Not good enough, I need to see it burn too, and then torch the shop he bought it from, and then humbly apologise to all of humanity on Oprah, and then donate 10% to a cerebral palsy charity, and then buy me a kitten so I can heal the mental trauma. Oh and I want my lawn cut too.

I work at a municipality and the equipment is usually held onto until it’s garbage. I guess it depends on the municipality but if it’s a small low budget town it’s going to be used beyond its prime

I bought a 580k case 4x4 backhoe off Ebay from a individual who claimed it was fully functioning. The first red flag was when I turned down the road to pick up the machine and saw the equipment dealership on the corner and new it wasn't from a individual. I made him demonstrate the machine and it did run and apear fine until I got it home and found it got stuck and had not torque to move itself . So basically the shuttle transmission discs are worn out and they need a rebuild. You try to give people the benefit of a doubt and be honest but they just go around screwing everyone and in the long run it comes back around to them anyway.

i just purchased a massey-ferguson sub-compact tractor with a loader and 60" cutting deck with 1700 hours on it for $5500. i'm flipping houses and needed a small machine for light earth moving and landscaping. i was not too concerned about the hours on this machine because i bought it from the original owner who had done regular maintenance and had all the records. other than a few scratches and dents, the machine runs very well. i would never have purchased a machine like this with this many hours off of a rental company or other "commercial" "multi-operator" source. i worked at Home Depot part-time once for almost 8 years and was often helping out in the tool/equipment rental department. some of the stories of what people tried to do with their equipment were a range of stupid to sad to humorous. basically, when one of the machines went off the lot on the back of a 1 ton dump with some local contractor/landscaper, we never knew whether it would come back in pieces. one "indian" guy who had NO business renting ANY piece of equipment ran one of the small kubota backhoes over a hill and was lucky he wasn't killed. it had to be retrieved with a wrecker. buying former commercial equipment is a real "roll of the dice." if you could start it and run it around and try as many things on the drive train and hydraulics as possible, you could probably get an idea of how beat it was. but if you can't start it and drive it, you're taking a BIG risk!

I disagree with this video. My issue is government owned or large corporation equipment can be lacking in service or maintenance also. Large part of the problem is these pieces of equipment can have so many different operators that from one to the next everyday maintenance can be lacking. Some guys care, will check fluids, grease, do a once over daily, run it right. Others, hop in, turn the key, and run the piss out of it. So, point is, auctions are a gamble regardless. You sometimes don't know what you'll get. Buyer beware always at auctions.

Mission Dan I agree. That's exactly what I mean. He's giving people bad advice on buying used equipment. You can't say "Well, if a municipality owned it or a big corporation, you can feel safe you're getting a good machine." ALL used equipment is a risk.

Love my 310e, got one at auction from Citizens gas. Hasn’t burned a drop of oil in three years and was well taken care of, southern so no rust. The thing is built so solid, only wish it was the 4x4 during this rainy spring. Also got an international 4900 dump that was a supervisors for a municipality. Our initial and over all maintenance cost is lower on the fleet types over private sellers. Once in a while you see one they just ran the snot out off knowing they were going to sell it, so it’s wise to investigate best you can during the prebid period. Those fees can make or break a good deal for sure.

Working for a state agency I’d beg to differ on that being the number one. We run everything we have into the ground. And if they are from a cold weather state you will Probably have more salt damage than anything. Our loaders are More like pasta strainers when we sell it. And unlike many large rental Companies or fleet owned, they clean their equipment, we never do. State owned just a hair above private owned in my opinion.

