This video popped up in my recommended and I was surprised that it doesn't have many views. The production is really good and everything overall. In my opinion, keep using those songs on your videos. To me, it gives a vibe like if Dankpods was a technician.
What are you talking about? The SSD was one of the few parts that needed to be ordered specifically because the connector was so rare. And yeah, it's not special being able to hook up a rechargeable battery to a device that originally had a rechargeable battery. Ill-informed comment.
@@encycl07pedia- YEAH SO RARE...."Internally, nearly all hard drives use ZIF tape to connect their circuit board to their platter motor. ZIF tape connections are also heavily used in the design of the iPod range of portable media players, not just for the hard drive but also for other connections from the main circuit board. Three types of ZIF connectors are known to exist on 1.8 inch PATA drives. ZIF-24, ZIF-40, and ZIF-50 have 24, 40, and 50 pins respectively." Ill informed malevolent reply to non malevolent comment.
@@FeralRabbit Just because a three-prong plug is common for hooking up electrical devices to wall sockets doesn't mean you usually find the same three-prong plug on a motherboard. Solder is pretty common, too. That doesn't mean most companies releasing SSDs or HDDs ship them with a few exposed wires and expect users to solder them to the mobo, either.
Microsoft has really good hardware, however they usually suffer from sort of a too little too late type of thing with all of their products. They hop onto trends too late, and usually with some major lacking aspect of strange design choice that just ruins the products potential
There's an app for Android called Z Player which is a music player app that clones the Zune UI. It's quite an old app now though and doesn't get many updates, I think I started using it back in 2012.
I never had an original Zune, but I had a Zune HD that was my absolute favorite media device until I got into Windows Phone. I love that you breathed some new life into that old device, and it really makes me miss that Zune software.
@@AttackOnTyler The interface they created with the Zune HD that wound up becoming the Windows Phone interface was just so cool too. Like the idea of going "in" when you clicked on a menu item, so instead of a generic Back button, you clicked back "up" to the slightly out of focus menu that you were previously in. It felt so fluid, smooth, and natural to use.
As a Zune user who used one of these until it literally broke and immediately replaced it in high school, we were the best. I still use my Zune HD to this day! Actually am currently doing research into getting my 120gb Zune working again, HDD crapped out on me and then I just let the battery sit until it could no long hold a charge. But no more, it is time!
same thing happened to me - 80gb drive died and it's been in a drawer for over a decade :( loved it while it was working though. very tempted to do the drive and battery swap...
I still have my Zune Originals Zune 80 and it still works perfectly. It has never been opened up and has yet to be upgraded. Microsoft got a solid product here from Toshiba.
Going to be doing these upgrades. Just ordered a new SSD, 3000mah battery, and the wireless charging. Now if only I could source a new screen as mine has gotten a little beaten up over the years. Still glad to have this little piece of nostalgia, and the upgrade from 30gb to 128gb is going to be a game changer. I really wish I was as skilled as you to add the bluetooth transmitter, but that takes a certain level of modification I don't feel confident in doing myself.
If you're adding bluetooth functionality, make sure to add 5v dc to dc isolator at the output of voltage regulator. This will make the audio clear through bluetooth.
I loved my OG Zune, but the battery life became less and less so I eventually repurposed the drive into a portable USB drive and got a Zune mini and later an HD, both of which I still have. Awesome to see you giving the OG a new life! The shot of the Zune software was a huge trip down memory lane too, lol. So much better than iTunes, imo.
@@charlesdoesmore5488 still love mine. I really enjoy the Zune HD layout and design. I keep a lookout on my phone for a similar experience, but so far no luck.
@nack323 the price was about the same as the iPad at the time, but it had double the screen so movies were better, the iPhone destroyed this device. O If the zune was the phone that Microsoft made and put better effort into apps this would still be around.
I was a day 1 Zune adopter lol. I had the 80GB large (for its time) color screen. I remember spending late nights downloading sketchy full length pirated movies from Limewire to watch on my Zune. I had like 8-10 full movies on mine. I think it was just a little ahead of it's time.
This was really well made! As a lot of other people have pointed out, there's clearly some of Dankpods influence in this video (the music you used and opening shot specifically), but I think you have a really interesting channel identity here! As someone who's been trying to build my own channel over the last year, I feel like you've already had some really high quality videos and your projects are very interesting. Here's to getting monetized!
