On today's #cameraclassics we are rewinding time to Kodak's 2002 flagship DSLR! It's old, hard to use, and evanescent to say the least.
The camera interests me for a number of reasons, from the myriad of "what ifs" that an old anchor camera company such as Kodak continued on with refining a professional lineup, to it's 14 megapixel full frame sensor.
It's taken some time to get this video off the ground, mainly because it's a stubborn camera to use haha. Regardless, thank you for watching.

This camera is so incredibly rare and impractical today but it is so unique and such a fun design. Really cool that you were able to find one. As of this moment, it's rare enough that only one is on sale on E-Bay that I can find and they want $750 for it...

Also unrelated to gear talk: The North Shore is such a gorgeous place; I really need to make it back up there sometime :)

Looks like this was shot on DJI osmo at maximum tracking speed. A full 35mm film sized digital sensor was the dream in the old days, at any cost. Anything was faster than photomat.

It was the pocket unfortunately lol! I should've used a slower tracking speed for sure. I still think this is one of my favorite sensors in any camera I've used

Awesome review! My first digital was a Kodak back in 2000. I moved on to a DSLR in 2007 or so. I seen DCS Pro on Ebay always wondered about them. I completely understand and enjoy using older cameras. Sometimes you get amazing results that can not be replicated on new cameras. Kodaks colours tend to be a bit more saturated, but I love that reversal film look. Looking forward to seeing more and thank for sharing your photography journey!

Just a couple of points. The body is based on Nikon and part made by them. It was exported to Rochester NY where it was adapted for digital. The 14n was the original which could be later upgraded with a revised sensor giving better performance. The upgraded camera was designated nx so your nx body is the fully upgraded version. Later the same body was used for the Pro SLRn and lastly came the Pro SLRc which had a different body manufactured by Sigma. The camera was a first in that the firmware could be upgraded online. What killed the camera was that it was in competition with the Canon 1 DS mk1 Which although much more expensive was fa far more complete camera design. The 1DS Mk 2 then exceeded the Kodak's Megapixel count. Its fate was sealed when Nikon started selling their own Pro level DSLRs which although of lower pixel count and having APS sensors could deliver better quality with better ergonomics. Bad points of the camera were as you state Battery life (I usually carried 3 spares each outing) Poor ISO performance (I found 400 inadequate) and the start-up time. Also the shutter was clunky, moire was always a threat and the Jpegs were awful! Good points were the high resolution - better than one would expect from 13.9 MP, stunning colour which still compares well today and it's RAW integration into Kodak's Photodesk post processing. Mine gave me four years of faithful service but now languishes in an upstairs drawer.

An excellent review. Back in the day, this camera was highly sought after by professionals, and from a practical point of view they were hopeless to use. But everyone said the same thing, when you got it right, the colour was wonderful. I have both an Olympus E1 and an E500 cameras that have Kodak CCD sensors, and the CFA on what is a considerably smaller 4/3 sized sensor was tuned to a Kodachrome aesthetic that really does look fantastic. Very little dynamic range, but when everything is lined up they are amazing to work with. You are extremely lucky to get what you have at such a low price.

I'd never heard of this camera until now... thanks for the review. The ice cream put in the microwave and then refrozen analogy is perhaps the best description of a camera body i've ever heard 😂

I used the 14n then 14nx for about three years. Great colour and sharpness. Awful body, a cheap Nikon N80 I think but I needed full frame for various reasons. I had the dcs 760 before that which was based on a Nikon F5, and quite good in terms of handling and file quality. I had to move on after running up 50000 clicks on the 14nx shutter and moved to a Canon 1ds2, there wasn't a Nikon full frame option at the time. I could still be using the Canon in 2023 and occasionally get it out to shoot. It's good but the 14n and dcs 760 colour was much better and easier to work with. I think Kodak really had colour sorted out really well and it was the same later when I used Hasselblad Kodak CCD chipped medium format cameras.

Sorry for the late reply! For this video, I used: The tamron 28-75 f2.8 (pretty darn cheap lens right now with great image quality) And the Tokina 19-35 AF (also a super cheap lens right now) Hope that helps!

i have a dcs pro slr, and i think that model may have sped things up over your slightly older 14n. i looove the colors and find the ccd very sharp. but it has actually CRASHED on me several times! shows what a weird and sometimes dysfunctional meld of computer and camera it was.

I order this camera on Ebay, as when it arrived that it did not came with charger, and battery, so I bought 2 batteries, BUT I try finding a Charger, Try Finding a Charger???, So the camera was not worth having that I had to send it back to the seller, and got my refund, Yea, and so was kinda bum out, But I realize that I could do better. So I decided to get Film Cameras from Germany with Carl Zeiss Jena Lenses and was very much please, But after seeing that I needed something to use these lenses on a digital, so I got myself a Nikon D3, and I am happy that with Carl Zeiss Jena Lenses as I do see the difference in the Sharpness, and Clarity, and contrast, and that Why should I be getting New Nikkor lenses that cost an Arm, and Leg in which the lenses that I Obtained with using adapters makes shooting images Better.... So Have fun using your 14n Pro
