Exactly! I bought an ex track 2007 R1 with 22000 miles on it, the thing looked mint except for the safety wires and fairings. The maintenance was fully recorded, and all it needed was new tires which came with the bike, and valve clearance needed to be checked. Not a bad bike for $4500
to my experience: Yes, since it is a track bike people will literally search whether it has any flaws and fix them rihht away... as it is a track oriented bike, it requires maximum maintenance and every nook and corner is looked upon
Well, to say so in this case would be a bit of a stretch. I'd be curious to see how the oil situation is, as well as what you can see when you take the spark plugs out. Most of what he covered was cosmetic with the exception of the quick shifter not working as well as the throttle issue.
@@otlndsh he's a youtuber first, rider next.. didn't even know bitubo and that it probably had racing pads it doesn't really work until it gets to temp. so he just complains that racing suspension is automatically hard and the brakes don't work. lol
You can always contact Liqui Moly and ask them if you can send in a oil sample to be analyzed. Will make for great content and they will be able to tell you the life and conditions of your engine from the oil.
Also, if the bike was maintained by Ricky Morias, The father of Sheridan Morias, who races in WSBK, EWC, multiple superbike winner, and if you never seen Ricky ride, it's something to, even with his foot in a moon boot, he still rides a bike dam good. Keep that Bitubo suspension as is, only take the bike to Ricky to have it setup properly. Remove the race pads, its probably EBC or SBS pads. Do some research on that HM Quick shifter, you are missing something. If it worked before, maybe you are not doing something correctly. Ricky can help you with that as well. When you are done there, take it to Martin Blake, Blake IND next door and put it on the dyno. He will be able to tell you what has been done to the ECU, he is also very knowledgeable on bikes. Those two gentleman know much more than any of these street squids do. Ricky has built R1 motors for Shez for Nationals as well as a lot of other guys in SA. Whatever he tells you about the R1, you can believe him.
@@845racingworks Yep. Those race pads need heat to bite. If you’re riding on the street only, get some proper pads for the street. And the oil sample video is a great idea. You’ll receive a sheet which all the details of your oil and engine health.
Yeah most likely the bike though it was going through the warmup prrocedure and disabled throttle input. If he'd have waited the right amount of time it would have probably begin working again
That tank cover was designed to keep your butt further back in the seat ad to also give you better surface area for your knees/thighs. It’s great on the track but might not be comfortable for street use.
If you end up doing electrical work, do yourself a favor and use a soldering iron with heat shrink. Also, search up a "union splice", it will be your best option for connecting wires together and will make a strong mechanical connection. I am an aircraft mechanic and I restore bikes on the side. Great to see you chasing your dream bike. You will know more about the bike and have a deeper appreciation for it once you have completed your restoration. Cheers
@@tonn333 yes. You use solder to mechanically connect the wires and then use heat shrink tubing to protect it. When combined with the union splice, it make a very good connection and makes it not likely to break in that area again
@@tonn333 yes. Just make sure you put the heat shrink on before you make the connection or you have to unsolder it. Done it before, it’s very frustrating
Pros of living in SA: You can ride around the midrand on a track bike without plates or lights. Cons of living in SA: Good luck fixing all the electrical stuff on that bike. I'd also like to know the story of little kitty cat.
Most track bikes are well cared off. Oil and fluid changes before every and after a race They use the highest quality oil and filters and are properly tuned, not some quick remap or reflash of the ECU. Looks like the issues you have are mostly cosmetic with this bike Though I'd switch back to the stock Suspension and sell the race suspension to make up some of the costs lol, those things are super hard on normal roads
You finally bought one! I felt the pain when you sold your old R1. I am currently with my rj15 still and dream about a 2016 R1 aswell. Can't wait for the next Video!
Is that an enormous frame slider? The dish looking thing? Also, keep that bitubo setup for dadgum sure, man. That's high level kit, is it not? Rebuild, if anything. What a find!
had my first motorcycle accident ever,, clipped a flat-bed, the mirror was smashed and pulled the handle-bars towards me and got high-sided... no injuries but it could have been a lot worse. First couple days I was thinking "never going to ride again, it's not worth it" but over time I came to realize it was just nerves and anxiety about the bike, reporting the accident, insurance w/e but since then I have come to terms with it and picking it back up next week. Cosmetic damage: $700 required repairs to make it safe: $100. I got stupid lucky. Your videos post-accident really helped me grapple with my fears and put them into perspective. Thank you!
that's a great deal you got there with that bike...I'm guessing that it's already got a remapped ECU and racing parts are really awesome so...just get the original fairings re-painted and fit the lights and you're good to go with a more powerful and capable "street bike".
