I think it’s really great that you’re teaching your daughter how to do these things on her own and she does not rely on the shop or a boyfriend or whatever to do these things one father to another I applaud you
Love the videos on this LR3. Especially since you make it clear that you're not a mechanic. I think knowing that gives the "everyday person" the confidence to say "hey, I could do that". Also, showing each step is a huge help. I own a 2006 Range Rover Sport which is built on the same Chassis and Drivetrain as the LR3. My RRS has 194K miles, 105K which I put on it in the last 6 years. I live in northern Indiana so working in mine is a bit more challenging with rusted/seized bolts, but it is a great vehicle.
Love mine ..2006 bought w 115,000 miles. Not one thing wrong w it. They had the air suspension switched to coils paid 7000 only issue was a mass air flow sensor bought it put it on now works even better. Thanks for the vids
Oh wow....a week after we bought our 2005 LR3 I stumbled on your series of videos. "The Beast" (named by Mrs. P) has 207000 well maintained miles, but like most 15 to 20 year old vehicles there are some things that need work, mostly cosmetic. I'll be working on it over the next few weeks, provided it doesn't get too hot and humid under the carport here in Central Florida. Looking forward to viewing all the videos. Cheers
Congrats on your buy. We also have a 2006 LR3 V8 HSE. It has spent its life in a heated and cooled garage, so is in pretty great condition. Love this vintage of Rover. Look forward to following you.
Thank you for all the detailed notes. I also appreciate your daughter's involvement too. Everyone needs to know how to work on cars since it is one of the primary purchases in life that can greatly impact anyone financially, both cost wise and making money as a side hustle along with flipping houses. ;))
Hey Mike, I just watched your video about the TCM rest. Great you joined the Disco3 owners club. hahaha. I just subscribed and am checking what else you have done. Nice work all in all… I am sure there will be a lot to do, Sunroof drain clogging (or preventive cleaning) …. amongst others. Congrats!
Wow great video! I’d say you got a really good deal on this LR3. What a fun daddy daughter project as well. And super great idea using the diapers to keep from any messes. I wonder why nobody else is doing this? I know I will be from now on! Can’t wait to see all the projects on this Land Rover. Liked and subscribed!
I always wanted to have one and am planning to get a 2007 Land Rover discovery 3 tdv6 HSE as soon as possible, thank you very much I wish you the best.
Cool video...I am in NW Vegas... My wife bought a 07 LR3 V8 about two years ago. I have been doing all the work to it. I have learned quite a bit, I also have a LR# for spare parts. Have any questions hit me up. All the best, Josh
I am sure it has been pointed out, but that is now how ya clean a MAF sensor like that. You cleaned the air intake temperature portion, but up inside the tube is the MAF portion. Two small wires that need to be well cleaned.
I just bought a 2006 LR3 V6 115k for 2.5 k. I really can't afford to put it in the shop either so I'm watching this before I change my air filter & clean my mass air flow sensor & throttle body .But I don't have a torque wrench so better go get one . Great video by the way !! 👍 To you & your daughter !
Hi Mike, I'm enjoying your videos and can see the methods you adopt. I see your choice of oil in terms of oil change and can, "understand" your decision to stay with the Castrol 5W 30 oil. I live in Africa very close to the equator and for a time, also in South Africa (SA). Here due to the much higher ambient temperatures, similar to what you can achieve in Vegas, many of us run a 5w 40 oil in the LR3 diesels, in my LR3 (D3) Petrol V8, I actually run a minimum of 5W 50 oil. The reason for this is that I run a CTEK Battery sense under the Bonnet (hood as you Americans call it) and in the very hot days, similar to Vegas and being stuck in traffic for long periods of time. I have seen under the Bonnet temperatures of 90 to 95 deg C (194 Deg F / 203 Deg F). This would mean, despite the V8's incredible cooling ability, the engine oil can get very hot and the considered opinion is that a 5W 30 oil is not enough, but, is, generally adequate in Northern Europe. Its interesting, that since changing to a Fully Synthetic 5W 50 oil (Mobile 1 or Liqui Moly), not only does the engine run cooler, its actually better on fuel consumption. Secondly, in SA, many Land Rover Dealers actually will on the LR3 and LR4 put in the diesels a minimum of 5W 40 and the V8 's 5W 50. Also, I have it on very good authority from a very senior technical member of staff at Land Rover, that changing to a 5W 40 (diesel owners) and 5W 50 (petrol V8 owners) is actually a good thing to do. I actually carried out a test whereby, I set in place a temporary oil pressure gauge and checked the oil pressure at idle using the Land Rover recommended Castrol 5W 30 oil when the engine is very hot. At idle, (taking into consideration, there is nothing wrong with my engine bearings, oil pump etc., I saw about 0.8 bar (this was with brand new oil and a Land Rover Oil Filter). I then drained the oil, flushed and installed Liqui Moly fully synthetic 5W 50 oil and again got the engine really hot. In the same conditions as when running the Castrol oil, the oil pressure was 1.6 bar. That is a huge difference!! Anyways, just a bit of information for you to consider. Also, if you have not already done so, consider installing a new set of iridium NGK spark plugs. You will notice the difference. Have fun and enjoy a marvelous car/truck.
