I bought a homestead!!! After many years and many struggles I am finally a homeowner! Today I'm taking you all for a walk of the property. The river is amazing! And... I really should have looked more closely at the plumbing...

Hi Garden Friends, I'm Dani from Wicked Awesome Gardening
Welcome to my world of learning to garden. The desire to grow my own food has been within me my whole life and I never thought it possible in the places I have lived in. In recent years I have discovered that this is not the case and there are a million ways to grow no matter where you are!
Now a year into my RU-vid journey I have learned that even more of my dreams are possible! That I can have the little farm and grow my produce and meat and live so much more sustainably! Join me on this journey of my own education and you will definitely learn and be inspired along the way! Step into my waiting room, my classroom, as I transform my entire life along with my garden spaces!

Maybe make the addition an outdoor kitchen and curing/drying area for onions, garlic,squash, herbs, etc. Congrats!

Canning creates so much steam that you just don’t need in a small kitchen. Even everyday cooking in the summer is easier outdoors.

At 14:16 there is a hornet's nest hanging in the chicken coop. Take care of that thing ASAP before anything else. Snow and freezing cold is your friend when it comes to tearing down hornet and wasp nests. Usually you do not even need any sprays --just knock them down with a broom handle. (Maybe stand back and tap the hornet nest just to make sure it really is dormant though...) If you have not taken care of these already I would make this my top top priority while the temperatures are below freezing before it has a chance to start warming up. Congrats on the new home. I'm envious of the property and location close to the river. You have room for all sorts of gardening, homesteading, chickens, and other fun project adventures!

I saw it! There's a bunch of them around. I need to go hunting the next time I get up there to work on the place and get rid of them all! Preferably on a really cold day!

New sub. I bought a "glorified camper" that was in a similar situation. No trash, but in need of massive updates and repairs that were hidden because they were still living it in when I bought it. Yes! I'm stick and tired of the insane cost of renting. I don't make much money. I needed help to buy this place and I have to pay that person back. But even my mortgage being paid of a 5 year schedule is HALF the rent I would have paid and at the end it's all mine anyway. This is money in the bank and no landlord can sell it and displace me ever again. And growing food and raising animals is my dream way of living.

New here! Congrats on your home! Two weeks from today will mark our 1 year at the 4 bedroom 1 bath livable fixer upper on 1/3rd acre sight unseen for $23,000 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We gave away most of our belongings and moved with our cat and dog 1800 miles away! Like yours our house was full of a lot of stuff! We still have stuff upstairs. Including an entire bedroom full of boxes we have not unboxed. We paid cash so we are debt free and mortgage free and I work as a substitute teacher to pay the bills. My husband is redoing a outbuilding into what he calls my she shed but I think of it more as a off grid cabin/small house! It is a home away from home if we lose power because of the woodstove we are putting in it! We are planting berries and raised beds along with compost boxes and we have our 5 hens and a rooster. We should be getting eggs anytime now! After the cabin is done we will enclose the back porch deck with windows so we can grow hopefully all winter long! And we will be setting up water catchment systems on the porch the shop and the cabin. After that project we are renovating another mini shed and turning it into a mini barn to house the chickens, goats, and rabbits! Hens for eggs, roosters for eating (you only need one), Goats for dairy and the babies to sell or barter with, and rabbits for food because they are just a really low cost form of meat! Our goal is to be almost completely self sustainable! We do not have water on our property but the lake is only 2 miles away and we have our fishing license as well for food also. We also only have 2 close neighbors and it is very rural. We love the quiet!

I bought a place like this in southern Oregon in 2015 for 97k A run down 3 bed 2 bath on a couple acres. I had to remove the squatters that had been there for about 4 years living with no water or power. It was a wreck and everyone questioned my sanity. I gutted it and did the interior remodel myself with the help of RU-vid videos. Much elbow grease and hard work my home is now a show piece worth over 570k…. I’m excited for you!!!!!

His grandmother was in the hospital not doing well and their house had zero Christmas spirit and his mom missed so much work for being at the hospital that they didn't have money for gifts anyway. I nominated him and RP picked him. Kid was so happy he cried and made his mother bring him to my house because he had to hug me. "Its not even the stuff. It's that someone cared." He's such a good kid. And Recycled Percussion made his holiday. It was a crummy winter. The grandmother just passed a couple weeks back after a long hospital stay. :(

Plumbing on the ceiling that's a first. I can understand it won't freeze up inside if the heats on. Maybe thats what they were thinking? Any hoot doing pex piping with shark bite connectors is easy and dirt cheap. I wish I lived closer i'd have that gutted in 2 weeks.
@WickedAwesomeGardening
@WickedAwesomeGardening Год назад
Yeah its run on the ceiling rather than underneath to eliminate the need for extra insulation I guess
@builtontherockhomestead9390
Before getting goats, check out poisonous plants. Lilacs can kill goats. Stone fruit trees pose a problem too. Just do your homework. Don't worry about the river area. Goats don't like getting wet, so when it floods they will avoid that area. Now predators can still be an issue so that needs to be planned for.
@WickedAwesomeGardening
@WickedAwesomeGardening Год назад
Everything I've read says lilac is harmless unless they eat a TON? I do plan to keep them well fenced but I know they are escape artists. As for predators it's just more of what I already have in the city, but more risk of bears. I want to get a livestock guardian dog, but also there will be electric fence employed as well.
@builtontherockhomestead9390
Don't make my mistake. First year with a goat. I would let her out occasionally since my only fenced area was my vegetable garden. This goat had just shown up one day. Well, I bought a poinsettia from the FFA kids. After Christmas I put it outside to get a few months of cold temperatures. Someone forgot to tell my goat poinsettias are poisonous. She ate the entire plant. Then later that year I got a free bottle baby who turned out to be special needs. After the vet made sure he would never be a daddy, put him in the garden away from the other goats who picked on him. I had a large Aloe Vera in my garden. He ate most of it. He had the runs for days.
@WickedAwesomeGardening
@WickedAwesomeGardening Год назад
😭 Oh no!!!! I don't plan to let the goats out to browse. Keeping them in their pasture at all times unless we are loading up to go off property, like if I decide to try a goat show. Everything I am reading is saying lilacs are safe. There is something called Persian Lilac but that's a totally different plant (also goes by the name Chinaberry) and that IS toxic. But they aren't the same.

I haven't gotten everything from the town yet. I know from abutting property lines it's 25 ft. They told me at town hall it's all online but I haven't been able to find it. So I'll be talking to them in person later this month. The house is oddly zoned as commercial 😂 so I have to get special permits to have the animals there. I have checked with town hall and she said it will be no problem with the amount of land I have etc.
