A little life is a complicated book in my opinion because it does show the horrors of trauma and assault but it also overdoes it. It’s a book you’ll either cry at reading or literally not care by the end. Some of the plot points and characters genuinely don’t make any sense and SOME (don’t want to say who for spoilers) are so unprofessional that they should’ve been fired. The book’s writing is really good but I feel like it got very lazy towards the end. It also just got to the point when you could tell how the book ends well before the end. By the end of the book I really stopped caring about the characters and the situation because honestly the plot was lacking in real sustenance other than just abuse and violence, most of the characters are either unlike able or annoying (apart from 3), some of the most responsible and sane characters would at points just stop being logical because you could tell it was to drive another plot point of just pain and suffering through violence and abuse, there was a love arch in the book that did not feel natural at all (between the protagonist and the deuteragonist) but obviously (which once you get into the rhythm of the book) it was to push another painful (and possibly the worst and most lacking) painful arc in the book. In my opinion the book came across as trauma porn more so than anything and I felt bad for the protagonist, not because of everything he goes through but also having been written like that. Just to add the characters feel like they don’t grow, like none of them. They all come across as they age that they are at the beginning of the book even though the book covers almost 30 years of their lives. Two of the main friends are either in the book for 5 mins and a twat for no other reason than having a superiority complex. So either go into this book preparing to cry and love it or go in prepared to stop caring because it really is overdone in terms of violence and abuse. People’s lives can be hard and awful, but this felt cruel and as though the author was writing for pain more so than wanting to bring something important across. This is just my opinion though. I also didn’t want to spoil anything out of respect.
