I can't believe I was able to pick up and try this amazing piece of history in the Kodak DCS pro 14n. It was the second ever full-frame camera announced, third to be released, highest megapixel at the time and thousands of dollars cheaper than the Canon 1ds. Ultimately, you know what happened to Kodak digital, but it's just interesting to think what we would have today if they were still around. Because despite some weird battery issues today, this camera is great.

About the voice memo, its a handy feature to sports photography, usually, we are hooked in stadiuns to a FTP protocol, and someone on the press room, is taking care of the imagens, sending to the press agencys, so the voice memo goes along the images for them to help speed the process of IPTC and descriptions

I was given one by Kodak when it was first released to test drive. Image quality was good when the camera would work, by that I mean it would go into a recalibration mode every 5 to 6 minutes to compensate for temperature differences that could effect color, each recalibration took 2-3 minutes. Can you imagine trying to do a family portrait with that kind of delay? At a point about 40 minutes into the portrait session I packed it back into my bag and finished up the day with my D2X. Kodak's rep at the time that I returned it listened intently to every aspect of the shooting experience. He literally took 2 pages of notes on the issues that I had and why I couldn't complete the shoot with it. Never considered it a viable option for events.

I used to shoot with this camera professionally. The “Hailation” is caused by the light bouncing off the shiny magenta censor the of the rear element of the lens. Also this effect can be observed if you shoot with 16 ish mm lens you will actually see a magenta double image of clouds and things with a strong contrast. Try to shoot anything in +85 degree weather. You will get an effect similar to motion blur.

I was a photo assistant in the aughts and worked with Fuji Finepix S2 cameras, and even had a Kodak DCS 300 (something) I saved from the trash. Digital cameras from that time, and before had such a specific look -- like the colors weren't exactly right, the image was a little soft, and your exposure range was razor thin compared to even color pos film. I feel like the next gen of cameras actually made markedly better images so all of these cameras got forgotten very quickly. It's cool to see them used so many years later. I guess my main memory of these cameras was having to work around the limitations of the camera in a still life environment that was previously dominated by large format film. Cameras were always tethered, everything was composited for perfect exposure, and lighting had to be super precise.

Olympus and Panasonic filter stacks are different, whereas Olympus relies more on the lens coatings and Panasonic prefers a stronger filter stack (not to be confused with anti-aliasing). Neither is better, just one of many technical things about cameras and how companies approach the issue. Sometimes using a Panasonic lens on an Olympus body can let in light outside the visible spectrum.

Kodak is like Sears. Both had a leg up in their industry. Kodak COULD have become a leader in digital photography but held onto a archaic idea "We'll make more money selling film" not realizing the industry was changing with or without them. Like Sears and its catalog. All they had to do is put it online EARLY, offer free shipping and it would probably be the Amazon of today. These old American companies who were dominate just did not adapt to the new because they were run by old guys who did not understand the changing world. I wonder what famous thing in our lives today will become obsolete in 20 years because they didn't think Ai would become a thing?

Ok, fine.. I'll finally subscribe instead of just watching all the videos. The SLR/n is still one of my absolute favorite cameras for that film-look. I originally played with it at B&H when it came out. Then I bought when the price when through the floor a year later. If you pair it to the correct lens, it's absolutely amazing. the 105VRI, the original 70-200 f/2.8G, and the 85mm f/1.4D. I think I commented on your dsc whatever review when you mentioned the 14n, but I remember you could pay to upgrade the sensor and buffer to get the 14n to be more like the SLR/n. There is a still a kodak dslr dpreview group that I post on every now and then. As for blooming, there is an italian flag issue with green on one side and magenta on the other side.

one more thing about this very special camera. while i owned it i edited the raw files in camera raw. its color profiles must have been very different than most current digicams. the temperature and tint values were fixed. or to be more accurate, they worked like presets. only a few options. if the light changed a little bit over the limit of one of the presets, it made a huge leap to the next one. the modern software are interpreting the different light situations in an entirely different way. when i worked with dxo the software didn't open the dcr files. niether did darktable at the beginning. now darktable open the dcr files but in a very strange color balance i don't have any idea how to fix. rawtherapee, lightroom and luminar are working best. at the time i downloaded kodak's own software but it didn't open the dcr files either. there something premature about this camera that excites me the most.

Only 0:14 into the video and I already spotted the Fujifilm X-H1 in the back ... ! I hope you enjoy that camera, this is one of my favourite Fujifilm camera bodies to date. Pretty affordable, extremely good sensor, good ergonomics, nice video, fast burst rates, pretty nice lookig, built like a tank and probably still the best EVF I've tried to date. And the IBIS is effective. I replaced it with a Nikon Z6 because it made more sense to me (with my D700 having a pile of F mount glass... sharing lenses was more practical than having two whole lens systems around), but I kept its little brother the X-T2 I simply couldn't let go of that sensor. If I didn't have those Nikon lenses and bodies, the X-H1 would probably have been my main camera for the next 5 years, easy ! It's a beast, and a gem of a camera. Definitely a keeper (and I do regret selling it a little bit) (also is that a D2H or a D2X on the shelf??)