I picked up an old Kenworth logging truck last fall at an RB sale up here in Canada. It was a project truck for my dad to drive. It’s had some little problems along the way but it’s been a great truck. Hauls load for load beside my new ones. Sometimes you get lucky. I bought an old pickup at another sale in November. It was junk. Sold it to a guy for parts. Sometimes you get burned. Lol

Bought a 710d JD 4x4 monster backhoe on a online auction, during the great crash. Granite construction was selling off a ton of stuff. Get this for $13,000, used it for 10 years and sold it for $23,000! just did fluids and tires, great machine but too damn heavy, always sinking in wet dirt to the axles. Outriggers too short and machine could roll over in a big swing. One great thing is the company provided the maintenance records, and they had spent over $30,000 on repairs - tranny, axles, etc. they beat it up, but they fixed it too.

i have both sold and bought a lot of equipment at auctions. i love buying at them and hate selling at them, i always seem to lose money when i sale hat auctions, and thats why i always try to sell it to a privet person. on the buy side if you know what to look for and stick to a budget you can buy equipment for 50 cents on the dollar, the best i ever did buying i bought a dozer that was worth 150k for 34k, and still to this day i can not belive i got that good of deal. The best advice i can give is don't get auction fever witch is when you pay more than the equipment is worth or paid more than it was when new.

I have to agree with Rick Booker. Great info but ditch the chest cam. The extra fees are called a buyers premium or a sellers premium. Often they are 10 % of the winning bid. Sometimes items have both so you will pay 20% more than your winning bid.

Auctions are a love hate relationship but as a rule i bid to buy and repair i dont trust any listing or any clames as in good working order. In my experience most things go to the auction because there beyond economic repair. Ive never been lucky to get good masheens without expencive repairs or fixes first. The last item a skidsteer needs a new hydraulic pump as the casing has broke on the main bolt on castings . Its a crab shoot .

Municipal equipment from our city can be hit and miss. My uncle bought a 1992 Ford F-150 4x4 from the city auction. Had nothing but problem after problem out of it. Before he bought it, it was the fire stations rescue truck they drive them like they’re going to a fire all the time. His next auction buy was a 1988 Ford F800 diesel chip truck it ran great no issues out of it. I was thinking about bidding on a Komatsu backhoe but it went to the big city crew building where they never maintain their equipment. The former operator told me he kept it up before it depreciated out to anther crew. Now it’s utter garbage. The former operator told me to pass on it at the auction due to lack of maintenance.

I bought a state owned John Deere Backhoe 410E just like yours with low hours and it’s been a great machine the only thing I’ve had to do to it other than normal maintenance is replace some seals here and there because of wear and rear. And that’s how I got my start👍🏼

We bought 1 piece of equipment at an auction, I have a video of me starting it on my channel. It was a (then) 75 year old Farmall M (this was 2015, it turns 80 next year), it was the second tractor on the block, we hadn't even paid any attention to it beforehand. Anyway my Mom looses her sense and buys it for somewhere just above a 10th of the price you paid for the 310. It ran fine (no idea the hours, and it had had an overhaul in the 90s... We think) but the radiator leaked (40 year old rubber hoses, what can ya do), which we fixed with some copper sealer. Smokes a little at start and when you gas it, but it ran fine, and still does. Only problems (typical old tractor stuff), back light bulb burnt out, leaky radiator, the last idiot of an individual *really* cranked down on the drain plug, we had some fun with that when we changed the oil. Rear axle needs new seals (it leaks oil), seat is a little wore out, and the back tires were complete junk. They didn't match and one was a retread with a split clear down to the steel bands, probably 50 year old tires. Anyway, the original owner bought it new and it was the main tractor on the family farm for something like 40 years, when it was parked. It was also a steel wheel tractor that had John Deere rims welded on the back, it was also crashed into a ditch at some point and the front end was replaced with an aftermarket Shwartz wide front. Next guy bought it, did half of a restoration and said "the hell with it" and tried to sell it at a Mecum auction. It didn't go, so Mecum bought it, used it as a farm tractor for a year, tried again in Nashville and we bought it. Still runs like new. It's name is Bob.

I've purchased equipment from Government Liquidation that had the contract to dispose of surplus equipment for the Federal Government. Unless you can physically view the equipment, chances are that there will be items missing that aren't shown in the photos and the service records aren't available. Surplus equipment gets used as a donor, so if they still have that same model in their fleet, they'll steal what they need from the item being surplussed. Larger front end backhoes aren't sought out by a lot of people as they require a large truck and trailer to transport. If the equipment weights more than 20K it probably doesn't have a lot of time on it. The tires will be lacking, so figure $3K for another set. I'd likely purchase from a utility company, as they have certification programs in place limiting the operators, and they do actual service, usually per the manufacturers guidelines. Bonus points given to equipment from a local auction company. If it's wheeled and runs, throw a safety triangle on the back and drive it home. Also a good chance that someone will know the previous owner and give you the thumbs up or thumbs down on purchase.

