Couple things. Gotta replace the crankcase ventilation valve and plumb correctly plus check the dipstick tube that the lowers hose goes to because they plug up. the disa flap is probably broken as well. The fuel filter has the regulator on it as is also junk. It should have about 5 bar of pressure through the power band.

Or fix the catchcan setup so it doesnt leak. If it has a catch can it probably also has the oil separator removed, and hopefully the dipstick openings are capped off. Also go ahead and put a new water pump,expansion tank and hoses on it so you wont have a random failure.

Over here in the UK I run this as a road car, 09.50 is for the coolant level, it's an easy way to see if you have coolant (ie up) or none (down). Whilst you're replacing the headers look for removing the steering column bush, you gain much more feel from removing. I'd also recommend that you change the rocker cover gasket, old header design means they get brittle from exhaust temps and leak oil onto the headers. However ensure if you do replace you use genuine BMW gaskets, they're much softer than eBay/motor traders and stop the leak. Also get eccentric front wishbone bushes. As mentioned by other commenters e46 rear subframes are terrible. Clutch delay valve, get it out, especially drifting.

I work on those daily if you need any advice. PS the entire crankcase is under vacuum and any leaks, like your blow by test and they don't run right.

If you want it to be somewhat reliable, replace the entire cooling system with aftermarket stuff, including all the little hoses! It's not crazy expensive. The cooling system in these cars is junk. I have a '98 323 converted to race car and I tried to cheap out on that. The car didn't make it through the first session of the first race weekend on the stock stuff.

I love all the support you have for veterans. You just dont see enough support these days so it's always nice to see someone with a big following to show so much support. My bad :( Lol this thing will need a big overhaul. Guaranteed vacuum leaks, Ccv related issues, Needs oem short throw, Fuel filter, Plugs, Needs oem header gaskets, The header probably wont fit, Countless other tricks.

The little red stick in the coolant is to check level, if you don't see it when you open the lid then it's low. If it bounces(as it did) levels are fine, yours is a little low, you can judge it on how high the stick comes up, it should have a full line if it hasn't worn off as many do.

I used to have one of these, they are such good cars man! If you ever decide to make power out of this thing, that motor can take a lot of boost without blowing up. Just make sure you re-enforce the rear floors/subframe before making good power!

Nice E46! Watch out for the oil pump sprocket nut. The M54 has poor harmonics at 6k rpm which causes the nut to back out, thus losing oil pressure.

Rear subframe issues,control arm and bushings,window regulators,valve cover gaskets... the list goes on with stupid little shit. My 330i killed me financially, but it was still a fun car just not practical.

the plastic stick that pops up when you take off the radiator cap is supposed to be there, it is a float and on the stick there are 2 round plastic markers and the bottom one is max level for coolant.

Those things are notorious for having vacuum leaks that cause running issues. On a BMW you would consider everything from the valve cover to the oil pan a vacuum reservior. Need to hook the VC vent to the pcv properly and smoke the intake to check for vacuum leaks. When they have them they will go lean and dump a bunch of fuel to protect.

Check the rear subframe mounts, make sure they aren’t tearing out of the unibody. Also would be a good idea to reinforce them. E36 and E46 are known for this issue.

The red stick in the radiator is a bobber that just tells you when its got enough coolant, upgrade the water pump and thermostat housing to the metal ones they are plastic from the factory and if the exhaust has a butterfly valve unplug the vacuum hose and plug it so its stuck open

He’s a tuner and it’s already got a 3L inline six with forged internals. This motor can make 700whp with stock internals, I don’t really see a point to a 2JZ swap unless you’re lazy.

Couple things: coolant thingy is essentially the coolant dipstick. Ms43 is all opens source so you could easily tune it yourself. Car is probably mad with all your modifications because it runs off of ecu adaptations which tries to variate to achieve target values and you have changed large variables that it's trying to adapt to. Thrash on it and it will get better, that's always been my BMW philosophy :)

It's a Beamer just a Lil heads up...once you go to boost it...you will benefit greatly from indexing the spark plugs.. it won't give a lot of power but the response will benefit.

Nice to see the cars we use in Europe. The problem with these things is the emissions reduction systems that eat up the power. And the ECUs pop error codes and put it in limb mode for any reason if you tamper with them. Looking forward on the development. Cheers from the Netherlands

That floating stick in the expansion tank is for checking the coolant level. Ball on the very top can be level with the top of the threads or next ball can be flush with the threads signifying max level.

the "blowby" isn't shot piston rings the previous owner looks to have replaced the pcv system with a catch can. BMW operate with positive pressure inside the engine so if it isn't maintained with that system will just spray oil like james sprays his 240..

