I recently bought a crown Victoria P71 that was formally used as a prisoner transport vehicle. Needless to say it came with some really cool extra equipment that i was not expecting!

As a former LEO, Let me offer this tidbit. That is the absolute worst car you could try a cannonball run with. almost every driver on the road will slow down to a mile below the speed limit if they notice you. those cars only cut through traffic at any rate of speed with the lights activated. I couldn't tell you how many times I was just trying to drive to a training conference or class and it was almost impossible to navigate through all moving cars. Most departments no longer operate the Crown Vic as their fleet the car but it is so iconic that people still recognize it as such. If you don't believe me before you try your cannonball run just try going down an interstate and sit in the middle lane to see how many people are brave enough to pass you.

Better car for a Cannonball: Kia Stinger. Pretty quick and very discreet. No one’s going to be upset that they got their doors blown off by a Gray Kia. Even if they call 911 to report you what’s the description going to BOLO: a gray Kia ….. yup, cops are going to be real motivated to find that Gray Kia …

I Agree. When I worked for FDNY I would take the unmarked Crown Vic out. I could not get around anyone on the highway because everyone would do the speed limit and unfortunately box me in.. it was white, no tints and just takedown lights behind the grill..

Oh man, I just LOVE these terrific Panther P71's that have been around for decades now. There's a reason for that, they can take a lot of punishment during pursuits and despite being a full-size car, these Crown Victorias actually handle nicely at speed and they can handle a twisty road with no problem at all. I have owned two Mercury Grand Marquis' myself. A '95 and now a '05 that I have owned for about 10 years now and at 115k on the odometer it still rides and drives like a new car. I added in a nice in-dash entertainment center with navigation, cameras, DVD/CD player,, etc so other than looking like an 18 year old car (in beautiful condition) it has most of the electronic goodies of any modern car on the road today. I'm only 63 years old, but I expect this to be the last car I ever need to buy simply because it NEVER breaks down and since I drive it primarily on the highway it's longevity is pretty much a sure thing. However...If I should ever find a wrecked Mercury Marauder in a junkyard, I will buy the bucket seats and center console with the shift lever, and put them into my regular Mercury Marquis. I LOVE buckets seats with the console shifter, so I assume that it should all fit into my existing Mercury with just a bit of work to connect up the shifter linkage from the steering column to the center console...hopefully LOLOL. Thanks for sharing your beautiful P71 acquisition with all of us, and DON'T use your new car on the Cannonball run - I can already see some backwoods sheriff impounding your car, and you behind bars for pretending to be a police officer in a pursuit vehicle. I know it sounds stupid, but there are enough crooked law enforcement officers out there that can make your life pretty miserable running in a fool race like the Cannonball. stick to car shows and parades and enjoy your Beautiful car!

I'm the proud owner of a 99' P71. Mines light blue, former Iowa DOT enforcement. I've read comments saying these don't cut through traffic. I agree that everyone slows down when they see your cop car... But If you're offensive enough of a driver, these cars are insanely good at getting through traffic. I can cut a 20 min rush hr drove across town down to 8 min. Hahaha I love my crown Vic. These cars are beasts. They handle good and definitely aren't slow.

Nothing has better longevity, for the years of manufacture, of the Ford 4.6 and 5.4 TWO VALVE (MADE ONLY A COUPLE OF YEARS). Our 4.6 went over 500K, in a work truck that was always hauling tools and/or materials. Our 99, 5.4, truck is still running strong, with over 430K on it. This is the era when Ford pulled it's head out of it's a$$ and built some quality engines...... Only problem is, around 2003, they reinserted head and cheapened the top end of most of their motors.

I bought my '04 CVPI in 2007, and then an '07 Jeep Wranger in 2010, accidentally coming across one of those kevlar police trunk packs at the Jeep aftermarket accessory store and installation shop in my old hometown. They had one they got stuck with when the customer who had originally ordered it welched and backed out on the purchase. I knew exactly what it was and bought it without hesitation, remembering a recent rear end crash / vehicle fire where a State Trooper sadly was kia in his Crown Vic unit. It had a couple of clear plastic covers that got busted up after a shooting range session when we loaded the trunk up with those heavy .50 Cal. GI metal ammo cans, but the trunk pack still serves well and stores a full sized spare upright on the passenger side.

The Kevlar trunk packs were a safety feature just in-case ammo was left in the trunk on a hot day. (That's what we were told back in the day in the academy.)
@bishopdriver
@bishopdriver Год назад
Gunpowder or smokeless propellant doesn't ignite until 400 F.... No car gets that hot. I'm in AZ. Ford specifically stated that trunk packs were to lessen the occurrences of items puncturing the gas tank during rear collisions...safety shields were also installed on the tank. I'm not even sure they are thick enough to be bullet resistant.
@genefogarty5395
@genefogarty5395 Год назад
A bullet won't do anything in a fire because of physics. The casing needs to be held for the bullet to go anywhere at appreciable velocity. Otherwise, the case goes backwards and the bullet goes forward, equal and opposite reactions and such. Just like in the movies where a guy takes a shotgun blast and flies through a window, the shooter would be on the opposite end of such an immense force and likely fall down at least. The Kevlar in the trunk was for cover under fire, nothing else.
@bishopdriver
@bishopdriver Год назад
@@genefogarty5395 that is an over simplified and partially incorrect response. A bullet in a fire has all the opportunity to escape its casing with lethal velocity... If the casing is against the ground then all escape force is transferred to the projectile... It may not have the barrel for spin and accuracy, but it is still moving at dangerous speeds.... And the Ford trunk packs are not bullet resistant for cover... The design was to "catch" debris from a rear end crash. Ford stated that when they introduced them.
@genefogarty5395

