Definitely don't destroy it. I'm sure there is a kid in a school somewhere that would love to play that guitar. Scrub off the Suhr stuff, fix it up and donate it to your local elementary/middle school. Just a suggestion.

i really like that idea, fake guitar is taken off the market, people are informed on how to spot fakes via the video, then the local community gets what is probably a better instrument than what is currently at a given school
@dporrill

Second this idea - so many kids would like to have a nice guitar and this one is better than most, even if a fake. Get the name off, plop on a DBG logo, get the story inscribed on the electronics cover and then donate to a school.

@Louis George White Jr so I think it would be fair to say that this fake Suhr guitar could have come with a COA and that should not be a reason to believe it's real.
@fabronaut7478
@fabronaut7478 3 года назад
if you're looking to buy used and someone provides the COA, which should associate with a specific serial number and build spec, you could likely contact Suhr and ask them if it is a legitimate guitar, cross referencing the details of how it is built against known serial numbers. guitars at Suhr's price point are generally built to order based on the options a customer requests, if you order directly from them. if I went to the very large instrument dealer near me and bought a Suhr from them, it would still have a COA and likely an associated spec sheet. even the standard options can have variants in colour, and almost certainly have markings internally, such as in the electronics cavities or in the neck pocket. they're not churning out thousands at a time, so those costs are built into the price of the instrument. I would certainly hope that for the insane money that the custom shops at Fender and Gibson charge, they would do something like that as well. personally, I need to spend probably three times as much as a Suhr on lessons and putting in a lot of practice to justify owning one... but if I could have any lower production guitar, Suhr's on the shortlist. Collings as well. when every single one you pick up is very good to great, you know you have a winner.
@willums4225
@willums4225 3 года назад
I think some certificates of authenticity are made on special stationery that isn't readily accessible. I am most likely 100% wrong though

It stuns me that someone can produce a reasonable guitar in it's own right and then totally discredit it by deliberately making it a fake. Why not set out to make a reasonable guitar and market it for what it is.... a reasonable guitar.
@kenteel2944
@kenteel2944 3 года назад
You comment begs the question: how much did the original owner pay for the guitar ? If putting a fake name on the front ups the price that the manufacturers and/or middle men can sell the guitar for, then there is the answer to your question.
@redrock1963
@redrock1963 3 года назад
@@kenteel2944 - Possibly a fair call. My question, more rhetorical than real, was more concerned with the idea of pride of place in the market. That an otherwise reasonably produced guitar would not seek it's own place and recognition and hopefully gather a following of supporters in a middle price range - rather than being called out as a fake with all the negative vibe that goes along with that. Greco is a good example. Greco made reasonable quality guitars and used their own branding - they never tried to pretend they were Gibson. They are now sought after for their reasonable build qualities.

Agreed. I don't know a lot about the manufacturing process/licensing etc. but it seems like, instead of banking on fooling a few people, they could have produced this for another legit company or their own brand and it would be well-received (although clearly not at the Suhr price but wouldn't the volume of sales make up for that?)

As a guitar player of 17 years, and someone who is getting into woodworking and has restored has also some antique guitars, I have to say the craftsmanship on this guitar is absolutely immaculate. That burst finish is incredible. The routing for the pickups is perfect. From seeing it in the video, the setup, neck, and fretwork are flawless. The imperfections you pointed out (the chipping around the neck screws and truss rod), hell you can find muck ups like that on Gibsons. This thing is insane for a forgery. One of you said it; this guitar, if they started their own brand and made something unique with this craftsmanship, you could easily stack it against Ibanez, ESP, and Schecter in the $700-1000 range. It's a shame so much attention to detail is put into a forgery. I'm going to guess in another 5-10 years (if it's not already happening now), there are going to be forgeries that are so good, that you won't be able to tell the difference anymore. If they're able to mimic things down to this level, they could easily pull it off. The people making these aren't stupid, and can easily access the internet to find videos like yours and figure out how to remove the clues. I think the only way this will end is (maybe) with the NFT market, linking guitars to a distinct, digital certificate of authenticity. It's starting to happen for other physical items in the world. Darrell, please do not destroy this guitar (if you haven't yet). That would be very wasteful. Despite being a forgery, it is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship that some very talented people put together. I know another channel out there that finds forgeries, and they etch into the back of the guitar "forgery", so there's an idea instead of wrecking the nice headstock logo (even though it's a fraud). I'm with others to donate this guitar. Especially during this pandemic. I'm sure there's some kids and teens out there that would absolutely love this thing, and buying a new guitar seems out of the question for them now. What an awesome first or even intermediate guitar this would be for someone. That is my two cents.

Just a thought on what to do with the guitar: This seems like a great candidate for a repair demonstration. Since you know what the tuning problems are, you could do a video about how to rectify them. ;o) The bridge problem in particular is interesting. You could obviously do some woodwork by plugging and re-drilling the 'straight' knife side post, but you could also see if it's possible to do a little metal work on the bridge itself and leave the quilted maple unmarred. As for the nut, it would also be interesting to see a before and after intonation comparison with a compensated nut (such as Earvana). Either way, another great video!

Well, Let me share something. I believe this is NOT a made in Korea suhr guitar, mostly it's made in China, Shandong or Guangdong Province. The real suhr's SN number and "made in USA" parts looks like use laser to burn into the headstock, this fake one just print on it The fake suhr guitar use a thin wood top (like a paper) glued on guitar body and use another wood stick to make binding, you can see the grain is not match I know they can bend the body curve like real one whit 1/16 inch quilted maple but it will take more time and prime cost. They didn't use Gotoh 510 bridge. Actually the OEM version (whole sale from factory) is very cheap. Pickup looks like a Korean brand who provide pickups for some worldwide well known guitar brand made in China. The electrostatic spraying finishing for guitar body l can give a B+, average level any factory can do that So this is not a good copy :) and factory price I believe just around 200 USD. And SORRY for my poor English :(

They may reward you in some way for your efforts and might even tell you to keep it, provided you do remove all the visual Suhr identifiers. Then you would have an intact guitar that is pretty OK and you could DONATE it to a school or charity. As for a potential reward, Suhr might give you a deep discount on a legit guitar. People would dare to splurge $10.000 for, example, a Gibson instead of some brands they never heard before, even if in reality the big names' product quality are worse than forgery guitar factory's product. And they try to maximize the margin by making the quality low, reducing the cost production needed for the fake ones.
@drdrums1
@drdrums1 3 года назад
Judging from the looks, I'd say that guitar started off life different. If I were to guess, the guitar started off as a cheap-o Suhr counterfeit from Ali Express. Probably looked nice, but was basically unplayable. Someone bought it who had some skill, then upgraded the tuners, pickups, new bridge (probably originally a two point strat-style bridge, Wilkinson was the closest fit, but not perfect), better electronics, and cleaned up the fretwork. Whoever did it didn't think to fix the nut. Also, I'd bet money that the body binding isn't actually binding - I bet it's just body wood where they stopped the stain line to give the appearance of a wood binding. The top is almost certainly a veneer, not an actual cap. The giveaway is the line on the "binding" that lines up with the line in the body, suggesting a three piece body with veneer. It may have been purchased by someone who wanted a guitar that passed for a legit Suhr, but didn't have $3000 to blow. The above upgrades you could do for probably $500 or so and an afternoon's time. You'd wind up with a decent knock-off for less than $1000. Or, it was done by someone who intended to rip folks off, buying the import, upgrading it, then passing it off as legit (with a price to match!).