I remember this camera from Kodak, it was also one of the "pioneers" by eliminating the low pass filter, it was quite quirky in operation and very slow. Very capable of achieving good image quality, but what it enjoyed in sharpness, from time to time, it lost it in muare. Regarding the "Frankenstein" camera, there is a peculiarity of the Canon EF mount, and that is that the AF algorithms are compatible with those of Sigma SA, or at least extremely similar in large percentage. I suspect that Canon gave the use of the EF mount to Kodak, in exchange for digital technology for its cameras made "all in house", but did not want to negotiate anymore technology for its bodies. Regarding the cameras in the bags, it's probably Fujilm S-Pro something 😅, S5-pro my Fav. Greetings from Argentina ;)

Love the channel. Possible the halation effect is caused by fungus on the sensor?
@adventureswithrusty2012
@adventureswithrusty2012 4 месяца назад
Great vid! It may be worthwhile deconstructing and rebuilding the battery pack. It will likely have cells that you can match to commercially available NiCads. Regarding the purple fringing, this is NOT chromatic aberration as a result of the lens/sensor combination, but a saturation phenomenon in the sensor, also known as “blooming”. This is caused by the overflow of electrons from highly saturated pixel sites to nearby unsaturated sites. The reason it’s purple is that most sensors are most sensitive to green, so the uncorrected (raw) output has a strong greenish cast (the compliment of purple). Automatic in camera color-correction makes the image neutral by boosting the red and blue = purple components. Hence the overflow from saturated pixels takes on a purple cast. Modern sensors have more control over blooming so what's typically left is chromatic aberration when color fringing is seen, and is another topic entirely.
@williamcurwen7428
@williamcurwen7428 4 месяца назад
Hi, the first thing I noticed about your pictures from this camera is the magenta shadows and red highlights. This is more than likely due to a rather weak IR/UV cut filter covering the front of the sensor. Any stronger and it would eat into the camera’s base ISO performance. Consider it a desirable attribute! I have the same issue on my Olympus E1’s Kodak CCD sensor, and is one of many attributes that makes it so special.
@jackthoreson
@jackthoreson 4 месяца назад
Yes! I remember watching an old dpreview or camera store video where they shot with an old Kodak frankencamera like this one. They mentioned those halation like artifacts and color issues due to no ir filter and maybe no bayer filter too? Either way I love seeing these now historic pieces of tech!
@williamcurwen7428
@williamcurwen7428 4 месяца назад
@@jackthoreson As historic pieces of tech, these older cameras from the 00’s were quickly abandoned for the next best thing before anyone really knew what to do with them. I have found CCD and very early CMOS cameras handle halation filters like the Tiffen black pro mist and glimmer-glass series very differently, especially if coupled with low contrast vintage glass. The state of the art then is very different to the state of the art now.
@tyoberg
@tyoberg 4 месяца назад
I had a DCS420c which didn’t have a sensor filter (neither anti-aliasing nor hot mirror (ir)). You put a hot mirror on the lens or you’d get a harsh magenta cast in sunlight. With the hot mirror, you’d get those mild pink flares but much larger. I in this case it’s reflections from the hot mirror at the sensor. That camera was insanely sharp, but very quirky and ridiculous to wield.

@@perli216 if all you're changing is ISO, yeah, it'd just get darker. For the same amount of light, a faster aperture and/or longer exposure would compensate for that to get the same amount of light to the sensor. These cameras had their low ISO modes (6, 12, 25, and 50 ISO) coupled with long exposure times (example, ISO 12 has 8, 15, 30, and 60 second options), so you could get clean low-noise shots out of it. Useful for things like interiors, art digitization, or studio product photography. If you're adventurous you can probably also use it for outdoor shots (waterfalls, beaches, etc) where you'd typically use an ND filter.

@@snappiness I didn't realize that the monochrome version is rare. Back then most newspaper printing was black and white, so it seemed normal. The monochrome version is also preferable because it does ISO 800, while the color maxed at 400 ISO. Has a HDD that stores up to 50-ish photographs, which seemed like a lot compared to a roll of 36 film. It was frustrating however, because you couldn't keep shooting by dropping in another roll, like a film camera could, and the only way to delete a photo to make room was to delete the last photo. Has a little hole where you stick a ball-point pen to delete. But no rear monitor to see what you are doing. Since we were coming from film where you can't delete at all, that limited delete function was considered brilliant, and sometimes a life saver. There were two more monochrome versions, a cheaper one with no HDD, and a more expensive one that did infra-red. I expect that one would be very rare. One of the good things is it uses AA batteries. Lots of them., but it means that if I dropped some batteries in it now there is a high probability that it will work. I haven't used it in more than 20 years, but it was in good working condition when I last used it.

