As soon as she said “if you are watching this right now yes the foal has been born” I screamed

My brother had the same thing with the mare he bought his daughter, but we didn’t know she was pregnant until we walked into the stable in the morning and saw a jet black foal standing at the foot of the grey Conamara mare! The scary thing is my 13 yr old niece was due to go to pony club camp so the day before she worked her fairly hard and galloped her up the field before giving her a bath and put her in the stable to dry off ( she was usually out 24/7 but with her being grey we wanted her clean to go to camp) she had a cotton rug on ( that had cross over leg straps! 🙈) to stop her getting a chill after her bath and was left all cosy with her usual feed, hay & water. We went to check on her in the morning before loading everything to go to Pony Club camp and there he was, a beautiful colt foal happy as can be! How on earth he came out without getting tangled in the rug leg straps GOD only knows!! The mare (Daisy) had shown NO signs of being in foal whatsoever ( she’d had a bit of a belly since they’d bought her 6 months previously but being a good doer and a native pony kept on good grazing that was no big deal) she didn’t bag up until he was born and even then it wasn’t huge but obviously was enough for the little man because he grew up to be a strong healthy STUNNING 15.2 dapple grey riding horse! I’m sure your foal will be stunning, do you have any photos of the father that we could see?

I bought a barrel prospect and sure enough this happend.. Now I have a buetiful colt with a really nice build and he is super sweet, congrats! Free foal❤

People often do sell pregnant mares and the buyer gets a two for the price of one deal. One of my first questions to a seller of a mare, would be if she has been bred.

I totally understand how you feel! I boarded my mustang mare at my friend’s pasture for few months till I found a place to put her at where I moved to. He brought my horses in mid June last year. I started my training lessons with her and never notice a single thing till in December. My friend noticed her belly getting bigger and how she would get a anxiety attack when the cinch was on. She asked if she was pregnant and I responded, “oh no she is just an easy keeper she is gaining weight and plus she has her winter coat so she just looks bigger.” She was still concerned and requested for me to contact my friend who watched over her previously and sure enough he admitted that his Appaloosa stallion has gotten loose couple times just unsure of the date. I was little bit upset that he never informed or even mentioned anything to me as I had plans to do with her. I was going to call a vet but decided to wait to see if she would get any bigger just in case and she did. So I called and have her checked and confirmed she was pregnant and estimated she is around towards the end of March. She had her beautiful HUGE baby girl on Easter around 11:25pm. We believed she kept her in little bit longer till the weather was warmer. Her older half brother (my mare’s first foal also a surprise foal as well) absolutely adores his little sister and cannot wait to play with her when she is older.

Congratulations! We experienced something similar a few years ago when we bought our first horse. She was a beautiful bay mare (category D) ❤ The sellers told us she had to go out on a big summer-field with lots of grass when we took her home. She already had a big belly but according to them, it was just her "summer-belly" and it "looks like that every summer". Of course we believed them - they had owned her since she was a foal! So, we took her home and put her in a big summer-field with some new friends. Her belly kept on growing and we started her training. Very lightly, just to start building muscles and to keep her from gaining more weight. She was always so happy... Our beautiful bay mare ❤ Two weeks later, I found her lying down in the very middle of the big field. Aww so cute, I thought! But not as cute when I realised what was happening... I ran in panic, screamed all over the stables trying to get help. We managed to put her under a big shield with straw underneath her, and we also got to talk with our veterinarian through our phone. Sadly enough, she gave birth to a dead foal. It turned out that the father was a shetland pony (category A). No wonder it didn't make it... Of course we buried the foal in the forest near the stables. Rest in peace little buddy, I wish we knew you ❤

I had that happen to me. My parents bought me a pony and when we brought her home she was a decent sized and when her belly began to grow we thought she was getting a grass belly because the 2 pastures she had access to had lots of grass. During the summer she foaled and had a black dappled filly, the mom is a buckskin and later we found out the dad was a palomino full sized stallion that had shared a pasture with her and the lady we bought her from didnt think they would breed but didnt happen to mention there was a slight possibility she could be bred when we went to try her.

We bought my sister’s horse she was quite underweight when we got her and a few months later she had a little mule. Had no idea she was pregnant nor did they. Her baby was beautiful and very healthy. Literally didn’t know a thing until I was out in the fields and there was a new addition to my herd.

