I bought a used Pimax over a Valve Index... But at what cost?

Used Pimaxes are cheaper than used Indexes, and have better specs to boot. Why is that? I bought one to find out...

Sorry for the Gap in activity over the last month or so! I was unexpectedly busy over the holidays. I'm just leaving this here to let those of you who are still waiting on the promised 3D models and troubleshooting videos know, that I'm going to fully commit to getting those done before I start work on my next project! Thanks so much for your support and patience! See you soon!

I'm in the exact same situation. Just bought a used pimax and a used htc vive bundle for the controllers and basestations. I look forward to your solutions for the vive wands. I saw one guy made almost knuckle like fingers mod with soft sensors, but he abandoned the project. I wish you luck on a project, where is does seem like there has been any innovation for at least 3 years.

The Main reason I don't like the Pimax headsets is the Lack of Manual IPD Adjustment causes mass eye pain & strain. Want the High FOV but I don't want to be cross-eyed (It has happened to be before wile using their headset), Hope they make a proper vr headset at some point with real 200 FOV, Pancake Lenses & Manually IPD adjusting.

Vive wands are built tough (a friend made a hole in their wall as they hit it with the wand). They are best used when playing 'Beat Saber' as they feel like you're holding lightsabers! Some old VR games on steam only work with the Vive wands (maybe steam's controller remapping will help using other controllers, but if you ever get some better controllers you can reprogram them into Vive trackers (for full body tracking)!

i hope you got an index within this time man, godspeed also im unsure if you've heard of Bigscreen but their new hmd is something to look out for (if you havent already got an index, i recommend preordering or waiting until the release models are out)

so do you think this is a good upgrade from the quest 2? i could get it for $200 or the index i see multiple listings as low as $650. beyond is out of the question if i’m spending $1400 i’d rather save the extra $200 for a pimax crystal. but what’s the most plausible option?
@uzikun
@uzikun 11 месяцев назад
@@bhumelti636if youre coming from a quest, get an index and into the steamvr ecosystem, use that for a year or so and then if you crave more either order a beyond or wait for deckard. pimax HMDs can be a tweaking mess and the crystal...just isnt a good HMD. if you want a standalone/pcvr HMD id suggest the pico 4 pro

Great video and an interesting perspective on the used vr market. I do want to point out that all the glitchy effects and some of your sentences being cut off was a bit irritating to me. (Mainly the high pitched sounds) Definitely gonna keep an eye out for used pimax headsets now. And I agree, the Vive wands are poorly balanced and a hassle to use at times, interested what you'll come up with.

Hey on the bright side, once you eventually buy some index controllers instead, turn those old vive controllers into vive trackers, that's what i did when i upgraded from the quest 2, to the pimax 5k super

a year later and thankyou for this video anyways. I just jumped from a cv1 rift to a used full index kit and I've been having back to back issues, many that were present here such as the funny IPD. Thinking theres some getting used to the fancy new options that's required when leaping so far in tech. Only real reason I didn't go for pimax is the weight balancing was too inconsistent but usually too far forward for how long I can live in vr. That and also I lacked everything, controllers and base stations which were still too expensive to buy stand alone. But hey at least now I know that when my index does kick the bucket very soon I know what could relatively cheaply fill that void of high end tether that isn't my kidney demanding bigscreen (I mean I have a spare...)

USB C cable joke at 13:00-ish got me, thanks for the laugh. I started my VR journey with a CV1, and upgraded to a Rift S right before they quit making them. The jump in visual clarity was incredible even if the jump wasn't that big. From there I went to a Quest 2 (link cable) and have been enjoying it since. However, I am starting to get tired of Meta and the direction they're pushing their headsets. I originally went with Oculus over HTC purely because the controller design was better in every regard. It was comfortable, ergonomic, and natural. I've heard questionable long-term reviews about the index controllers and am really hoping for cheaper alternatives that are hopefully a little less clunky before I buy a headset that uses the SteamVR ecosystem. I originally wanted a pimax as the FOV sounds really appealing to me, but I've always heard iffy reviews. Yours and a few other's reviews have assured me that Pimax's headsets are comparable in quality to others on the market, and I'm no longer afraid to purchase one when the time comes. However, I think I'm going to wait and see how their S-tier 12K idea plays out before I decide to invest in something like a 5k or 8k. If it ends up being as great as they say, I may just decide to invest in one for the long-term VR experience. We'll see I guess.

