I bought a collection of old laptops packed in an old leather suitcase, because I thought I recognized a very rare model laptop on the picture of the seller's ad. Lets unpack the laptops like its Christmas and find out if my hunch was correct. ►

For the soft touch rubberization on the 701c, you can use something like everclear or another high-proof alcohol to get rid of it with some rags you don't care about. there's battery acid to worry about as well inside, and with that generation of thinkpad, there are also surface mount caps inside on the board(s) that can go leaky, so it's best to replace any surface mount electrolytics you see. Source is a friend's collection of 750 models, they all had a cap in the board sandwich that were all leaking in every single one, he went and replaced them with modern tantalum surface mounts and the problem was solved for good. I shoudl mention that people are all about keeping the soft touch coating in place for the sake of the collectability factor, but in my eyes it's nothing more than a hindrance that is turning to goop by the day and smells really bad when it starts eating at the top coating of the plastics with it and they react. people say baby powder (talc) is the way to go for that but again, you'll spend way way way less time getting rid of every bit of that stuff than you will remembering to re-apply powder every time you want to use the silly thing.

Feeling like Linus is quite a thing when unboxing / checking out these old laptops. 😬😁🤣 The last laptop indeed is a very nice system. I instantly recognized it when I saw the overview photo! Well spotted!

Awesome. I have 3 Toshiba Satellite Pro 4015CDTs that I'm nearly done restoring. These things run super fast with 100 Gb SSDs at PII-266mhz, 160mb RAM. I have multiboot dos 6.22, wfw3.11, Win95 and Win XP Pro SP3. The Toshiba parts are super cheap. You have to replace the internal batteries of course. Hope you can make your own button batteries. I know someone that can for you quickly. Probably has 2 sets of batteries, bios and sleep memory. Walmart online actually will sell the bios battery, surprised. I paid $50 ea and invested about $200 total on SSDs, RAM, miscellaneous parts. When I finish the first one with thousands of games, I'll clone the drive for the other two then give them sexy themed paint jobs. These are for me and my grown kids to play. Satellite Pros ARE the best DOS gaming and win 95. It's still pretty good with many xp era games too. You can even replace your punched out pcmcia cover on the cheap. I use mine with a special cable to take Commodore 64 games downloaded on disc with my main pc, insert the disc in my toshiba, copy .d64 files using Star Commander to save games and programs on 5 1/4" floppy disks using my Commodore 1541 drive. Pretty awesome setup so far. impactcomputers . com Fun video. Lots of gifts.