I go through Ritchie brothers auctions. They mainly do fleet sales which is a plus. They let you run the machines in their yard before auction day. The fees are low (10% max) and you can bid live online. They sell 700+ pieces of equipment in a day so you can usually find something that works for you. The best part is the the bidding theater has comfortable seat to sit in bid while the equipment comes to you.

In general most municipal owned machines are good but be careful there are ones that have been beaten on. I work for a municipality our 310 has 8k hours on it and it's in much better operating shape than the other departments 310, with half the amount of hours on it. Both are up for replacement in the next couple years. You're right on those idle hours, can have a lot of driving hours too, for the most part nothing is put on a trailer.

I'd skip the state/fed stuff if it were me. They will at times treat their equipment like crap, with the employees sometimes having a "drive it like you stole it" mentality. Now, if you can find one that was owned by a SMALLER city, I'd jump on that. They usually still have dedicated mechanics, often extremely rarely used (i.e. had to use it to build one dam, it then sat almost never used for 10 years... or only used during winters for 4-5 times a year to plow snow on city owned lots ), and can be had for cheap (relative to others of course). Again, state or federal, I'd completely avoid - the bigger the government entity you're buying from, the more subject to waste they are, and the more these pieces are treated like throwaways.

3 weeks ago I purchased a 2008 Kubota M4700 with front loader and a 5' Brush Hog at an auction. The auction was in Lake Charles Louisiana, I had a 10% buyers fee and 10% sales tax. I walked out the door paying $10,800. From the engine to the rear diff it's the same grey color, and it's shows it's wear and tear. The orange paint is where it shows its age. The fuel pump is new and the plastics are cracked and missing from the rear tail lights. The fuel light is on but the gauge works. I'm assuming it's because there's an aftermarket electric fuel pump on it. It cranks right up with no problem. The hydraulics are a little slow but I plan on changing out all the fluids and filters soon. I'm hoping it's the filter. Who knows when the last time it was changed. You can tell it's well used cause the bucket condition. It's an open can but I like it. It's my first piece of farm equipment. I mowed for the first time yesterday. It worked like a champ. I'm super excited to use it on my land and can't wait to learn more about this tractor so I can use it properly. I love your videos. Keep posting them.

Good pointers! Now for the 2wd backhoe......mine is a 78 410. When he was hung up extend the backhoe out and the bucket about a foot off the ground and it should lift front end enough to just back out. Ive gotten myself out a few times by doing that.......and i have alot heavier home made pusher on it. It still lifts my front end enough.

I went to auction before to buy a Tractor Loader backhoe couple years ago. Won, it had 300 hours on it, Just as I was finishing up paper work for it, Auction House person came in with a Cop behind him, Saying Sorry but unable to Proceed with Purchase. Turned out that it was Stolen over 9 years ago. (well wouldof been 11 years now). From what i know. Someone Stole it from a Dealership, Used it for awhile then kept it in a barn for Long time before it wound up at the Auction House. So be careful when buying Auction House Items.

I just recently bought a case skid steer off an online auction for $12k and it had very minimal hours. This machine is spotless and had been on a very specific maintenance schedule it’s whole life, meaning that regardless of if it needed maintenance or not, it got a full service. Many municipalities will do this with their equipment to make it last as long as possible. I completely agree with Stan, however, there are exceptions to buying municipal equipment. And you can usually tell if a machine has had a rough life just by looking at it

I'm going to say you're completely wrong. I was a mechanic for a large city and I would never buy from them. About the only thing they do well is fluid changes. They have operators that are extremely hard on things and when a piece of equipment is getting near its service life for them they are only interested in patching things together and making it the next guys problem. Also idle hours on the newer emissions era equipment are death on them.

