Boxster S Rebuild: Episode 1
Hi all! This video is the introduction to my 2005 987 Porsche Boxster S; my new project car!
I bought it knowing it has some potentially pretty serious engine issues, so this car is going to the subject of many upcoming videos where we fix the engine and mechanically restore it back to full health… a Water Cooled Restoration!
If you enjoy this type of content, please SUBSCRIBE to see much more! And please drop a LIKE on this video if you enjoy seeing project cars such as this one.
Thank you all for watching!

Ticking in warm-up is normal. Previous owner might not have been clear on when it was actually happening. That being said: Guessing it’s likely a failing coil pack, spark plug or fuel injector. That bank of pistons seems to run a bit hotter (a partial contributor to bore scoring in the larger engines - though not the 2.7 or 3.2). With that mileage I’d service everything: coil packs, plugs, serpentine belt, water pump, and all filters (air, oil, cabin) and fluids.

Thanks for the feedback! If you want to see how it plays out, I end up giving a full breakdown of what went wrong in the subsequent episodes.

A failed hydraulic lifter? Not all that common but if it is, you probably got a great deal on that car! I look forward to the next video.

It seems that’s plausible! However, I’m still not convinced there isn’t more to the story :/ I’m working through that now.

@Fun_Ahead_TV_Official My next guess would be to change the plugs and coils (probably need it anyway) and then check all of the accessories and pulleys. Alternator pulley?

My 986 2.7litre had the same ticking noise when it was cold started. Went away after a couple of minutes. Fault was rectified with a new drive belt.

Thanks for the input! Dang, awesome you were able to clear it up with the drive belt! Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be so lucky :/

For the P0456, see if your gas cap gasket is still in good shape. Mine was cracking and triggered that code. Also take a look at your strut bump stops to see if they have disintegrated.

Thanks for the tip on the gas gap and bump stops; I’ll check them!

Ohhhh shit Dave! My guess is just a coil pack, but that's because I had a pair of them just crack and disintegrate on my 996 so I'm heavily biased. Okay now to go watch the backlog and see what horror actually awaits you. Good to see you doing cool stuff, man!

Thanks for this video. I have the same car with the same issue. Mine is a 2006 Boxster S with a 3.2 liter engine. I have the same ticking sound at idle. I had the engine bore scoped at my Porsche Specialist independent shop. They went in through the sump and the spark plugs and found slight discoloration on cylinder #6. Their conclusion was that there was nothing to worry about. I'm not using much oil just 1/2 quart between oil changes. I would like to know what the ticking is about if it's not from bore scoring.

Thanks for the comment! Interesting you’ve got the same tick. Well, many more videos to come… currently filming the process of digging into the motor, so we’ll see.

I should mention that the service manager at my independent Porsche Specialist has a Cayman with the same tick. He said his was most notable when he was at a drive up window. That's the same for mine. He has a 3.4 liter and I think it's a 2007. I am very interested in what you find. @@FunAhead_TV_Official
