I’d love to have a project like that. That old V8 is iconic and was fitted to so many vehicles over the years in all states of tune from off-roaders to high performance sports cars. And yet it’s mechanically so simple work on. I’m looking forward to seeing what some care and attention will do for it and hope it turns out to be a great investment. As you mentioned, even if the fuel economy isn’t great it should certainly be cheaper than taking two cars to the market.

I'd guess that maybe it has been through deep water and was hydro locked, hence the renewed part on the alternator and the removed air box? Just a thought but either way it's time to roll them sleeves up my friend and show us how it can be done!

I think that V8 is based on the American Buick/Oldsmobile aluminum block v8 from the early 1960s
