Absolutely love your channel. I do the same myself search Car boot sales and charity shops for old VHS tapes of movies that I watched with my Dad and old musical LPs that my Mother would play ( she loved Mario Lanzer ) it's like a worm blanket of love that i miss from the time that they were still with me . I was buzzing when I found Gods Gun on RU-vid my Dad loved that movie . And your absolutely correct sometimes you can't find things on VHS , DVD , Blu-ray or 4K so streaming is OK

I've been recently discovering a lot of films of the 70s which were before my time. 10 years ago I had very little interest. You never know what people will be into and what they will be interested to discover. Naturally these films will be less accessible and the audience will dwindle, but I do believe there will always be someone interested, even if they don't know it yet. It's absolutely wonderful seeing these films find a worthy home and it was a lot of fun seeing you discover them one by one. Stay awesome Heath and keep sending the good vibes.

Very well said. A big part of what I'm getting interested in right now is because of my age and because it's a natural progression of my fandom as I dig further and further back. I didn't start actively seeking out movies from the 1930s until I was around 30!

The ventriloquist cowboy Max Terhune, and his dummy Elmer, appeared in 21 "Three Mesquiteers" entries, and all 24 of the films in the "Range Buster" series. And, yes, a ventriloquist cowboy is as weird and wonderful as you'd expect.

Heath that collection is amazing. I think Quentin Tarantino will be calling you for some source material one day. I don’t know if you are allowed to do this or if it will cost you money, could you place some of these old westerns on your channel and have your own commentaries while we all watch? I know you want to keep these alive but in some way have your own western channel?

The movies would have to be in the public domain (which most of these are) and would also have to have no watermarks. I'm not sure about a western channel, but someone suggested I do audio commentaries for some of these old movies and I like that idea. We'll have to see what the future holds!

My favorite finds are double features. Double features are what makes Drive-In, Grindhouse, and Midnight movie watching fun. I think I own all of MGM's Midnight movie double features. This is how I built up the bulk of my movie collection. There are times I think I am overdoing it collecting blu-rays and 4K's, because I always find myself putting on those old Alpha Video or Image Entertainment DVD's when I'm actually watching movies. The artwork is so much nicer, and the snapper cases have double sided artwork or a brief essay about the movie. I like finding the Anchor Bay Hammer and Drive-In double features, but some of them are miserably expensive online.

Others may have covered some of this in the comments below...but just in case There were 24 Range Busters films in all, with folks drifting in and out of the line-up over the course of the series. Only Max (Alibi) Terhune - and his dummy Elmer - appeared in all 24 installments. There are a few films in which Elmer appears to have acquired self-awareness and presents as a sentient, independent being. Keep an eye out for those, they're pretty creepy, if you're in the right mood. All of the Monogram Range Busters appeared at one time or another as one of the Three Mesquiteers over at Republic. I'd have to look this up to confirm, but I'm pretty sure the main line-up of Ray "Crash" Corrigan, Dusty King and Max Terhune appeared together as a team in both series. A lot of these B's were filmed at The Corrigan Ranch - so he was getting paychecks from both ends. You're going to become very familiar with the twin beer signs outside the barroom entrance. I'm a big fan of the trio western series: Range Busters, Three Mesquiteers, Rough Riders (with Buck Jones and Tim McCoy), Trail Blazers (which featured Ken Maynard, Hoot Gibson and Tom Steele among the teams). Also gotta love Johnny Mack Brown, owner/operator of the most devastating haymake West of Gower Gulch. Have fun! And thanks for continuing to highlight these lively films. Any copies of "Mystery Mountain" left? I've been meaning to order that from one source or another for a while.

I'll say this, it seems like more than it is. Most of the movies are under an hour, so they're like an episode of television. Last night I managed to knock out a film noir AND one of these old westerns in 2 1/2 hours, which is the length of most modern movies now. It's still a lot, but it's not insurmountable. Also, because they're so low budget, they go down pretty easily. They're like potato chips.

I grew up in the 1960s and 70s in NYC. I think by then the popularity of westerns was fading with fewer westerns on TV every year. What we did watch on TV were the movies of the 1930s and 1940s many of which I now own on BD/DVD. Grainy b/w prints cut up with commercials but that's where I started to love these movies. I was so happy to buy the VHS of Casablanca, it looked better on my TV than any broadcast of it ever did. Citizen Kane used to be broadcast on WOR-TV in NYC. An awful dark muddy print but that's all that was around back then. It's only when I bought the restored version on DVD in 2001 that I could fully appreciate that movie. Even the VHS versions of Citizen Kane were all pretty bad starting with the first Nostalgia Merchant release (catalog# VH8002), and even the last official VHS release on the Turner (catalog# 2053) label was poor.

One question - you mention towards the end of the video 'I'm going to watch these for the rest of my life' Do you have/keep at least one DVD/Blu-Ray player (still boxed) that you have put away as a spare playback device? Maybe in 10 years or so they won't be for sale/available new. Or do you think that's not the case?
@CerealAtMidnight

I think DVD players will always be available and will never go away. This comes up from time to time and I like to point out that I can still buy a brand new 3.5 floppy disc drive, 8-track player, and blank cassette tapes, decades after those technologies bit the dust. I just bought a brand new Mac DVD drive for my laptop over the Christmas holidays. DVD is not only not a dead technology, it's the highest selling physical media format. As long as there's money to be made from the millions of DVD customers all over the world, I truly believe someone will make a player.

