Is a super cheap mechanical keyboard too good to me true? In this video, I'll show you how I modified the cheapest mechanical keyboard I could find on Amazon without breaking the bank. This video will feature a keyboard unboxing followed by replacing the switches. I will also be performing the tape mod and adding foam to the keyboard case to improve the sound. Hopefully this video will be useful to students, gamers or typing professionals interested in upgrading their typing experience on a budget.

Solid keyboard honestly. I have my fair share of expensive keyboards (self built too) and considering the price gap, this really ain't half bad, especially if the PCB doesn't suffer from ghosting.

Interestingly enough, you could have soldered millmax sockets onto this board to turn it into a hotswap build! Nice project tho. 😄

Actually insane how cheap this keyboard is. I'm actually rather impressed how nice it is even just out of the box. Really goes to show how far we've come with keyboards and cheap parts.

Bought one of these for cheap and don't mind it for the occasional use with Steam Link or something. The "M" key sometimes has an issue registering on mine and takes a little extra force to actuate. I haven't thought about modding it but maybe I'll try it out

Of course you didn't include the cost of that solder sucker tool! Yes, one could use a cheap solder sucker instead of the electric vacuum tool, but it would take a lot longer, and you would run the risk of damaging the PCB. I'd probably just keep the clicky switches as I kinda like the sound they make, but you did remove the hollow sound by filling the keyboard with foam. I have no idea what the tape mod does, or how it does it, but cheaper tape can be had from HFC.

Hey MML, i live close to the beach and its really dusty in here :/ Regular switches start failling in 6 months or so. Do you have any indications of cheap dust proof switches ?

Otemu makes switches that are supposed to be dust proof. I'm not sure if they are really 100% dust proof. But they are some of the cheapest switches available. So even if they eventually fail, they will be cheap to replace. amzn.to/3MSvuHc

You could also consider Kailh Box switches, specifically the V1 Red, White, and Brown. They’re cheap but not bottom barrel cheap. They house they’re contact leafs an compartment within the housing.

the tape/foam mod, with the replacement switches, is really an apples to oranges comparison when compared to the original blue switches. You should have done the sound comparison before you replaced the switches, just so we can get a sense of what difference the tape/foam mod ACTUALLY makes. Comparing before and after the way you did it, was arbitrary at best.

You spent most of the budget to switches. At this budget buying a red/brown switch 40$ keyboard will give you much more features like hot-swap, 2.4ghz connection, argb, different layout options. 9 dolars for mech. keyboard is so good to use with own switches but spending 30 dolars for switches not justifiable.

He literally makes his own keyboards from scratch. Literally like making his own pcb and programming it. This is just a fun project for him. It's always fun seeing people on the internet try and lecture people with significantly more experience than them on a given subject.