Mid size turbski, fix the clutch, porsche brake swap f+r, cage it, coil overs, sways, hydra hand brake, 4 sparco bucket seats w harnesses, weld the diff, tubular bumpers so you can rip...255 fr 205 rear tires...would make such a fun cheap drift car you can bring your friends in.

If that's an e46, then you should definitely look into reinforcing the rear subframe mounts. Apparently they have a habit of tearing out of the chassis!

You could try blocking the vacuum line that goes to the intake flap, that should keep the runners from opening and could make more HP possibly

I'm down. Nothing wrong with an e46. Besides coolent tank leaks, cracked heads, venos issues, etc. I love inline six power no matter who builds it. You know everyone sells LS swap parts I'm sure.. Thanks again for all you do for our veterans!!!

I wont tell you how to make power but here's some tips on drift specific handling things: Don't forget to pick up some cut knuckles and extended lower control arms for the front so you can gain some extra steering angle and response on the cheap. Im sure you know this as well but drift cars run a lot of negative camber on the front as well because you want the largest contact patch to be at while the car is at lock. Those cars are also notorious for the subframe separating from the car so check that and consider some solid or poly subframe bushings as well. Then just get a handbrake and weld that diff and you're clear to send it. For the handbrake we generally like to run dual calipers but you could do an inline setup for cheaper and it will work fine as long as you don't try to use foot brake and handbrake at the same time

Hey guys. You should try to find a 2001 E38. The car is a beast. I was skeptical about getting a BMW, but that car changed my mind. That car would take curves sideways doing 80+ like it was nothing. I used to race it down gravel roads, It was a blast.

I shared a wrecking yard with a couple of Ford & GM tragics, they've built some crazy cars over a very long time. When they worked on my BMW project ( M3 E46 motor into an old E30, very light), they were blown away. Do the homework first, you can buy all sorts of standard parts from other models simply bolt on. Genuine 168 mph car...Enjoy the chassis balance..Well done !! G'Day from Australia

The float thing is called an expansion tank and that's how you checkl the level of coolant in it

Your probably gonna need to replace the valve cover, they are cheap plastic and warp and leak like crazy onto the headers Also you'll want to reset the adaptive learning. Google INPA. It's a program for reading all the modules. You'll need to buy a special obd2 cable. They are about $20 on Ebay and usually come with a disk that has INPA on it

Look into the rear subframe mounts and the trunk floor!!!!! The crack really bad on those cars. I’ve seen the entire trunk floor rip out between the rear shock tower... better brace it up!!!!!!

That red rod is just a float, it indicates whether or not the reservoir is full.

That engine can handle up to 700 hp with stock internals. Just change the head studs and injectors and fuel rail. Fuel rails likes to crack sometimes. Also get a LSD and NOT A WELDED Diff. Transmission does need some beefing up for that power. Also you have to rev up to 7100 rpm for the full power. The oil leaking could be the VANOS Oil pump is broken

I've read on forums the M54B30 is capable of about 450HP on a stock bottom end, but some have mentioned 500HP+ if it's tuned correctly. I personally would not go more than double the crank's 230HP rating without upgrading the rods, pistons, and the crankshaft.

Can’t wait for the LS swap... On second thought go with the turbo, the motor is actually really strong. If it ever does blow you can swap the engine management, crankshaft, turbo manifold, and connecting rods into an iron block M50 from an e36, and boost it to the moon. Stock transmission and crankshaft should be good for almost 1000hp without issues.

The red stick in the coolant tank is the "dip"stick for coolant level.

It probably would have made more power with the stock induction system and just removing the screen. It has a factory cold air intake and what you replaced it with is sucking hot air out the engine bay.

Start with a vacuum system smoke test then check disa flap in the intake manifold after the plugs all easy checks👍 the exhaust believe u may need to unbolt engine mounts to squeeze it out 🤔 maybe not on a LHD though

Make sure you check the rear subframe bolts. Where it mounts to the chassis. Will crack and tear the sheet metal.

Woot Woot !! Krautmobile, check the rear subframe where it attaches to the body, they are notoriously thin and can crack.. There are kits to repair it but its a lot of work. :-(
