I bought a Citroen 2CV sight-unseen on eBay - FIRST DRIVE!

A series in which I try to justify a spur-of-the-moment decision to buy a car. This episode recalls the heady days of summer 2020 when I was full of beans and optimism about my new Citroen. I bought it from Austin Coulson who'd done some work to the car you can see here: • Fixing up the Citroen ... .

Hi. My grandparents used to drive in a 1965 Citroën during many years in Orléans, a city near Paris in France. Is wasn't a modern car like the 2CV4 ! Thank you for that very nice video.

I was 11yrs old working at the gas station. Strange looking car in America (1973). Everytime that car came in, the shop stopped for at least 15min. The Mechanics (Jimmy, Al and Tony) were all WWII Vets. Tony told me everytime, "its great in snow, if it ever got stuck, you pick it up." and laughed. Fond memories, thank you.

I am so happy you are filming this cars journey. I am most surprised by the stuck brakes because when I got it, the passenger rear wheel cyl was slightly stuck, but a shot of PB blaster cured it and I never had to pull the wheel off again. I miss cruising around the neighborhood in it, but it couldn't have gone to a better owner.. I'll be following along.

Thanks Austin. I'm a little behind on the updates given this is only a hobby. I've put about 500km on the car this year and it's running really well. Goal to drive to another state should be achieved soon!

@@corrieb74 so happy to hear that. I wish I would've known the tuning was the cheap carb I bought and more junk in the tank as that would have saved me a lot of hours chasing other issues.

@@AustinCoulson You and me both, buddy. It's a constant learning experience. I only recently found out that the intake manifold is *supposed* to have a tiny vacuum leak - a very small aperture just below the carb that functions both as a drain and to lean out the idle. It's blocked and that's why I've been unable to get a perfect idle mixture

People might think they’re a joke but if only they knew there is some very clever engineering in a 2cv.

Hi Ben. I was head of Quality Control of the assembly plant here in Argentina and I have had three Citroens. In the last one (2cv) I was rammed in the back by a two decker long distance bus. It pancaked the car as far as the front seats and the back wheels went horizontal like the car in "Back to the future" I found an abandoned bodywork on a country lane and used bits of that to fix things. The car was a 1962 model (425cc) so the top speed (with a following gale) was about 40mph. I've still got the se4rvice manual. Happy Days!!!

Amazing story Robert, thank you! I was in Argentina once and I also noticed that they built the old Riley 4/72 out there as a "Di Tella" I think it was. That was a surprise

French licence plate from 1981, January in the « département de la Vienne » (86). Hi Ben, Glad to see you like the 2cv. It was a great car. It was studied from 1936 and the factory found at the test center of La Ferté Vidame three prototypes visible at the Citroën Conservatory in Aulnay sous Bois near Paris. It was designed by an Italian Flaminio Bertoni. It came out in 1948 and was made until 1990. Your 2cv is beautiful and authentic. Only the rims are the wrong color. If you need spare parts, the best address is in France: Mehari Club de Cassis. Good road!

They are actually great little cars but not for the mountain areas. They are cold natured don't over choke. Also when you stop after driving to start hold acceleration peel to floor. It explains in owner manuel. Enjoy

Hello from a 2CV'er in the UK. That DMV booklet appears to list the car as a 2 door. They clearly can't count. Good to see Austin's 2CV is in good hands.

I had visions of the front bar parting with the hood and smacking you both on the back of head when you opened it on the move. Only needs to happen once... You'll never allow it to happen again. OUCH!! Lol.

I don’t think I’ve ever had as much fun in any other car. When I picked up my brand new Charleston in 1982 I had no idea how to get it out of 3rd gear for 10 miles. I soon learned it didn’t really matter and those who called 4th an overdrive were actually right. Have fun. Oh. You sold it 😥

2 cv 4 with only 23 HP and 431ccm was the worst engine they did for the 2cv. Better change it to the 28 HP with 600 ccm which runs far better, faster and not so heavy noisy... Might have better tho check before having a ride.

I never tried to roll the one I bought for my dad, but did manage some serious body lean. I once followed the one owned by someone I worked with, and he managed to get one of the rear wheels to lift AND he burned some rubber at the front end.

Wow,,that was cheap,,,,your worst enemy is going to be Rust,,!!i can see just looking at the video that sadly the whole back end has lost it,s original seams and shapes and is clearly full of rot and lots of body filler,,,good news is all the parts are available,,id suggest that you find someone who is very 2cv knowledgeable to check it out with you,,,it can all be done good luck,,,

@@corrieb74 Still by prices here in europe,,1300 dollars was a steal as it runs and drives,,so a good buy,,ive restored dozens over the last 40 yrs and a bit like the iceberg that sunk the Titanic,,,the bit of rust you can see is nothing like the rest you cant,,so enjoy the car,,,if it has its original 435cc engine,, you could easily swap that for the Big 602cc engine as fitted to all A series in the last20yrs of production,,,just makzs them more driveable in modern traffic,,,good luck,,

@@julianford8249 Heh, it was $8300. Frankly more than I should have paid for it. If I lived in Europe I would have better options for restoration as I believe entire new bodies are available. Mechanically it's now running great, but it's needed a bunch of work you'll see from my other videos. It came with a 602cc reconditioned engine which now runs strong.
