@@gjermundification Really depends on what your looking to do with the HMMWV. There’s anything from changing the power/ignition lever into a keyed switch to make it a little more secure, changing to a 12 volt system if need be, adding a Banks Turbo kit for a decent power/fuel economy increase, swapping the 3 speed transmission out with an overdrive unit so you can go highway speeds without it sounding like a rod is going to shot out the engine, full engine swap to either a LS unit or new turbo’d diesel, A/C add-on, etc lol Obviously all varies in parts/costs, but you can make these fun and street-able if you can/want to make the investment.

Randy. These Humvees do go pass 100k miles. They are hard to find because most don’t drive them but I work at the only GM dealership that has the only GM Certified Hummer technician left in the world that works on them all the time. We have about 30 right now on our lot. Arnold Schwarzenegger brings his H1s to use and we just shipped one to Dubai. They are crazy fun vehicles and crazy to see each unique build or original stock.

Oh jeez lol, those H1s were junk even when brand new. Back in the mid 90s our platoon got a brand new one after the original had broke its lanyards during a chopper lift and was destroyed. That Brand new H1 ended up deadlined and in the shop about every 6 months. I’m still convinced they were intentionally built like crap to milk the govt of maintenance and parts costs. Oh and since it doesn’t have a key or any anti-theft measures, you better get a chain and padlock to secure the steering wheel….if it runs long enough that they can even drive it away lol.

I bought a 1986 military truck that spent its entire life at a military airport and it only had 4600 miles on it. If numbers in the odometer are not lined up perfectly, if they're kinda jagged, then it has turned over and has 102,000 on it.

220 is normal for these to run on, you should hear the fan click on when it gets above that, it usually comes on till it gets to 200-210. Diesel engines runs hotter than gas engines. You also want to get yourself a device to check the temperature, these military gauges are usually not that accurate

Always buy the one military surplus vehicle you WANT and three more of the same generation for parts to keep the one running. Also track down, on the internet, all the manuals and as many tools (MILSPEC) for the vehicle as possible. With the Humvee being on the way out, many more should be hitting the civilian market soon in various forms of repair and disrepair. Also keep an eye out for the auctions held on military installations as PDO yards can be your friends when you need "stuff" for your surplus vehicle.
@TaffPlays
@TaffPlays 2 года назад
The difference between a Humvee and a Hummer H1 is the Hummer H1 is the civillian model which started in 1992, while the Humvee is the military version and is older, started service in 1983 and still is today. Your's has the 6.2 non turbo detroit diesel being a 1989 model since they didn't get the 6.5 until 1994. It's a cool truck, now you need an H1 Alpha with the Duramax, a regular H2, an H3 and H3 Alpha and you'll have the whole lot minus the EV version, which is stupid money at the moment during the current market.

Those 6.5s ain't too bad unless you try to add extra power to it. You should look at your engine block and see which 6.5 you have, the GEP 6.5 had numerous things approved on them which fixed the issues that the older GM 6.5 had. If you got the GEP 6.5 then you'll have a pretty solid engine. The 3 speeds are pretty solid, but I'll never want one just because of the limited speed with them. I have the 4l80e in mines with overdrive and I have done 70 in it pretty nicely. I recommend you to install the kascar grounding kit to this while you at it, that can save your glow plug smart box (thing you referred to as black box), that cost around $800 and will fry your glow plugs in a heart beat. These things are commonly known for issues due to bad grounding, its an aluminum truck mostly so grounding is an issue with these. It looks like your humvee had quite a bit aftermarket things done to it, what's them wires that seems like its coming from where the snorkel valve suppose to be located at? I think 9k is an alright deal but if you ever decide to get a 2nd humvee, you should look into the m1123s are newer, you can get them for around the same price. I got mines for 11.7k last year, it got 4 speed with overdrive, 6.5 GEP, and came with a top plus soft doors. I did have to do some things such as change the generator, glow plugs, smart box (Didn't have too with the smart box & controller, but I want this thing to be a solid truck), and I also had to do the trans internal wiring harness over. So far, its been a really solid truck and I drive mines quite often

We had a fleet of humvee's. The first 6 were parked within a year as they kept breaking down and cost a fortune to maintain. The next delivery of 25 the agreement was changed that parts were supplied at the cost of GM except for consumable items. I looked around for online for them last year and a couple were up for sale for ridiculous amounts by private parties.

To answer your question. The real one is from AM General. The not real one is General Motors. Civilians wanted more luxury then the H1 and so that is why they made a copy with a gas engine. Two quick facts your may already know: They are designed to sink to the bottom when crossing in water in order to keep good grip. The front tires stick out a bit from the bush guard on the real H1 so that you can climb almost vertical over a wall or surface. We had one with the AC and Armor plating in our unit. Top speed was about 40mph but it was a bit better around IEDs. Thanks for the memories. (FYI-ours spent more time in Motor Pool than on the road.)