Not great. Usually about a 4/10. In many cases, these old movies only survive on video tape dubs from 16 mm prints. Sometimes they're also kinescopes, which is a camera pointed at a screen. But as rough as that sounds, Alpha Video often has the best prints available, out of everyone. Their work with Sam Sherman is as close to being sourced from original elements as some of these old poverty row movies will ever get.

How do you handle the non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs? I found that using the zoom function on a 16:9 TV for anything larger than about 40" isn't really watchable as the pixels take over the image. I guess I could watch them on my 20" Sony CRT, but the big screen is more fun. This is why, while I don't mind watching DVD, I shy away if I can't 100% confirm that it is anamorphic or the original aspect ratio is 4:3.

@@CerealAtMidnight It seems like the last few I've bought at Thrift Stores / Pawn Shops / Big Lots have been non-anamorphic...even major titles like "The Abyss." That's why I try to stick with Blu-ray when out hunting...don't want to get home and be disappointed. The only ones I know I'm safe with are the Warner Archive MOD discs as all the ones I've found at thrift stores so far (~8 widescreen) have all be anamorphic.

I wish someone would. I've tried to sell them, but people don't want them so now I'm just throwing them away. I looked into recycling but that's not an option here.

Donate them to your local 'thrift' stores. I used to work at Blockbuster here in the UK and our shop got rid of 100s of DVD cases due to a change in Company policy, which were all going to end up as landfill. I took them round to some of the local charity shops and they were happy to bundle them up 10 for a Quid or something like that...

@@CerealAtMidnightThanks for your reply... pity about the cases but I suppose they've got to prioritise their space these days and I was at "The 'busters" over a decade ago where more folk were probably after empty DVD cases anyway. P.S. loved the video and you ROCK and that's OFFICIAL!

What a waste. They aren’t sports cards. Also how do you determine condition without opening it? At least with comics they open sealed books to determine condition. Or is this just a case of people valuing the cases and covers and not caring about content whatsoever.

You’re brave to pick up so many Alpha Video discs at once. I hope it didn’t cost so much. It really and truly sucks when Alpha is the only physical media option for a lesser known title as they are just about the bottom of the barrel for quality. It is rare for an Alpha version to be solid or better than other options but it does occasionally happen. Every one I’ve ever picked up has been a total roll of the dice because you never know what quality to expect. I’ve had ones be watchable or halfway decent and then others are among the absolute worst presentations I’ve ever seen on any format and make even bad RU-vid uploads of PD materials look good. And then there’s those awful stinky cheap plastic cases on a lot of them! Those drive me nuts so hopefully this lot is mostly the better standard cases. For me the biggest thing Alpha has are various serials that don’t have any other releases but even those I’ve tried are usually deplorable quality. Their discs for Don Winslow of the Navy for example are among the worst transfers I’ve ever seen.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight 7 месяцев назад
Quality is definitely below par, but for so many of these public domain movies, what's on Alpha Video discs is often better than the prints that Mill Creek included on their 50 movie packs back in the day, and they're definitely better than what ends up on RU-vid, which can often be stretched, zoomed, and compressed to oblivion. What I've watched so far has been "watchable," and that's about all I can ask for with most of these, considering the obscurity of the pictures, the lack of source elements, and the poor treatment of these films for the past 40 years. Thanks so much for commenting, Crusader!

This video may be In Color, but is it In Living Color ... On NBC? (Cue Color Palette Peacock) An interview with Samuel Sherman would be too cool; by all means, let's see it!!! (I must express amusement at a title like "Boots of Destiny"; reminds me of the Lon Chaney Jr INNER SANCTUM title, "Pillow of Death", which brings to mind the possibility of a series of genteel, refined British mysteries with titles like "Doily of Blood" or "Teacup of Terror" or something like that.) By the time you said "completely boxed in", I pictured a thumbnail of your clutching hand emerging from a pile of DVD cases like an image out of Tales From The Crypt.

It's all good, for everything that comes in, things are going out, too. With my method of storing catalog titles in sleeves, I'm freeing up more room than I've had in years. On this poster, would I be naked like on the American Beauty poster? If so, I need to get some Ozempic.

You talking about that video from years ago? If we're talking about the same one, my point was not to buy things you don't want just to have a lot of things on your shelf in in hopes of impressing people. But listen, in seven years, a person changes a lot. I don't even feel the same about some of the things I said six months ago, let alone five or six years ago. These westerns are a big part of my focus these days and I will watch every one of them.

I prefer Tarifold brand. They're a little bigger in size than their competitors, but that means you don't have to fold the spine of the DVD or Blu-ray case in half to make it fit. After my first video about it, Tarifold reached out and offered a discount to Cereal At Midnight viewers. It doesn't benefit me in any way, but it will save you a little dough if you buy directly from them. Alternately, if you buy them through Amazon, I get a small commission if you use my affiliate link. 15% off an order at T3Lshop.com using code CAM15. The sad truth is that for many public domain movies, this is the best we'll ever get. There are often no source elements, and even if there were, it doesn't make a lot of sense for someone to restore them if their work can be stolen due to the lack of copyright on the film.

That dude from Blu-ray dot com told me I didn't love physical media the day after I bought all these movies. I don't know why some of us feel the need to try to put people in boxes or keep them out of fandom. But then, that's kind of their whole deal over on that site. They make hundreds of thousands of dollars from the "us VS them" mentality. Divide and profit.
