Well, the last money pit is away with its new owner. I miss it. So now, let’s see if the reputation of the Porsche 928 as the biggest money pit of ALL Porsches is actually true! Yes, there’s still money in the kids’ college fund so let’s give this a shot!
So I have bought a fairly rough ad under-maintained Porsche 928 which I am planning to bring back to health. The aim of this video is to look at what will be required and if I can do it at a reasonable (for that, read not college-fund depleting) cost. Also, do I attempt to do any of the work myself or find someone to help me? What will that do to the cost? Still affordable? In fact, will I HAVE to get a professional to do the work? Aren’t Porsche 928s too complicated for the average wrencher? Maybe this one is? Let’s see anyway! Nothing ventured, nothing gained! I can’t NOT scratch the Porsche 928 itch!
All written, researched and edited by me. You can download all my Porsche model guides at www.jayreadyoutube.com so go and take a look there, OK?
Why not follow me on Instagram too? I am a CAR guy first and I get around so take a look at the reels and pictures that I take because you might like them! Also you get news on my own Porsche, my MG and other life events there before RU-vid! Look for jayreadyoutube on Insta now!

@@hansmausolf7104 Parts are readily available. With a couple notable exceptions (ABS wheel sensors for certain years), either genuine Porsche or good quality repros are there. Not cheap, but it's a Porsche. And the RennList forums have an INCREDIBLE wealth of knowledge. The group may be smaller, but the knowledge base is HUGE.

You'll love it! I've had an 86.5 five speed for 25 years and it's the best car I've ever owned! It's just short of 200,000 miles and still runs like a bat out of hell! It's never left me stranded and never failed to start. They are engineering marvels and it's not unusual to find examples that have well over 300,000 miles on them. They are built like tanks and are marvelous touring cars. Now that you've got one, you'll just want more of them! I've owned a 911 and I'll take the 928 over it any day:) Oh, and BTW, the sun visors are meant to keep the sun off the back of passengers' heads as it shines through the hatch glass:)

Jay congrats on the 928! Great color too. Don’t pay the transport company until you get the damage squared away. If not file a breach of contract claim for actual comp damages; get written estimate of repairs for court (in case they fail to pay); report to various business bureaus etc. They ought to fully make you whole.

I owned a 1985 928s (US) in Prussian Blue over Cork interior. Purchased it for $2000 about eight years ago and daily drove it for five years. Wonderful car but was getting to the point of having to buy a parts car just to have the needed pieces to keep it road worthy. I ended up selling it to a gentleman that was convinced that 928's were going to be the next Porsche to appreciate in value. Took the $5000 I made on the Porsche and rolled it into a 1998 Porsche Boxster with 42k miles. I'm now going back through and watching all of your 986 content! Thank you very much for sharing your adventures and look forward to many more with your beautiful 928S.

Jay, I can only tell you my most recent experience with dealing with painting the front end of an older Porsche. I have a 2014 911 991.1 C4S Cab with 60,000 miles that had too many sand/road chips on the front end bumper and hood to suit me (I am anal about wanting a nice looking paint job, even on an older driver car). I had three quality paint shops look at fixing the road chips with a partial paint respray, they all said the same, Bec of how the front end is constructed, there is no way they could match the paint without my seeing the difference in paint color. I had to have the entire front bumper, hood and fender tops stripped and resprayed (cost of $3K) (I went a bit overboard, and changed out the plastic bits for new but that wasn't necessary).....so that is my story, trying to match old paint is risky business, once done wrong you will see the difference everyday you go to start your fabulous 928S.....BTW I too, think you have made a good choice and you (and all of us) will enjoy and learn about a very cool model Porsche that is probably going to pay you back when it goes back on the market.......I hope this helps you, pls dm me if you wish more detail or wish to just chat about the experience. I am in Boston.

own a '87 928 S4 Guards Red bought at a great price in 2014 and drove it Cross Country (USA). just did some needed maintenance incl., belts & water pump, plugs, wires, distributors, misc steering rack line, brake line and all fluids.. New alternator, starter motor, just went out, and replacing the belly pans, and fuel sender is the current plan... recommend adding a battery cutoff to avoid a dead battery - these cars have a notorious electrical system and can often draw voltage - about as notorious as the faulty fuel sender & broken Trip ODO plastic gear! love the Blue sorry about the scratch. - best of luck - love getting to drive the '28 and must get 1-2 greta looks and people approaching to talk about the car every time I go anywhere - get it sorted and take it to a Car Show - fans will love it.