My wife and I owned a small car dealership for 5 years. We learned a lot of things the hard way going to the auction. We sold cars not equipment but much is the same. You should always do your research before stepping on the block to bid. Set your max price before the sale and stick to it. Never getting in a pissing match with the guy next to you. Know when to walk away. Also watch for someone with the seller running the bids up this happens a lot at the big auctions. Also never be the first to bid many times the auctioneer will lower the starting bidding significantly if nobody bids right away. Last but not least look over everything the best you can. Many larger auctions leave the keys in the vehicles and even provide a test track. You can get great deals at auction but you can also get burned big time. One thing I learned is you can still find great deals on equipment and vehicles through other sources.

Buyer's premium is a joke. I am very hesitant to bid on purple wave or any other company that charges buyer's premium. I think it's a dishonest way to make an extra buck in the fine print. Online sales especially. The company doesn't really have to do that much. If they are charging the seller 5-10% and the buyer 5-10% they are making a butt load. Sales tax is often charged too, so you have to look out for that. Luckily I am mostly buying farm equipment, so I just need to fill out a tax exempt form for whatever state the equipment is coming from. Still a pain in the butt.

I would't buy that black TLB it's from a second one guy operation that does not do more than oil changes on it LOL but seriously I will not go to an auction anymore because of those fees and once you buy it it's yours with out the chance to go thru it plus you forgot to add sales tax on top of the buyers fee , so if you do go you really have to have a number already done on the piece of equipment before you bid to make it a bargin. At least if you buy it used from a dealer at the same price you have a small waranty

I DO agree with you that municipal machines are stringently maintained. However... everybody and their brother have been in and out of them operating them. And a lot of times they a newer operators. That don't know how to care for them. Like we would. They don't own it so they don't care. Rental companies are the BEST for pulling records. (Like a "car fax" for equipment.) But again, everybody and their brother has been in them.... I look at many many things, but my biggest "go/no go" is the cab condition, and the seat. Tells you a lot about how hard it's been used and abused.

I picked up my backhoe loader for $5500 at auction, put another 3-$4000 in it servicing , replacing seals/ some hoses and having a new cylinder rod manufactured. I'm still in it on the right side for what I own that's paid for and I did the work. If i'd of not known what I was buying and paid $10.000 for it plus fixing it in a shop, I'd of been better in some ways to buy a newer machine. I would of had to finance some of it and spend $20.000 plus, and be out looking for extra work with it that I don't need to do now with mine. With the used stuff do research for common problems, hard to find/obsolete parts and the costs to fix it if you can't. sometimes nice looking older used machines make nothing for a reason. Things like a busted front drive hub can cost $5000 plus just for parts if it's not on 3 month back order with the dealers like MF pulled on one of my shop customers. That kinda stuff can be a serious ouch if that machine was picked up for a quick fix up and flip deal, or was to expensive to start with for somebody wanting to use it !

Interesting video! Where’s the best place to find local auctions? Didn’t you say you bought one of your cars at an auction or a salvage?

Hey, you talk like Bernie Sanders - hand language. Seriously now, I have a 690e 1996 JD excavator, 44,000 lbs. Bought from auction as United rentals fleet piece. Batterys were dead and wouldnt crank, rainy day before online bidding, and united rentals offering a 6 month warranty for $$. This was a great buy at that time 20 years ago for $32,000. Then, 3200 hours. Now after 20 years, only did water pump and change oil and parts and do oil scans way ahead of time. Now I have a fuel leak I cant get to, and have to turn off the fuel valve when parked. Runs like a sewing machine. Then a JD 550G dozer I bought maybe 25 years ago, $22,000 at auction sight unseen. I could see it was a private seller, maybe the wife of the dead owner that was selling it because I could see the guy loved his machine - hard surfacing everywhere possible, all filters up to date and marked, etc. I guessed right as after 25 years and now it has 14,000 hours [!] only a water pump and muffler. Lot of love from me that kept it so good. So here, 1 fleet and 1 private and both good buys. Just have to be a detective, and a bit of gambler. Got a 510c JD backhoe off a farm auction. I lost on that one - they beat the crap out of it and now I am trying to get it back in order. But it was just 8,000$ 4x4, extend a hoe. So at least I'll get my $ back

As far as Municipalities equipment goes I had a bad experience with a Box truck I bought ... it looked great but it was anything but ... low miles but they had let it run all day while they were on site engine was completely worn out ... then they had Not done any rust proofing on it (I live in the Rust belt) one day driving it to job site I made a turn and cab mount ripped right off the frame and the cab lifted up on that side and felt like it we were going over ... so long story short Not always a safe to buy Municipal equipment.