Congrats on the unexpected bundle of joy. I had a similar experience with a mare I adopted. She as well as a stallion and a gelding was abandoned by their previous owner. At the time of her adoption, she already had a still nursing colt on her side. She had a rounded belly and we suspected she was wormy. To our surprise, she was found to be with foal and wormy. Her expected due date was mid to late November; however, she didn’t drop until January. Spent over two months on foal watch and she birthed the one night I wasn’t there. I should have named him Houdini because he was a escape artist from the moment he was born.

lmao this has happened me before. We bought a donkey that was pregnant and we didn't know about it. Unfortunately she had a natural death 3 years after foaling. But we saved her (and her colt) from slaughter.❤

I did the exact same thing too!😅 Bought a mare (long story), told she was a “maiden mare”, and two vets and trainers missed the signs she was pregnant. 😓Did not help she was 16.2 hands and 3/4 Thoroughbred. 🤦‍♀️She burned thru hay that winter like a furnace, got both fat and skinny at the same time, and she went sideways instead her belly dropping. A month prior green horn me noticed her nipples getting swollen, but was told not to worry, it was a “woman’s thing”. 🙄😒 Was informed publicly at a horse show while halter showing her that she was preggo by the judge!! The vet checked her 5 days later....yep. He predicted 1-2 months. 🤯😆She gave birth to a healthy colt 5 days later! Thank God we went to that horse show and had an inkling she was pregnant. My mom flipped out when the foal came earlier then predicted. She would of had a bloody heart attack if we had NO WARNING ⚠️. I met one girl where this did happen😆. The night before her horse was acting “sick”. Worried. The girl went to check on the mare earlier then normal the following morning. Reaching the mares stall, she is suddenly treated by a tiny horse head looking at her over the stall door. 🤣😂😅🤣😂😅 Her parents were woken up by her screaming in shock!!!

I bought a 2yr old from an October sale, told definitely not pregnant...following April she foaled!! Have kept both her and her beautiful boy, wish I knew what his dad was. He's 4 now 💚

I rescued a mare from a kill pen in march. We got her back to healthy but we started noticing her belly is growing round we hope it's just a hay belly but my son also hopes she is prefers.

I realized today that I must watch way too much Bondi Vet because I Wasn’t even paying attention to your Australian accent until you started talking about the summer and winter months. I kept rewinding it and listening to that part over and over again thinking I heard it wrong and then you said a thing about the northern hemisphere and it all clicked into place and I feel like an idiot. Exciting! There are test strips you can buy too that will tell you roughly how close the mare is to foaling! I've used them many times and they are (usually) quite accurate ... if you google "predict a foal kit" then the website to order should pop up!! :)

When I was a teen I had a mare. I had boarded her out at a local farm for the winter. The next spring I brought her back home. We rode allot and she kept getting fatter and fatter all summer. Couldn't figure out why. Finally realized she was pregnant. The guy who took care of her that winter admitted that he had a stud pony that he turned out with the other horses. Well, that little pony managed to breed all the mares. The next spring wsshe had a nice goal that we raised.

We had a mate give birth and we had no idea she was pregnant. She is a very fat pony, so didn't look pregnant. She was ridden a week before giving birth, but the momma and foal is good as gold. The people who rode her said they felt horrible, but it wasn't noticeable case she was back from the field and any time she comes back she's as fat as a barrel

This happened to a person in my stable. She was just about to take out the vet but the foal was quicker, so wehn I went out a morning to feed the horses there were two heads popping up in one of the stables instead of one... the shock was real

I had a horse that mated with her son, the foal we had fine until she was about four and got liver cancer, foundered etc. I know you are a smart horse person, if I could’ve changed anything I would’ve tested for any genetic problem that would be most likely for her breed.

I had a mare I wasn’t showing bred. As part of the breeders guarantee, I had her vet checked. Vet said she was pregnant, great. Next spring, no foal. Had her bred again under the “live foal” guarantee. The preg check after the second breeding said she was still open. At this point, I sold the mare. She foaled the next spring. The local vets screwed up twice...

Yea we just bought a mare a few months ago and we are pretty sure she's pregnant and when we bought her she had an injurie on her leg but that's all good now and my parents work with horses my mom is a vet while my dad works more ranchy and breeding stuff

And despite being a horsewoman for (redacted) years, and a vet tech, she kept assuming it was worms or poor diet, and kept buying her fancy supplements. The one morning she came out and thought her mare was colicking, holy crap...wait, is that a foot? She called the old owners and they admitted they had been trying to breed the mare but assumed she wasn't in foal and sold her.

I rode my mare lightly until about a week before foaling. Exercise in early pregnancy is not harmful. As you stated, exercise has probably done more good than ill.

Donkey. Hahahaha. I'm glad all turned out "Peachy-Keen" as we used to say. So. The Warmblood colt is now a 'foal-daddy'. Nice 2 for 1 ! Reminds me of that pasture full of Arab papa/half 7 other pure breed horse and pony foals at a boarding stable that didn't allow stallions. My uncle still laughs about it. Now they don't allow "snipped tubes" !

I had two friends; one friends' Dad bought a horse at auction and they didn't know she was pregnant. One afrernoon; voila ; a paint filly. The other friends' horse; a colt from a neighbors' property broke into her pasture. She didn't realize that any funny business had gone on, and this time, also, one morning ; shazam ! a chestnut colt !