That paint repair is going to be expensive if done properly. The bonnet is aluminium so you'll have to find a shop that can work with that. Mechanically, Sean Ratts seems to be the authority in the US. I understand he has a long wait list but you may want to at least call him to get you started in the right direction. Finally, congratulations, 928s are amazing cars and very rewarding when running properly. Enjoy!

Great new project. I look forward to your 'I don't know what I'm doing' successful repairs/updates. I love the 928 but scared of the repair costs. Interested to watch your experience. You might get away with painting the bonnet and bumper IF the shop can match the color of the car as it is. Real good body work is an art. I would think the paint code will not match the existing car. If you get insurance money perhaps you keep it and respray the entire car since there are other areas that need repaired.

@@JAYREAD lol I get it. Curious if you've considered this game plan. I've done it several times with my project cars. I often buy another engine. Test for good compression numbers and overall good health. Replace anything that looks questionable/do routine maintenance, and swap it in. Then sell my original engine. I've found this method to be the least expensive option in terms of overall time and money invested in the project. Here's an example. I mentioned before that I'm restoring a 185K BMW. It essentially needs everything replaced, so instead of piecing things together, I bought another engine, refreshing it, bought all new front suspension, clutch, engine mounts, cooling system, and power steering hoses. Once the spare engine is finished, I'm pulling my original drivetrain out, as well as all suspension parts, and replace everything all at the same time. That will be my plan for the 928 I end up getting. 20-y-o+ cars often need a lot replaced. Yes, it costs "more" initially but in the long run its actually cheaper and definitely less headache. In addition, I know I've inspected every part closely so I'm never paranoid that something random can go wrong at any time. That right there makes the driving experience 100 times better! Just a thought.
@JAYREAD
@JAYREAD Год назад

Paint should be no problem for a paint shop that is either a Porsche specialist or one that does a lot of Porsches, but it won't be cheap for it to be done to Porsche standards. I wouldn't be tempted to cheap out, because a) it was original, and b) because of a mix of materials, there's an even higher risk of mismatch, especially over time, if it's not done right. Obviously, the haulier should pay, and they should have their own insurance. If it's a reputable company, there will hopefully be no problems. Just notify them quickly, if you haven't already. It's good that you have video, so show them that. And then get and submit a written quote from a specialist paint and body shop ASAP. Good luck!

@@JAYREAD he main thing is 4.7L Euro S engines making 300HP between '80 and '83 and '84 to '86 Euro S 4.7 making 310HP (though commonly thought to be more like 330HP)... The S cars all have slightly larger front calipers than the standard 4.5L OB cars... Those are really the main things...I think the front sway bar might be a touch larger in the S cars as well as slightly higher spring rates... The odd duck is the 84-86 Euro with the LH fuel injection which uses a MAF hotwire setup. Accounts for a few extra ponies. Only 16 valve variation to have them. Also, the 84-86 are the only 16V with a dual distributor config, ( twin dizzy euro ) which make them easy to spot. The m28/21, 22 (manual, auto) twin dizzy Euro motors had larger intakes, the most aggressive grind of all the 2 cam motors and a 10:4 CR and were reportedly under-rated HP. 330 is the often cited actual hp values. In the lighter early car, the S2 delivered a hp/weight ratio not exceeded until the portly GTS came along. Coupled with a 2.73 diff, they get off the line quickly, breathe freely and pull strong to redline (I hate to lift). As a lover of the snappy 2 cam motor, the 85 Euro is just a hoot to drive. I’ll take an S2 over an S3 and S4.. Also, the M28/21,22 had the EZH/LH ECUs.