I think Ex Track bike myth is bad. As with all bikes, have a look at it. When buying a supersport, it's going to have been ragged either way. But a track bike will have 'track depreciation' at like 4000 miles vs a street bikes 20000 miles. The engines are made to rev high. It's not bad for the bike. Has it been serviced. Has it been crashed. Typical stuff to look out for.
stock KYB are more than enough for spirited road riding and the occasional track day. Bitubos are a waste and could be sold to make up for some of the repair costs
That’s your opinion. Some people like to have premium parts even on a road bike that will occasionally see the track. Suspension and tires are the best places to upgrade a bike that will see track time. Your statement about selling them to make up repair costs could be said for the stock suspension also. The bitubo are better, they are not a waste… they should stay on the bike. There are other commenters who’ve said the same. You’re entitled to your opinion and I’m entitled to mine. The bike isn’t either of ours and I couldn’t really care less if he keeps them or not, but saying they are a waste is just wrong. They are better than stock.
My dream bike, used, at 25% off the going rate? Absolutely! 🤩 Considering it would likely have issues even if it wasn’t a track bike, and I am handy enough to get intimate with the process, it honestly sounds like a great project to take on. 💜
I daily my drag bike, I won't tell a soul you test rode your track bike ❤ It's a great purchase and you'll get no end of great video content putting it back together
Not used to seeing moto content in my old neighbourhoods, especially the Greenstone back roads. Love it man, Blade fan but always thought the R1s are gorgeous. My 1st bike was a fully built CBR250r and it was used as a track bike, put new R3s to shame. Put thousands of miles before selling it when i moved abroad. Miss the bike life
Quick shifter really only works at high rpm and you need to hold the throttle. Let the software do the work. I’d be more worried about the downshifts. You’re also probably BARELY getting the brakes to temp if you’re not getting on em too hard.
Congrats on getting your dream bike. 🥳 Why don't you keep your race fairings for the street? You can still mount mirrors and lights to it. I use track race fairings on the street and love it. It's so much easier to work on.
Hopefully you love it! I have the 21 and I love it, even if it doesn't love me and reminds me constantly. I've already killed a battery, had to rethread an engine case bolt, had difficulties tuning the bike and almost bricked it, and learned the hard way that integrating the blinkers into the running lights with aftermarket parts makes the bike unable to get super wet without sending my electronics into a fritz. I supposed most people just call that "character".
Hey, the throttle might be the auto warm up OR throttle imput, since the warm up module intercepts the actual throttle imputs. Unless you WANT to bring it to factory shape, you could mix and match to your liking!
I also have 2016 that I purchased during Covid. I bought the bike with 12k miles(19000kms) and I actually turned it into a full race bike. It now has a little over 20k miles (32000kms) on the original motor. I’ve raced almost a full season and the bike still pulls hard on brand new BMW’s and newer R1’s. I run motul 300v 10w-40 l, and I religiously change it since I’m so hard on it. I also only run Yamalube filters. Only failures I’ve had on mine were a stator going out, blew an o ring on a coolant line that comes out of the front of the engine block, and I had to replace my starter gaskets as they ended up failing and some oil was coming out. I also just replaced the entire clutch basket because it started to rattle but I doubt you will have to worry about that since your mileage is so low. If you stay on top of the oil changes I doubt you will have any reliability issues. I would keep an eye on the rubber gaskets since they are getting up there in age, but other than that you should be fine. Especially since it will be a street bike again. Good luck with the new project 👍🏻
Same generation I want next for the r1! Its coming. Beautiful sound, the moment you started her up! 🥵🥵 Can't beat that sound or look! You got a steal bro! Enjoy it and be safe
I'm pretty sure the throttle stopped working because you used the warm up mode while already warm. It intercepted the throttle to warm itself but didn't do anything, but never gave you the throttle back until you "restarted" the bike with the key.
I'm no expert, but i think that the throttle stopped working because you tried to get the bike to warm itself up while it was already warm, and it freaked out.
That’s a great deal! As far as your brake problem. Check with the last owner to see if the put race pads on the bike. Race pads are a no go on the street.
By the way. I bought my dream bike by less than the half of the price (only way to buy it) a 2006 BMW K1200R, I spent 6 months to replace the gearbox and rebuild the entire bike by my self. Thanks for sharing and see you.
I used to have a 2006 K1200R. My first ABS bike. If you live in the US, then BMW will replace the driveshaft for free, as there's a recall on that one.
The exact same thing I helped my friend do with his 2010 R1, went from being abused to loved with new fairings also put on and pretty much the entire machine overhauled with it's fluids, wheels brakes and steering lol
quickshifter probably disables itself when the battery dies, it works like that on my MV. you need to reenable it from the settings menu, check that out!
I'm excited to see the transformation. Although, I'm definitely a fan of the track and not at all a fan of the street anymore. Again, I make the suggestion that you invest in a complete set of leather for riding. The moto specific textile gear you have isn't going to work the way you want it to if you go down.
I bought a gsxr 600 that i suspect was tracked pretty hard. I am not positive but it did require a lot of maintenance. I still have it and at this point have done far too much to list here. If i wouldve known when buying it i wouldve passed. But we all learn. And it has taught me a lot about motorcycle mechanics.
That statement is soo true. Getting use to the power happens soo quickly hence why I didnt bother with anything under 600cc just wouldn't be worth it. So much so I just bought a liter bike as my. First bike and called it a day
would be easier to get a quality wrap for matte/satin looking fairings instead of a full paint job. but if a deep gloss is a priority, paint job is superior.