Nice car. Nice find with all those extras. A family member purchased a California P71 that was a detective's car. He really worked on it to make it nice inside and out. He had it repainted in the original brite silver with new window tint and new tires. It's beautiful. The bad news is he has trouble in traffic. It is constantly 'keyed' in parking lots. People give him the finger all the time. He has cars that won't get out of the way in traffic and just lane block at the speed limit when he comes up behind them even in the fast lane. He has just about quit driving it out of fear of bodily injury and actual threats. I was gonna purchase it from him but he has actually advised me not to because of the hostility he has received while in the car. Just saying the car might not be what you expect...
@RustyZipper

What he should do is switch the grilles to a Mercury and wheels out for Lincoln. He needs to put some personalization on it so that it doesn’t look like a detective car. No one cares when a Taxi cuts them off, drives fast or slow, etc. I always recommend buying a nice Town Car or Grand Marquis over a Crown Vic, Especially P71!

I was reminded in a harsh drive down memory lane, during year 22, when I had to drive a very "cop car looking" Crown Vic from Sacramento to Salt Lake City. Man, I wanted to set it 10 miles over and just go, but the traffic wouldn't let me. Everyone went 66 in 70, and 62 in 65, etc... being overly cautious... tobthe point they were so self conscious that the drivers were almost causing accidents. Never again. I had similar experiences. The last Crown Vics I drove were from the 88-91 model years followed by the 91 Caprices. Most were marked. After that it was whatever was ordered off the lots that was within budget. Sometimes we go some decent looking vehicles, and sometimes they took on a fleet look of their own. Closest to a police looking vehicle i got assigned during these later years was a 2012 Explorer XLT that although it was not a PI, came in the same color as the marked Explorer PIs one of the the major PDs in the area. Got cussed out a lot and couldn’t park just anywhere. Of course I also found that trying to move around traffic in a high profile luxury SUV had its own pitfalls and would likely get the “65 in 70” fast lane campers becoming good citizens and calling the police on you.

You wouldve been better off with a Ford Explorer Interceptor or even a Newer Taurus. Maybe even a Tahoe or Charger. And yeah you could probably get away in the little towns where their local PD doesnt have the funding to replace those againg cars and still daily drives a 2003 P71 around. But in bigger cities, this could pose a problem. Stick to the straight and narrow if you attempt a Cannonball.

The drive is from the Red Ball Garage on East 31st Street (long since closed) to the Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach, California, the shortest time wins. Ignore the movies about the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash - everything is wrong there. Find a library that has back issues of Car and Driver and Motor Trend from the 1970s - there are good, important details in the writeups, you'll need to know what really happened in the past. Also a long Time Magazine article from the mid-1970s. A time of under 36 hours is good, 2,863 miles - average over 87 mph. Remember, every minute spent getting gas, food, restroom has to be made up at higher continuous speed (130-140 mph), the real trick is staying awake and alert. And bring a load of cash for the speeding tickets, no Visa accepted.

Brock Yates won the S to SS in '72 and 2nd in the cannonball in '75 with a Cotton Owens built Challenger, so stealth is a matter of opinion. You may want to put some 2:73 gears in there and an auxiliary fuel cell to have any sort of chance. His back seat was the tank for his ride, red lights for the gauges to reduce eye strain too. Popular hot rodding did a feature on the car back in the early '80s. Dennis Menesini was a family friend and the S-K Nutmaster trophy he was given by a past winner hangs in our garage. He had a 165 gallon tank in his crew cab GMC for the race.

Red on the Right, Blue on the Left. I thought the protocol was the opposite of that so a person would know if the vehicle was approaching or going away? Sad, those three lights on the back shelf, The center RED one is the ordinary Rear (Fed Required) BRAKE LIGHT, which had better be working according to the State/U.S. DOT safety regulations. The two "White" Strobe lights flanking it are the Police Options.