The most common problem with the a/c is not freon or compressors. It has 5 vacuum valves for the a/c that openn and close to control heat or cool. When these fail and lose vacuum it defaults to heat. It is dash removal time if that is the case. About a 16 hour job if you diy.I have owned 3 and they all failed. Good luck!
@JAYREAD
@JAYREAD Год назад
Uh oh! I am sure that will have to be done at some stage. The a/c was described in the classic Craigslist way: “Just needs recharging”! Nope!
@roberttowsley8958
@roberttowsley8958 Год назад
If you don't have documentation on the timing belt get it changed ASAP. If it slips your engine is toast. Do the water pump at the same time. Save some time and money. You should have a small wrench for the sunroof for manual operation. Check the tool kit for completeness. Tools are getting hard to find. You also need a compartment cover for the rear luggage compartment. Also hard to find. The steering racks are prone to leakage but rebuilt ones are available. The front spoiler is Uber expensive. Take really good care of it. It can be an awesome car. If you do replace the vacuum valves in the dash take lots of pictures. Would not recommend doing it yourself.

Wow. Rather nice video, although the audio while you were driving was 'less than optimal'. #1 - VERY CRITICAL!!!! If you don't have records of when it was last done, get the timing belt, water pump and all the related stuff done IMMEDIATELY. #2 - These cars are fairly easy to work on. They are unique, and have a zillion 'pitfalls' and 'gotchas' when you work on them, but the information, techniques and excellent write ups & "How-Tos" are readily available. The RennList forums are an indispensable resource. Many folks have learned how to fix their own rather than risk having some 'Porsche specialist' who doesn't know anything about the 928 screw it up. Parts are readily available, although quality parts aren't cheap and cheap parts aren't quality. #3 - Electrical stuff is always popping up. They were 'state of the art' when new, and that means all sorts of interesting electrical issues. Tach is likely bad connectors at the instrument cluster. Hatch release could be a few different things (Do your interior lights come on when the door opens? The hatch release is tied into the door switches, so you have to have a door open for it to operate.) #4 - The 84-86 Euro is commonly called the "S2". It was only officially called that in the UK, but it's the same car, and different from the early Euro S (80-83) and the US S. Considered by most to be the best 16 valve motor (officially rated at 310hp, but likely produces in the 320-330 range). It's a fairly rare variant in the US. I've had mine for nearly 10 years.

How did you decide on this car? I am looking at a 996 that is very inexpensive, but it has a salvaged title. In your video you mentioned it wasn't the cheapest one you found and not the most expensive. Do you have any "non-starter" things that dissuade you from buying a particular car? Thank you for your videos!
@JAYREAD
@JAYREAD Год назад
Good question! I think the key here is researching what you are getting into and then finding the best car you can afford. With the 996 I knew I could afford a pretty good one at the time and this it probably wouldn’t be too much bother. With the Boxster, I bought one with badly deferred maintenance but knew that I could do most things myself and the rest wouldn’t be too expensive if someone else had to. With the 928, I knew they were complicated so I tried to buy one that was at the cheaper end of the market and well the usual selling price below that didn’t have a story. That way, even if I did have to pay someone and put some money into it, then I could still recoup it if I ever sold it. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

You're a glutton for punishment, Jay. This should be interesting. Will the shipper pay for the front end repair? I would insist on it. I'll be very interested to see if the clear coat can be repaired short of a respray as I also have a couple of clear coat blemishes on my 911 door. Would rather not have to repaint the whole door if I can avoid it. Good luck on this project! -Tom

Wonderful cars welcome to the fold. looks like you have a good example. I have two manuals congrats on the purchase. Get on Rennlist 928 Forum . Get the workshop manuals . AT Transmissions need to be checked. Paint is lacquer based from the factory. if you have no history of Timing belts tensioner and water pump change plan to get that done . can be done with help but can turn into a while you are in there. Clean all the ground points on the car. Check fuel lines and for Power steering leaks to protect from a potential fire.