14:53 This thought is going to be less useful for myself as I've already committed to building gloves (which as a side note, I love the Knuckles controllers, when they work, but you really start to feel the annoyances of using a "controller" in VR), I have basically exactly the same feelings about the wands as you, and had the same desire to fix the horrendous control surfaces. And when all I had was the wands for controllers, I did the measurements. The trackpad is ~4cm in diameter, there's a decent amount of room in the controller when you remove it for activities, and Nintendo Switch joysticks are ~1.7cmx1.7cm at their biggest, not including the screw mounts. Might have to do something about the tact switch in the middle of where the trackpad sits on the main board, but between that specific easy to source low profile joystick and tact buttons of all shapes and sizes you could ask for to stand in for the A/B you'd find on any other sensible controller, you'd be well on your way to making the wands actually usable as VR controllers. Of course getting the other electronics on it would be a pain, my plan had been to have the microcontroller for button and stick I/O to the PC on the top of the controller but underneath where the trackpad sits, to the side of where the thumb meat is when holding it, but I don't there really is a optimum place to stick a microcontroller. Do with this information what you will, and I wish you luck if you do decide to do the thing I never wound up doing.

Nice video even i found the effects a bit annoying. I had a similar experience: I had a Lenovo Explorer for years and some months ago i tried a Samsung Odyssey+ and was already blown away from the slighty higher FOV the Samsung has over the Lenovo. Then on Black Friday i've just bought a new Pimax Artisan and an second hand OG Vive set for the lighthouses and controllers. After i struggled the same IPD problems and a lot of eye strain and headache for the first day, i found out i have to set the IPD offset to -1.5 for both eyes and since then i'm suuuper happy with the Artisan. Even if i think the stock face foam is the most comfy i've ever seen on any vr headset, i replaced it with an pu leather replacement. And i changed the KDMAS to an Vive Deluxe Audio Strap which gave me a way better fit and the audio sounds just fine and can be connected without this stupid y-adaptor. And i absolutely hate the Vive controllers too, so after two months of pain i just ordered Index controllers yesterday since steam has them in stock again for my country!
@brockoala2994
@brockoala2994 Год назад
Thanks for this! I'm also looking to buy an Artisan, but there seem to be too little reviews and comparisons on it. Most people just compare the 5K+, which is way more expensive and way less available in my country.

As a Pimax kickstarter backer and user since Feb 2019 (5k+ and now 8kx) I always watch these videos with alot of skepticism, but you pretty much naiked the Pimax Experience on the head. Its not all clear sailing that's for sure but pound for pound it's my favorite headset just behind the quest 2 for features that can't be replicated anywhere else. The FOV is mostly a game changer and until anybody else dares make a wide FOV headset Pimax is unparalleled. Subscribed.

I had bought a new Pimax, then switched to a used Index! One of the best decision of my life. If you're consdering Pimax: Don't even think about it. Aside from the many issues, the bigst issue will be the eye strain! It will never go away whatever IPD you have. None of other hmds I tried including Samsung Odyssey, CV1, Quest 2, PSVR, Lenovo, and Index have this issue, and it is a really big issue with Pimax!

First off: You went all out! In the editing of this video. The glitchy cutaways made the video feel more... sophisticated (for a lack of a better term. Secondly, it was really concise and to the point (par for the course when it comes to your videos). The only other times I've heard of the pimax, it was in the context of it being rare, expensive or very niche (or all of them). I'm surprised that it sells for so cheaply on eBay. While a headset upgrade sounds very interesting to me, I want to get fullbody tracking first (hence why I liked your last video so much) Overall, fantastic video, hope you enjoy your new headset

@kingoftanks1682
@kingoftanks1682 Год назад
@@chadef555 I have never tried the valve index because valve doesn't sell hardware in Australia. I do use index controllers but I imported them through pimax when I bought the 5k super. And for the pimax sword controllers they are alright, I haven't tried them personally but I know a lot of people in the Pimax discord server has them and they are essentially a upgraded HTC vive wand a vive wand v2 if you will. They don't really compare well to the index controllers because they have a bunch of minor issues that add up to making the controller a little bit frustrating. But that's all I can say on the matter. You will need to get in contact with someone who does have them to get their feedback.
@chadef555
@chadef555 Год назад
@@kingoftanks1682 thanks for the answer :) I'm gonna look around for some more comparisons. The only things that I'm really concerned about regarding pimax are: 1. Index has some special subpixel layout making thinks sharper. Since the pixels per degree are basically the same in pimax Vs index due to wide FOV on pimax I wonder about screen door effect and looking at the far objects like enemies in the distance. 2. Some people say that facial interface of pimax has a lot of light leakage on the sides due to being extremely wide. While index has a really good 3rd party facial interfaces i don't know much about options for the pimax. Would you be able to tell me your experience with pixel density/screen door effect/long distance viewing and facial interface? In a few months I'll most likely going to buy pimax 5k super or index so I want to make sure to choose right.
