keep up with the retro trend of the late 90's and early 2000's, but they messed it up on the S-Type.

@cosmic-tiger

Totally agree. The x type looks like a modern classic that’s aged really well. The S type is a car that looks like it’s been designed by committee, half of whom are stuck in the past (the grille) & the other half that wanted to compete with the German executive cars of the day. Some heritage grilles transitioned well like BMW’s & Alfa Romeo’s, Jag’s really didn’t.

I owned three X Types all bought new over an eight year period of my life. Lovely cars with a classy interior especially the SE and Sovereign models. Unfortunately this model was incredibly rust prone particularly in the sills and because of the plastic sill covers very poor examples can still look cosmetically good. Numbers on the road are rapidly diminishing as they fail their MOT over structural issues. Glad you saved it, another owner would have run it into the ground and then scrapped it which would have been a travesty.

Hi Matt, I had the first sovereign estate delivered out Jaguar Cardiff in 2004, I’ve always regretted selling it, very similar to this except the exterior was Silver, but the interior was identical, I went a bit mad on the spec and added nearly £12k’s worth of extras, I know people knock them but I did 65k in it in 20 months and it never let me down and I always felt special every time I drove it, since then, I’ve had XF’s and an F-Type, but I have a real soft spot for it as it was my first Jag. If I had the space I would bite your hand off, but I’m looking for a CLK convertible, another car we wish we didn’t sell. You have done an amazing job, someone will snap it up I’m sure. It’s definitely a car worth saving.. thank you, as you created one of nicest x-types still on the road. Let me know if come across a CLK though … lol

Back in 2001 when these first came out I decided it was the car for me. I test drove a 2.5v6 manual but it had horrific driveline shunt due to the 4wd and manual box. A few months later I bought a 4 month old ex demo 2.1 V6 auto. It was ok but went wrong so many times I traded it for a new Passat after 3 weeks. It’s put me off Jaguar for life! Although I still want a Jaaaag…..

My first Jag was a 2004 3 litre V6 AWD manual X-Type saloon. Loved that car but the DMF disintegrated one day. Replaced under warranty, thankfully. After that I had it for a couple of years hassle free driving. I traded it in at 90k miles against a Jaguar S-Type, which was a definite step up in luxury. Don't be put off by a poor experience with an older Jaguar at the bottom budget. I am currently on Jaguar number 6 (a 2016 XF S V6 Supercharged in BRG) and loving it.

I owned the same spec estate but made a mistake with the engine size. It was the 2.5 which drank the same as the 3.0 but was down on tourqe and it always felt lacking in power. It rattled and creaked from day one and i spent many days curing them. The later facelifted samples were far better, but petrol versions are almost impossible to find. The X-Type was criticised for offering a taste of Jaguar but was spoiled by too many ford parts, this i think was cruel but fairly accurate. I sold mine at a massive loss, the lemon car stigma had hit values hard and no one wanted them. Good luck with selling this one.

Well done Matt for updating a great and rare car, brilliant job. Still belly laughing at 'eau-d-hound' as we're nearly in the silly season, you should market the said fragrance, call it 'woof',and make a killing!!. So good that you have the patience to stay the course with this and well done to your mechanic et al for their good work too. Loved the Saab you saved too, smashing car, cheers, Pete.

Great vid. Like your passion for it, and the sport ones don't look bad. But surely this is the motoring equivalent of a pair of elasticated brown cords. Possibly a crotchless pair as it has that V6 but still a pair of cords.

For that price it,s more than a belter!,where do you find these?!!! Always great to see a sheaf of history & paperwork;it,s amazing how many cars are offered with quoted full history without supporting evidence!

Matt I used to own a Jaguar x type estate, 2.2d sport premium at the age of 22. Bloody loved it but it eventually weighed more in rust than actual jag. Keep up the good work

Great video thanks Matt! Nearly bought an x type but they just aren’t quite big enough for car seats in the back. That was many years ago!

Have to say that would be my 'Holy grail' of X-Types Matt! 👍👍I had a 04 3.0 AWD saloon for a while and loved it, so much more than a Mondeo in a posh frock!...(you can tell by the comments who's never owned one!)....But as soon as you started looking around I found myself shouting 'Get underneath Matt check the cills!'....Oh well some you win, I looked at an Estate not long back, in Didsbury until I put my finger into some gigantic rust hole!... A lovely car to save so well done, just hope you haven't added another 'ornament' to your forecourt!

I am a Jaguar XJ man ( on my 5th) but I have a secret admiration for the x-type estate. I just think it looks good. My Jaguar Specialist has provided me with various loan cars over the years of all Jaguar types. Driven several x-types, both diesel & petrol. I quite like the 2.2 diesel engined versions. Yesterday had my 2002 X308 4 Litre LWB Sovereign in for an oil change and f/r brake pads. Loaned a 2006 X-type 2.5 litre petrol estate. Not bad. Observations-crisp throttle, changes through autobox constantly at urban speeds. Narrow front seats. Timber trim looks plastic. Very stable cornering (car on Bridgestones plus 4 wheel drive). Similar performance to MG ZT 190s that I had some years ago. Engine bay seems tight compared to XJ. After 70 miles in x-type yesterday I was not particularly relaxed. Petrol consumption a bit juicy for a 2.5 litre! Have seen underside of many x-types on a 4-post lift in Jaguar Specialist workshop and in common with many s-type cars they often have horrendous rust! I'll stick with my 2002 XJ as long as possible. The X308 is the last of the sleek low Jaguar saloons. From 2002 to 2009 the XJ was "jacked-up" and became more complex. A friend has a 2006 Daimler Super V8 which is a rare car. Endless suspension and electrical issues. Then replaced by the XJ "hatchback" which is technically brilliant but does not look like a Jaguar. The Jaguar Specialist had an XJL autobiography model in yesterday and a very frustrated mechanic undertaking a "string of jobs" and a big bill for the customer! If I did choose an X-type Sovereign estate then it would be a 2.2 diesel (economy) or the 3 litre. If you are purchasing take a good look underneath the vehicle!!
