Just imagine if those walls could talk! From the hard laborious days of our Country's beginning to the current time. From Indians, British soldiers, wars, wild untamed countryside and it's STILL standing.... amazing!! This cabin needed a family like you! It would be so worth it to purchase a metal detector, you never know what you'll find, money, historic treasures, etc.. They would have had the loft for the children for warmth, parents slept on the main floor. Also, they would have had an outdoor kitchen or another small building for 1 during the hot summers. Good to hear your gratefulness for America, a place that so many of us take for granted. Hats off to all of you, be safe!

Yes. I agree once the foundations and some bottom wooden beams are repaired or replaced the cabin would be good and have a more stable foundation. Also. By the looks of the original layout of the cabin and the inside beams it looks like half of the 2nd floor was possibly cut and removed to open up a bigger sealing. That was a typical design in the 1950s through today, So likely with the kitchen layout of the cabin was slightly renovated in the 1950s/1960s. But some parts of it maybe older or original like that wooden cabinet that you pointed out in the first video on the cabin.

I can see your guest is like most contractors out there. Saving historic structures takes a special approach and attitude. I recently completed saving a historic summer kitchen a tree partially crushed. Contractors all said "tear it down". Homeowner found out about me and I brought it back to better than before. It seems the previous alterations may have caused more issues than the age itself. The bulging in walls could be due to removal of floor and ceiling joists. The chinking should be convex meeting logs recessed a bit, not concave meeting logs at the face. I would bet the house originally had steps not a ladder. Typically, the stairs would be "winders". A staircase in a corner that takes a turn w/o a landing, by using pie shaped treads. I live in an 1857 log home I have renovated. These buildings can be saved as long as the desire is there!

I am going to enjoy this project immensely. I live in a 40 year old "barn", constructed with 400 year old dairy barn timbers. The "house" is in northern Vermont and the timbers came from the coast of CT. Been sitting at my center pole trying to figure out how I could dismantle it and put it back together on a different part of my property. Hope you can find some great advice on how to proceed with this project. You have something very special in that cabin.

This would be very cool to refab. But as soon as someone said termites, it just increased the difficulty exponentially. I'm not sure how much you want to keep original. But if I were doing something like this and money wasn't an issue. I'd probably disassemble it piece by piece. Salvage what can be saved. Have fresh logs cut for what can't be saved. But do it like it would've been done in 1780. All by hand with hand tools. I'd probably re-entend the second floor back to the fireplace. Remove all appliances that weren't part of original floor plan. And even though seeing the original foundation is still there, I'd recommend replacing it with something more reliable. Weather that's using proper motor around the stones or just going with something more modern and trustworthy. Just my thoughts. I'm going to keep an eye out for more videos on this. Because I am interested in where this goes. I'd be excited to stay in something like that. 👍

Well I figured if you took a good look you would discover where the original second floor tied into the walls....your friend has a good point to dis mantle the structure....or at least take it down to where the second floor used to tie in....then you could fix your foundation & replace any damaged wood and be less likely to have your structure twist or collapse on you.....then you could put it back together with the second floor and put it back the way it was originally if you choose....well good luck however you choose....I will be waiting on updates....

@@thezaytsevs them logs are still strong as back then but the foundation and sill logs (base logs) will need to be redone for safety of the structure. I'd listen to you friend about dismanteling the 2nd floor log by log and board by board to lighten the load (make sure you re chink it) the original chinking will crumble also make sure to lacquer the logs to preserve them but remember it's ok to replace logs that are rotten because they'll age so they don't look out of place

Creativity in some older homes came out in the carpenters. My uncle Willis White built his own home including cupboards. He had small space for a staircase to the attic [finished later into bedroom]. His solution was to curl the stairs around a tight circle and the step rise varied and in one place was around 12". It was terrifying to get up and down, but I slept upstairs as a kid and knew things felt solid. He made it work. No problem.
@michaelpcooksey5096
@michaelpcooksey5096 Год назад
Those stairs 'curled' around only 180 degrees before ending at the attic floor. He had boxed the entire thing in so one could steady themselves on the walls. Curling around is likely a misnomer. Straight for 5-6 steps, then 1-2 steps turning and then final steps straight up, sort of like a hairpin road sort of deal. He had a great reputation in his smallish Iowa town and anything he built got purchased quickly... to include commercial buildings.

Looks like this old cabin needs to be taken down, logs numbered, replace all the rotten logs, releveled and restored. Quite a job to preserve this cabin. But, mostly just labor intensive.

The bottom exterior beams are gonna be a mission and a half. I'd say you're gonna need some piling/slabs ( ie foundations ) and a means of temporarily relieving the load. That is raising and/ or supporting the whole structure or at least the majority of its weight. It may be that excavating part of the ground floor of the house ànd stabilising it horizontally to the exterior via steel beams is the way. Not cheap and not a DIY project. You need a proper third party engineer to survey this and expect to spend an amount which will make air bnb income look like chump change. My advice as a carpenter/ rebuilder would be to build a cabin from scratch for a fraction of the cost. Good luck.

@@thezaytsevs just a sincere opinion. Trust me I have experienced this situation with renovations and sometimes it counts to build new. I know you won't! but please get expert advice on ŕhis.. what kind of wood is the house made from?

I doubt that Abraham Lincoln ever stayed in the cabin because it’s in West Virginia and Abraham Lincoln was from Illinois. Abraham Lincoln was a two-term president but the Civil War happened under his watch and so I highly doubt he ever stayed there. I do think you’re a funny guy and energetic and I came across your channel by accident but now I’m watching all your videos and will try to share them

What a beautiful structure to have on your land. Hope it all goes well. Seems the original undoing was when they took out half of the second floor. They should have left some of the floor joists. How about securing the opposing long sides where the rafters were cut with some cables and turnbuckles. In the end you will find you are going to have to take it apart and put it back together because the moment you move that structure, all the clay is gonna crumble right out.

@@thezaytsevs I have seen this done on very old brick structures up here in New England. But those are metal rods that span the open area, go through the walls on both sides and are bolted in with decorative washers on the outside walls.