Good Luck on the Cannonball Run, my brother -- Yer gonna need it !! Record time is 25 hours, 39 minutes. Average speed = 112 mph. Top speed = 175 mph. The dudes were wheeling an AUDI A-6 -- made to look like a Cop Car. That Black Beauty looks righteous, but all that junk (push bar, spotlite, antennas, etc. are gonna slow ya down. Ya gotta make it SLICK for optimum aerodynamics. Old-timey, "pizza pan" wheel covers would help a lot with the aero drag, and don't forget your famous "bumper tuck", too. Shorty Headers; Hi-flow Cats; MagnaFlow Glasspacks; 2.25 " maximum pipe diameter; exit ahead of rear wheels. Gut the upholstery, dump the heavy seats for Fiberglass buckets, and drill holes in everything that will save weight without losing strength. BRAND NEW K & N Hi-flow Air and Oil Filters -- they'll work perfectly for the 3,000 miles. You're going RACING, so you'll need the protection of RACING oil -- Red Line 50 weight !?? You MAY wanna swap in a 2.73 : 1 rear end gear for a higher top end, where you'll be spending the most time. Brakes !?? The Cop Brakes should be fine, but a fluid change to D.O.T 5.1 Hi-Temp fluid would be wise. Tires !?? That's the BIG expence, 'cause a set of Hi-Po skins from Goodyear or Pirelli will dent your bank account, for sure. Anyways, best of luck to ya -- lettuce no how it goes !! www.mercuryforum.com/forum/grand-marquis-14/1995-grand-marquis-restoration-8937/

Pretty cool, guess What I have the exact same model-color-accessories. Some are slightly different my lights to the Federal Signal console is fully op. I replaced the radio with an Anysecu mic display version, installed A/B switch so I can run internal radio or pipe it through the outside PA system. I have spotlights both sides, had to replace the lens on one. Trunk is the same with a pullout roll equipment system. Same Kevlar bins, I did not get those clear storage trunk bins, those are cool -good idea. My sprite controller lights can be changed to various colors front and back, in the rear window I have two, in the front I have one flasher on the dashboard another mounted above it to the roof. I have plastic George Floyd back seats and a cage though, back windows are bars across and screened. Going to look for a mic- ha ha. Check your doors when you have a chance mine are lined with level 3 kevlar and stickered with a ballistic test. Your paint is better though, mine has splotches on the paint like it sat under a tree with sap. Your antenna look like a Low Jack array for signal hunting, the back looks like it is a 50-40 mhz range antenna. Mine are 800 mhz Motorola with a center top 140-450 mhz dual band hub antenna (I did this for the Anysecu radio)My Federal Signal is a different model a couple extra rows that look like it could act as a switch controller repeater for hand foot units. Then yelp, Air horn and chase (left alley, right Etc.) I figure I will paint it Black again, any suggestions on a color or paint? You are going to love driving it in this config. My two windows are not tinted so people realize no cops are sitting in it and start tail gating or give their dirty looks. Going to tint these soon to keep nosey bodies guessing. YOU can order a US Government novelty plate, I have one on the front as we are required only a rear plate. So looking at the front it looks "100% US Government owned"

As somebody who is quite associated with the Cannonball, that car won't be competitive, if trying to set a record. Also, with all the lights & all still in place, if you get stopped in or outside Cannonball...you could easily be in deep S for impersonation. One of my buddies has put 3 people in prison for it and it started with the vehicle. P71's have mostly aged out, but it's so iconic/recognized...it seriously isnt worth the headache. Biggest thing all those who watch VINwiki miss this huge part- logistics & spotters. You need a network
@bishopdriver
@bishopdriver Год назад
It is only illegal to turn on the lights or attempt to affect another driver under the guise of being a police officer. Different states have different laws but a DA would have a hard time bringing a case for impersonation simply by having colored lights on the car. Anyone can buy them.
@olikat8
@olikat8 Год назад
@BISHOP You'll find out that, even if you could win the fight on that point, it'll cost you dearly. Also, if you get popped and a judge is sitting there looking at least photos of the car, and while technically correct in certain jurisdictions, the "F around & find out" sentiment will get transferred to another portion of the charges. At the reunion last September (on LI) my wife kept asking me if I was going to race a car. I said "No." Which is true, because it's been done over & over and guys like Arnie & Doug will throw money at it like no other to beat you. Very little return. You have to get very creative with vehicle choice. Christopher Michaels loves my idea... Lowers the risk, we know all the players, no stops at all, everybody who join in are known quantities- which is what will shut it down eventually.
@RustyZipper

@@olikat8 - I only know what I’ve seen on VinWiki. This car does not have anywhere near a sustainable speed capability, let alone the fuel mileage required at say 120+ mph. Not to mention it sticks out like a sore thumb, it just screams “fake cop, illegal stuff. “ I just did 1100 miles in my ‘11 CVPI at 74 mph and I lost count of how many fuels stops we made and the handling is like a boat at 100 mph, I couldn’t imagine how much fuel he would need in an auxiliary tank 60-100 gal 🤷‍♂️ (which adds weight and lessens economy/ handeling.
@olikat8
@olikat8 Год назад
@Rusty Zipper it's a lot of logistics & build time, not to mention $. In '81, Yates pulled the plug because people who were gung-ho and going to try it were decent drivers but not "Good enough" to pull it off (certain modded black Countach). I've voice the concern I have that all the attention is going to encourage some to try it and the odds will run out. Injuries and/or death will happen & attorneys are going to find all the videos promoting it & go after certain parties as well. I'm not trying to be a wet blanket, but it's a lot more work & prep than I think a lot of folks imagine

FYI: In many states, it is illegal to have a mounted searchlight on your car, even if it was mounted on one that has been sold to the general marketplace. i.e - you need to take it off. Rest is OK, except if there are still red/blue lights - they gotta go as well.