I'd actually advice you not to revert the suspension. This is already really good and what you need are springs for your weight, potential oil change to skinnier oil and tinkering with compression (and rebound if you change the oil, but either way if you slow it down it'll feel more plush as well) If you assume now that the sag is ok, wind down the compression and keep going down until it's soft enough. You'll probably want the fast speed compression to be almost 0 becuase this is the one that will take on the fast bumps, while the slow speed compression is for when you're breaking
The R1 will always have a special place in my heart and I almost bought it but looking at the tuono now. The color is so sick. Maybe wrap the original fairings in the same color? Subbed and curious to see for the end result.
some track bikes can be better cared for than some street bikes, hopefully the owner knows how to take care of it. I bought a 2013 R6 with 9000 miles that was a track bike its whole life and was raced in motoameria and other club racing but the owner took so much good care of it. I got it as a steal as well and it was taken care of its whole life and was built from the bottom and throughout. It was checked/serviced/built from trusted mechanics and the previous owner all the time. it was abused on the track but was well taken care of off the track and its been going strong still today as I got it a couple years ago. Runs amazing out of all my other street bikes even with its one of the most miles and the oldest in my collection. couldn't be more happier with this track bike
im writing this before watching the whole video, the brakes are track brake pads so if they do not reach tempature your stopping power will be diminished. the bike is beautiful i miss mine so much. take your swing are to get the about an inch drilled back to extend the rear wheel a little to stabilize the bike better. my only complaint on this bike was the short wheel base.
So awesome haha, I enjoyed this one. If I ever got a 1000cc, I've always known it would be the R1. Absolutely beautiful and sound so good. Thanks for sharing!🔥
I think you will want to keep it as it is after a track day, you will also improve your riding skills I am a track rider only! I got tired from the streets after a few months of track riding
Great work on the video. Would I have brought this ex-racer? After a compression test and a check on straightness, absolutely yes, and totally agree on the extra benefit of doing some work on the bike yourself - to make it feel like it's truly yours. Without wanting to be condescending, just offering friendly advice, I'd consider checking the steering dampener (they get a work out on a race bike, and tank slapping is to be avoided at the mere cost of new or refurbished dampener). I would also give plastic welding a shot, before buying new or secondhand pieces to fix the cracked units (you end up with a plastic welding kit for next time, and possibly still a few dollars saved), and give a DIY respray a go (If you don't have the tricks already, there are plenty of really good U-Tubers that will show you everything you need to do, to get a good paintjob - as good as factory anyway and easily better if you put in the prep time, and control dust.) Just in case your not aware of the degree of health risk, if you do decide to spray it yourself, protect your lungs with appropriate respirator, with a good clean shaven seal to your face. Envious of you for sure. A great bike and a worthy project. Well done!
I would have most definitely gotten that bike. Although I am looking for a track bike so I wouldn't worry about going back to the stock/street stuff. But still a definite YYYEEESSS!!!
Im sure you know this already but that MovieStar Rossi bodywork isn't OEM stuff , its Offshore Replica Bodywork. Be cheaper to buy some more offshore bodywork in a colour you like rather than paying to paint that stuff. Cool Project ! Looking forward to seeing how it unfolds
This is worth it Yamaha R1 is a beauty and unique nowadays. If you have one you're lucky because this will be available for race track only bcuz of euro 5 emission. love this R1 ❤
13:53 headshake no Bueno. Headshake could be for a variety of reasons. Could be worn suspension components. Could be gripping the bar is too tight during acceleration etc. could be a lot of things.
My H2 had a Ti SC Project CR-T when I collected it. I picked it up from the dealership, rode 550km in one shot to the ferry home and by the time I got on the boat, I was on eBay buying a banana Akra for it
I don't think I'd take on a track bike conversion, but I have a garage full of bikes that I got really cheap due to questionable cosmetic condition and/or easy to fix issues. All the bikes I own have been bought at 40-60% off the price of an average example & have been cheap & easy to fix. If you have some mechanical knowledge it's the best way to get a bike that you want at a discount price.
This is hilarious! Just a few days ago I found my self in a similar position! 2016 R1, that the previous owner took out for rides every once in a while, and the track a few times. Around 9k miles on the dash as well. The issue is that the engine has a tick! Fortunately for me, after lots of research and listening, I decided to take the gamble and purchase it for 5k USD. My hopes are that with a bit of time and patience in my garage, and a lot of reading manuals and calling friends, I might have just stolen a dream bike!
Common misconception. I changed my oil, brake pads and fork oil before every track day. Cables, brackets, bushings and bearings are checked on half the recommended service interval.
Godam that thing looks good. If only could keep it this way, no plate or anything, but have it not be such a give away that the cops just follow you home after.
Maintenance doesn't really make up for the fact the g forces it was subjected to while going flat out. My biggest question is how long it was a street bike. If you really wanna know where you stand, bore scope your cylinders and get your oil tested
