Drove a non intercooled 89 w250 for quite some time with an auto, for being stock it had quite a bit of power and would start down to minus 25 not plugged in here in Montana when at work. Even though it had only one battery i think the VE pump starts better than the P pump. Rode crazy rough and when I upgraded to a 98 12 valve i didnt look back. Now I somewhat miss it, but mainly just for the style, not the ride, steering, bench seat, loud cab, etc. I have drove every generation of Dodge Cummins including various 3rd gens and my preference is for the 03 or early 04 high output trucks.
"Steering is not completely all over the place" as the wheel is cocked all the way to the right but going straight. 🤣 Love this truck, congrats on finding it. Looking forward to following the project.
I already have a W250, but that feeling of picking it up and driving the "new to you" 1st gen is something that is truly special. I would like to get another 2 or 3 to be honest. :D
I say leave it alone and run it as a true worker. Update the interior but run the faded clear coat. Life is too short to have a perfect truck every time.
"Hey now, ya young whipper snapper!! That's not a 'Grandpa Truck'!! Why, I daily drive one myself!!" (*Sudden realization that my oldest son is 33, and has 3 kids of his own*) DANGIT!! On another note: I'd like to know if the suspension is stock, AND, what sized tires are those, because his truck seems to sit a bit higher than mine.
Hahaha yeah it sneaks up on you! Fun story, the previous owner actually asked if I would continue the project grandpa truck name, since that’s what he called it! It’s on a 4” front lift with stock rear height and 35” tires, but that front lift will be coming off since it’s a little janky haha
Honestly man it looks perfect as is. Painting it would take it from nostalgia to show truck. Anybody can restore a car with enough money but not everyone has something that's weathered 30 years and held up! Just my .02. Excited for another build
MAN I’d love to see you just clear over the current paint job and rock the classic look 🤌🏽 The shell is sweet too, to each their own! I’m sure it’ll be an elegant/cool build either way 👍🏽
I had a 1st gen. 1990. Everything around the truck fell apart, other than the engine and transmission. The killer was the vacuum pump that was gear driven. Once it failed, it was really expensive to fix. And with no intercooler... I let it go.
My dads truck is a 92 w250 le with mid 70k miles(odometer is stuck) and a broken off muffler but its a farm truck so its quite beat up. Someday id like to fix it up.
Good to know, I'd like to keep almost everything stock besides powertrain. For the engine I want to see what hp and efficiency I can get out of abt stock fuel.
I’m glad other people have a heart for these, personally I don’t. Neat trucks but no connection with them other than the Cummins engine. 2nd gen for life, brittle plastic and all 😂
Cant wait to see this series The tan is awesome but two tone with all the trim and a pinstripe is a great look considering the d350 is solid white already
Leave the paint and put Vice Grip Garage's coating on it or keep the original OEM color or the two tone. I'd hate to change it and instead restore it to OEM.
This is so cool, sold my car to get into older trucks. Found a pretty clean 94 c1500 for $900! Starting off with that & hopefully get into a 2nd gen Cummins in the future
You going to do any power mods? I know you're not a smoke show guy and I would love to see a mild 300hp or so 12 valve that doesn't billow clouds of smoke. I trying to start a fabrication business and would love to have one of these 1st gens for a company truck but would like a little more power you know?
I am sorry, but Drew or whomever it was that bought this from the old guy, are just as bad as the shop that screwed the old guy for pads. That is just seeing a 'mark' in trouble, and taking advantage. Anyways, that was just my take...beautiful truck!
Non adjustable drag link. Can’t straighten that wheel. I recommend doing a crossover conversion from either northwest fab or far from stock. Made a huge difference on my truck
shoot im looking for a second gen manual roller for my 97 12v if anyone has one for sale... first drive with mine was something short of exciting, it needed a lot of work but once i got it drive-able i took it everywhere, we ever bought a 32ft bigtex to make a few haul loads for my pops company.
i dunno man, the whole reason i clicked this random thumbnail is because of the top. it's your rig but leaving the period correct stuff and having it look like an suv makes it stand out
Hey man, you have some of the best videos on these kinds of diesels out there, and your cinematography is incredible. With that said, I do wish you would include more audio clips. For me and many others the sound of these old machines are a big piece of their experience. Thanks, God bless.
Why does everyone call a dodge a "cummins" i hate when people head into our local parts store and go "need tie rods for a 09 cummins" cummins is a motor not a cassis
I HAVE HAD MINE FOR 15 YEARS JUST HITTING 88K FOR HER 30TH BIRTHDAY SHE HAD HER TRANNY REPLACED WITH A CAC 6 SPEED ALLISON AND A BD EXHAUST BRAKE, HVLP FUEL PUMP A DOUBLE DEEP IC W/ 3 INCH ALUMINUM PIPING, SHE STILL SINGING SHE SO HAPPY. LOVE ME SOME CAC! 100 HP INJECTORS AND A HOT RODDED TURBO FROM AUSTIN AT AMERICAN TURBO LAB ARE UP NEXT
just bought my first, first gen Cummins 1992 D250 from the original owner also a grandpa truck. wanted a W250 but compromised as this one was down the road from my house sitting for 9 years. Great trucks.
My paps 93. Had left side brake pad problems. Always we’re falling out. He fixed it the old fashioned way. Welded a rod on the caliper to hold the pads in.
The timing of this is wild to me! I JUST listened last weekend to your interview on the Dodge Pod from 2021 where you talked about getting another 1st Gen eventually to daily. As for the paint, if you want ro restore it go original. If you want something different and fun go with one of the newer Mopar colors like Destroyer Gray, Plum Crazy, or Maximum Steel. Congratulations! Please stay on top of this build series and push out as much content as possible!
My uncle had a 1st Gen. just like this one "without the snugg-top". He used it in the Logging business so he beat the crap out of it. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