Also when painted look for corrosion means was in a corrosive environment I’m not talking normal rust. I’d say it’s a huge risk buying off the internet. I buy houses for a living at auctions and see those in person before auction I wouldn’t buy one over the net . But with houses ya can be sure ya your gonna do paint flooring kitchen baths maybe a roof and windows but that’s not every deal it’s pretty much a given your gonna drop 50k to fix and flip . I’m talking lower priced areas anyways that’s how it works so that’s always in your bud price . With equipment I would think ok what’s common on the type of machine your looking at that fails ? Hydraulics ? Trans ? Cooling systems , trans etc ya would have to know that About each machine your bidding on and how to fix yourself or make a deal with a mechanic buddy . You have to have the know how or have deal on the repair cost as its to costly to take to a shop and fix heavy equipment and parts aren’t cheap either. My suggestion is learn everything ya can about the type of machine or machines you want go talk to a lot of equipment mechanics especially head mechanics old timers and operators. Find out his often they break down etc etc do your homework narrow it down to the most reliable machine and easiest to repair/ work on either teach yourself to do the fixing or make friends with a mechanic . That way you know exactly what worse case scenario is and the cost to fix it. If your gonna be owner operator you will need to be able to fix yourself as ya can’t afford shop prices and they always breakdown on a job site mobile mechanic ps are even more ! My point is research people learn all you can with the internet you can teach yourself how to do anything. Always take a step back sometimes and analyze a big purchase or decision from a different perspective ask your wife a friend someone you trust add they’re opinion in with yours you’ll be pretty safe ! The wise man is wise because they are willing to learn, listen that’s how they became wise

I disagree, or I would like to add a fourth machine. Rental company equipment. Such as Sunbelt or Able Equipment. The operators may or may not be qualified and most rental machines are patched and pieced together just so they could go out and run. I remember a guy bought a 4 ton bobcat excavator from an auction, the dozer blade and bucket just fell off at separate times. He dumped it because he never could get it to work right.

Auction finds can be good. You wont get any deals, normally market value or slightly less. Even if the machine looks perfect plan on spending a few hundred/thousand making it perfect. It's the little parts that add up.

Do you lump rental and fleet together? A lot of rental equipment goes to auction after they put a thousand or so hours on it, they've made their money back. And it sells cheap cuz it has a rental sticker on it. Alot of auctions will let you test equipment, the one by me does. Also letsdig18 does videos of just going and playing with equipment at auctions. Pretty funny. Soo, rental sticker, tight machine, low hours, low price. Buy it.

If you want a municipality piece of equipment use Govdeals. But I don’t recommend military equipment surplus. Their machines always look like they have sat for months or are just beat to nothing.

I would be more apet to bid on a private owned fleet piece of equipment. Rather than a municipal fleet piece of equipment. Source: I've worked at a private fleet as a mechanic and currently work at the city garage as a mechanic.

I like cat equipment because they can tell you the life expectancies of components... and they are usually right 10000hour for a front diff. Usually blows up at 12000 hours.. well that’s how it work in the underground mining..

Bought off PurpleWave.com once and really got screwed over. I thought I was buying from a state/ local government or Fleet truck, but it was most certainly not. The guy was deceitful. I ended up having to have it towed home (just under 300 miles- which was also a big deal since the truck gross weight was over 10,000lbs). I ended up having to spend an extra $10,000 on a new motor for it. They played it off like it was a fluke deal, but I really don't think so. PurpleWave was no help what so ever and I never fought it, wishing I would have sometimes (like now that I'm retelling it), but didn't mess with it. I still have the truck and has a new motor. Be very Careful is my advice!!!!