@@KevinJanesch You got me there. I don't really remember all the details. Macintosh was flaky with connections, and they used to have both PC and Macintosh in the office. We switched to Quark at some point, and I am not sure when that went to Windows, so we had to have images on Macintosh, but I don't remember how we got images from camera other than remembering that the Apple SCSI connections giving problems. I think they had some sort of non standard interface that didn't work well. I am pretty sure that we had to use cables made by Kodak for it to work. SCSI was notorious for companies not standardizing the connectors and maybe Kodak made connectors that were made to talk to both the camera and the Macintosh port. @@artistjoh That's still helpful, I really appreciate the reply! As much as I'm getting into these early cameras it still doesn't often hit that that time was also pretty early in the days of computers handling images, period. It's super cool you got to see that, and wild how piecemeal it sounds like your workflow was to start. Odd that the Macintoshes were so picky, especially since the hobbyist scene seems pretty lively and they had SCSI natively for so long. I've been leaning Macintosh as it's more integrated, but I think at this point I should just bite the bullet on *something* to try to get them up and going. Used SCSI PCI cards are cheap these days. I did get an assortment of SCSI cables (and some mixed 3.5/5.25" floppies, manuals, and other goodies) with the cameras so I'm very interested to see how they have held up! Haha did you know there were a few lenses where the dcs 14n's chin actually prevents it from being mounted? I remember when I had this. I think it was a nikon ultra wide or a f2.8 zoom but the chin made mounting impossible!

This camera provides unique color tone with its built-in flash, which is sort of like film way better than Canon 5D or any CCD I experienced before.

Apparently the "halation" effect isn't just on 14n. In Kristoffer Trolle's DCS Pro Back review, I see the same effect on two photos. Really curious what that is. BTW does your DCS 760 show any "halation"?

Kodak what a crazy company. Growing up with them. Also competing with them when I was at Xerox. I kept saying sure Kodak was in trouble even back then. Xerox turned out just as poorly by the way. I dig these artifacts of time long gone. Do I want one as a paper weight? Maybe, but a Nikon F, or a old Canon A1 or something. The Kodak DCS unless I got it for free almost, maybe. But otherwise what a mess Kodak was in. Film and Office solutions were their thing. Like anything else, Kodak had their time. I am okay with that. Nothing is forever. Besides, the memories with the film growing up along with the frustration they have, but yeah. To be forever young.

I own Kodak DCS Pro SLR/n for 14 years and recently found the IR cut filter on sensor was broken due to life end…The battery inside can be replaced by special model from China, our local battery expert help me to replace it. The filter can also be replaced but cost a lot,I am considering to fix it or not…

Great work! Was your daughter's photo from 2:56 taken with a nikkor 50mm 1.8? The bokeh resembles my pancake 50mm 1.8 (japan version) which is my favourite lens ever. It even beats Pentax 43mm limited in my books and I own both of them. I also highly recommend Canon 50mm 1.8 LTM. It has more leica glow to it than leica lenses themselves. Cheers!

whoa that halation at 6:12 is very film like, I'm not even sure how that happens on a digital sensor? Splashing off the IR filter or something?
@bundo13
@bundo13 4 месяца назад
Oh, I should have kept watching haha. The only thing I can think of is if there's an IR filter in front of the sensor and it's getting an internal reflection or something?

@NormanF62
@NormanF62 4 месяца назад
If you mean they’re made in Germany, no. You’re buying a Kodak, Samsung or Practika camera for the historical prestige of the lens and not where they made. In Germany, they stopped all lens production at the end of the 1980s.

This camera had particularly noticeable noise reduction, even at 400 iso. It looks like someone took a painter's palette knife and made little short smears of all the detail in the picture. It was one of the more affordable digital cameras in its day, but that smearing of detail ruled it out for me.

Love the P880, I have 2 and paid £20 and £22 for them ! they are genuinely 100% still good cameras today, I use mine often and get great results with that 24-140 manual zoom lens, the sensor produces a special look that everybody likes and the lens is sharp, it is also a great size and a nice looking camera, I think still my all time favourite

How much processing did you do on the photos? Or do they look like that right out of camera? Because I find the colors really reminiscent of Kodak film like Gold and Portra, with this warm, golden hue especially on the skin. Kodak had the color science down, like Fujifilm... Shame they had little talent for designing hardware so the camera manufacturers easily beat them there. Fuji managed to catch up, Kodak didn't.

Most of the images have at least some sort of exposure touch ups and some definitely were warmed up in post. I didn't do any other color adjustments though as far as adjusting particular channels.

Working in the camera industry during this time was so exciting. It was the birth of the digital revolution and every few months camera companies would release something new that pushed the boundaries of what the tech could do. I remember the first time I saw a Kodak/nikon mashup and it blew me away. Great video!