Thank you so much for the advice. Our climate here in Las Vegas is nothing like Northern Europe so I will definitely try the 5W-50 on our next oil change. I also plan to change the spark plugs and ignition coils soon. Any recommendations on brand for the coils?
@@wafflesquare Stay with Denso coils, there is a good reason Land Rover went with them. But NGK Iridium are the best plugs for that engine. Also, the big thermostat housing under the throttle body. They become brittle over time and the mileage your car has done would say, unless it has been changed, it's time to get it done. Finally, the plastic 'Y', 'T' pieces etc. are a plastic/nylon composite, they become brittle and leak at the most inconvenient times. Go to Home Depot or similar and you can get brass, copper ones. I had all stainless steel ones made for me, especially the big 'T' piece to the left of the water pump. If you change all of these, that engine is pretty much bullet proof.
Good luck, I've had a 2006 for several years and I am constantly working on it, on a side note I think you should have pink coolant in there and not green. And my coolant leaks ended up being broken hoses toaken hoses that were cracked in the bends so it was hard to find
Glad I ran into your channel. I am thinking of buying a LR3 also with "bad transmission". My request: can you clarify if you fixed the emissions issue? Also can you add Cost numbers to fix and time taken to fix during your conclusion.
@@wafflesquare Think of laying out your video's like an interview. Which is what essentially your doing to gain viewers. Use the STAR (and add an L = learn at the end. what did you learn?) method to layout your information. Good channel, your doing great. Haters will hate and keep going.
Video idea for you. Add the clock onto the instrument panel using the Gap tool. No one has done a RU-vid video on it. Page 165 in the IID Tool user guide
I just had a bad issue with the pcv valve, I think it ruptured during a long trip and was dumping engine oil into the intake manifold, puddles of it, it first showed up as low power but then on a slope it turned into a huge cloud of smoke as raw oil was dumped into a combustion chamber, anyway plug all hoses to the intake and forget about it
@@wafflesquare you have some work to map out with your LR3. I saw Waldo replace brake lines etc on his LR3. It seems like one would have to be excellent with tools to own a Range Rover.
Yes I definitely have a list of things to fix. Thankfully, this LR3 has never left Las Vegas (based on its service records). Therefore there is no corrosion anywhere on the vehicle or underneath. Unlike Waldo’s LR3, this one has suffered paint oxidation rather than rust/corrosion.
@@wafflesquare I’ve been looking at gx470 for months and passed after checking out maybe a dozen for around 9k. They are so overpriced I don’t care if they are reliable, you are paying for the no repairs upfront lol.
Hi Mike. Thanks so much for obsessing over all these things for us. Your channel has been fun and informative to watch. I’m looking at picking up a similar car from a private seller this weekend (similar…same car, just a 2005 instead, haha). I wanted to hold off on getting the GAP Tool OBD reader, as it’s expensive, until I had the car in hand. Did you find that the BlueDriver (an OBD I already have), gave you a fair bit of information when you picked it up from the seller? I know the GAP Tool is going to be specific to the Land Rover, do way more for you, and that probably will be the way I’ll go if I actually purchase the car, but I’m wondering if the BlueDriver will give me a good sense of “how much work will be” and at least the macro issues of the car from my initial check of the vehicle I’ll be looking at this weekend. Thanks again.