This is funny because I got my old zune out a couple of days ago and went down a rabbit hole for 2-3 hours figuring out how to get it to work on Windows 10. Works perfectly just like it did when I got it 2007, synced most of my music library to it 😄 But this…. this is AWESOME! I would love to mod my Zune like that but I’m afraid I would mess it up lol.
Just came back from watching Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, and I can confirm Zune is the new meta, just threw my iPod like Andy did with Woody, because this is the new and "cool" nostalgic gadget! BTW it's so weird I got recommended this video after watching a movie that featured this gadget, it's like if I were carrying a surveilance device with me all the time.
I just busted out my old, same model, Zune because I wanted to replace it's battery after I had stumbled on a video of someone doing so. I've been learning and messing with SBC's recently so (hopefully) all that should come in handy replicating your process here. Feel like it will be a good learning experience too regardless of how it turns out in the end
Amazing work!!! I just dug up my Zune and it still works but the battery is shot. You should be getting a lot of views now the Guardians 3 is out and Star-Lord has traded in his Walkman for a Zune!
I have a SanDisk MP3 Player (it can also play wav, 16 bit flac, and more) and I still use it sometimes. It seems to have no problems with large microSD cards and the battery is still ok.
I had one of these back in the days growing up, honestly i always preferred this over the ipod cause i didn't had to deal with itunes nonsense with videos/mp3 format conversion etc. It was just a drop and go for mp3/mp4 songs and videos. Finally RU-vid algorithm recommends something good especially a throwback.
@@wolframsv2527 Booo, leave Frank alone! 🤣 I take it y'all don't encounter too many Australians. From an Aussie perspective, I find DankPods genuine and knowledgable, and his larakin attitude makes him approachable and easy to listen to, like he's spinning a yarn the whole time.
Nice work! Maybe I will use this video as a template to upgrade my 80gb Zune to a larger SSD and bluetooth ability. I always preferred the Zune over Ipods.
Awesome video, makes me want to buy a Zune and tinker with it (wanted one like crazy back in college). 👍 And does anyone know how long the new battery would last between charges?
Got me through highschool also man! I remember when I first got mine i stayed up all night organizing my library and adding album art and movies. Had the whole school geeked to see that
Back in iPod era I already used my phone(s) as my MP3 player. I had Sony W310i (~2003 to 2006) and later Sony W910i (~2006 to 2009) music phones. I was ahead of time I guess lol.
Excellent video, I have been wanting to do this exact mod but with USB c too and an sd card to cf adapter rather than SSD for larger cheaper storage whilst being even more power efficient, however Zunes in aus are tough to get and very expensive and when they are listed unfortunately
Nice video (obvious dank pods influence) I just wonder why you went thru all that trouble for only 128gb! Is it a software limitation of the zune? If it's possible, go at least 512gb if not 1tb!
I remember wanting this so bad when I was in school. Problem was, they weren't easily available in our part of the world. Had to settle for an iPod instead. It's great to see new life being birthed from something from almost a couple decades ago. Great quality video!
Yep, same for me. In Singapore at the time, the best options were either an iPod classic or a Zen (2007), if I recall correctly. The closest I got was that I had the Zune desktop theme installed on my older laptop running Windows XP that I normally used to run some old software that didn't work on Vista (I hadn't yet heard of virtualisation at the time).
I still have my 30 gig zine but holy heck those short soldering points are difficult af. Tried doing small ones like that when making my own UBS cables could never get it right
Hell yeah brother! I still run my Zune HD to this day, the battery still holds a a charge for days and I get about 6+ hours of play time. Love these MP3 players!
Awesome! The only upgrade I to my 30GB Zune (which I use everyday) is add a bluetooth transmitter to the headphone jack. Have to manually plug the transmitter in each time, but it works better than wired earbuds.
Over here in Europe, at least in germany, we've never had the Zune. I've heard of it, but never really looked into it. Interesting device with some pretty cool modifications^^
What a great video! I'd seen Zune, etc., storage drive swaps before, but your solution for the Qi charging and particularly the BT antenna were absolutely ingenious! I can see why you chose the early Zune 30 GB devices rather than the more popular Zune 80, given the tight fit; I'm a bit sad I sold mine to fund a custom-engraved Zune HD (which I still have, and works as a incredibly compact and intuitive MP3 player, though its file form support is limited). It was definitely never as popular as the iPod, but I do remember Zunes became the second most popular PMD/PMP brand, ousting Creative, but that was no doubt due to the general culling of the device market sadly (with D-Link, Archos, etc., gradually leaving, alongside Microsoft and Apple); it does seem like Creative is the last surviving inexpensive mass-market PMP manufacturer (their devices seem far more popular than Sony and the more high-end manufacturers putting out players that cost as much, or more, than smart phones), giving them the last laugh.
i miss my zune 1st generation, hard brown like a brik!!........sadly i smash a little bit the lcd, but i still have it.......man i will like to make those updates!!!