Hi Mike I’m in the Dominican Republic and thanks to ur videos I was able to fix a lot of issues in my lr3 v6 diesel European version I’m now having issues with my Transmision , looking for we’re to see how u fix the Transmition on yours not able to find that video yeah thanks for everything
Hi Mike, well done, it seems to me you cooling system is missing the Air Coolant bleed valve on top of the cooling system. I could see that it has been replace with a piece of metal, which a lot of people do, due to the valve being plastic and in time gets bad - but for bleeding its a good idea to have it. mine failed too and here is the video to fix it and it less than 20 usd from amazon : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hG4K9KSJ_Ec.html enjoy and good luck with the Landy, its fun, she will love it, just requires a little TLC most of the time :) best regards, and drive safely Rene
I explain and fix the issue in episode four: Land Rover LR3 Air Suspension Diagnosis - Ep. 4 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z-Hl_97aK8E.html
@@wafflesquare but that looked black : ( That back lift gate actuator is a part that is common to fail ours has been replaced twice over 214,000 miles and the only way to open it once it fails is to from the inside pry the carpet open. The owner not doing that job shows lack of wanting to put modest $ into that repair. The two parts required from Atlantic British are $159- $179. There are some regular things to be done the original control arms were not strong enough for the great weight of this car. We changed them then changed them again then again but these last ones were with upgraded bearings and those have been in there a long time . The proper parts well priced can be had from Atlantic British. Switching to springs from air ride is a real down grade and a mistake if that crosses anyone's mind. The parts for the air ride from AB are reasonable and long life ..good luck
Saludos desde Cossta Rica, I have rrsport 2006, they changed the transparent hydraulic steering oil, its maneuver seems a little harder to me, before I had one like red color, I could use atf for the steering? Thancks
I just bought a 2007 land rover hse at copart 1100 with 160,000 on mileage copart said did not run or drive , once i got only crank but not start i bought new battery , put in premium gas , sprayed starting fluid, car started but ran rough , i checked oil nothing on stick and had water in no antifreeze, and transmission slips , i bought about 3k in parts from alantic british/ rover parts , rover over heated so i bought hose kit replace all hose , but i heard a clanking noise feom feont engine i has hoping it was not the timing chains , turn out to be broke water pump , and i replaced thermostat, now radiator is bad broke tube on small hose , i found red transmission fluid in boot of rover this told someone put in wrong transmission fluid a big no no , and the new design for transmission pan now metal with separate transmission filter easy replacement take hack saw blade to cut off tube and install new metal pand and filter much eaiser than plastic pan with built in filter, i also put in oil flush before i changed oil and filter , land rover must used correct fluids or they will run bad , i bought black rhino arsenal rims black and 275x65x18 Mickey Thompson all terrain tires and Johnson rods a must if you want a lifted rover to sit at offroad height but will go to super extended height when to click to offroad height with Johnson rods, i also bougt lucky eight rock sliders , a frount runner roof rack many of the products are on people youtube channel to see how the look and work b4 you buy , i am building a overlanding rover , i also watch LR TIME channel he and wife do lots of mechanical repairs, also driver seat need replaced, i also have built in cooler in console mine don't cool very good , also my dash cracked , mine is white good paint i did have some paint on rear doors that i used rubbing compound to bring back the color i also bought all new air bags because these are the original one i bout arnott brand , my heat don't work i will replace heater core , there a mucher way to replace than taking dash apart on one guy viedo just keep heater core tube in place just replace core itself the tube unplug feom core just replace core save time much faster if you run into this problem, Please note you will end up replace all antifreeze hoses mine was in horrible shape , i also replaced all plugs and coils and ebc brakes and pad too wow i forgot all controls arms my rover is a keeper thats why i spent the money i only paid 1100 for it good luck on your rover journey lots of parts out here to bring her back to oem
A friend of mine bought one of those like two years ago and got it for like 6000 really nice truck clean everything and this is like before they start talking about everything especially trucks and SUVs we’re going to skyrocket because of this electric car staying plus everything economy everything she let her husband take it to this local shop and I’ve been told her I said those guys are getting you they would tell her husband they would make up things and he would be like OK just do it just do it and she would tell me what they were doing and my brother owns a shop a big auto shop so like I know the little games mechanics play and how they lie is a tow truck coming also but they literally had to truck there for like a month because he was supposed to be fixing something and then he said there was a bunch other stuff wrong with it and then he’s not gonna charge you for storage and he just was fed up just keep it just keep it I said he seeing how your husband carried his self about when he got things worked on when he would just go there and just be like all just do it just do it I don’t care and he knew he would do that so that’s why he carried you guys like that I didn’t even know until afterwards I said I’ve been telling you stop going to that person I said you don’t never listen to me
@@wafflesquare Seems like there's a fascinating story there but I think it will take more than a few periods for me to make heads or tails of it talk about run on sentences how ya like me now? No periods!