This was a lot of fun to watch! I love seeing old tech upgraded and made useful again! My MP3 contant companion was the OG mass-market MP3 player, the Diamond Rio PMP300 that I got in 1998. It had 32MB (yes, you read that right) of onboard memory that was good for about 8-10 songs at 128kbps, and the single AA battery lasted maybe 8-10 hours? I loved that thing and carried it daily for years! It did have expandable storage through a SmartMedia slot (precursor to SD cards), and I did eventually add a 64MB card. It also had a TERRIBLE battery flap design where the only thing that phsically connected the battery flap to the rest of the device was the soldered joint that also connected the battery. It broke regularly and I had to dissasmble and re-solder it every few months. I finally replaced my Rio when I got my Sony Clié PDA in 2003. It was the end of era - the Rio was the only dedicated MP3 player I owned.
Ah, a fellow PMP300 user! I still have two of them, the original black one, and the special edition 64MB translucent green version! I have a question for you... have you tried any bigger smartmedia cards in it? I know they made bigger sizes than 64MB (I want to say I've seen them up to 128, maybe 256 MB), d you think those bigger cards would work too? I've been wanting to mess with them again and upgrade the storage but don't want to waste my money on rare cards if they won't work.
@@FinalManaTrigger I used to lust over the special edition one! Especially before I got the SmartMedia card. Sadly I never got a chance to try a bigger card - by the time I could have afforded a 128MB, I had switched to MemoryStick for my Sony Clié. By that point, the battery door was so battered from dozens of repairs, that I scrapped the poor thing alltogether.
I have a Zune HD from 2010 still full of 2000’s metalcore and other stuff I was listening to in high school. It still works beautifully and is still awesome
The one problem with this video? No chapters. It's a shame, but otherwise this was an incredibly helpful video! Thank you very much for appreciating the Zune as much as me. lol
I remember waiting in line at 4am at toys r us for one on black Friday years ago. I had the brown one and it was one of my favorite mp3 devices. You just made it ten times better awesome job!
I never got a zune but considered one after my 30GB Creative Zen Vision M broke. I tried to avoid the Ipod for so long because I didnt want to use itunes....ended up getting an ipod. Since then it has been diff iterations of ipods. Nanos, Classics and Touches. All second hand from ebay.
At first I was going to make a "We have Dank Pods at home" joke, but that would be an insult to the quality and effort put into this video. You make me want to find a Zune and mod it myself! Great work.
Hey! I've just finished upgrading my brown Zune 30 with the Bluetooth module, the 128GB SSD drive and the 3000mAh battery! Thanks for the inspiration and detailed video! I also have a Zune HD, but I don't think it can be modded at all. No space. Bluetooth would be nice!
I had the Sandisk Sansa E player with me everywhere. It used TransFlash-cards (called MicroSD nowadays) and it was fantastic. Only the propietary charging cable and short battery life was the letdown. Lasted until 2018 when the battery exploded....
Always wanted a Zune, love the way the UI looked on it, sadly never owned one. My go to media player back in college in about 2005 was a Sony MZ-NH600 HI-MD MiniDisc player, with a remote it was awesome even if I had to carry a few discs considering you could only store so many MP3s on each disc. I was then gifted a 2nd gen iPod Shuffle and moved to a 4th gen Nano. Would love one now.
Mine was a Sony Walkman with about 2gb (or 4gb) memory. It was in 2010. I used it until 2012, when I got my first smartphone, a Samsung Galaxy Ace. I can't believe it was over 10 years ago.
Thuesday 30 may in the news. A exploding Zune in the train from ..... Wanted this 1 pretty bad, at the time but uhm.....i think Psp then Had some mysic on my DS 2 for the rest cheap usb sticks mo3 players
Those BT dongles always have a ton of static but it's still a cool addition to add. I'm surprised all those upgraded fit but that is a chunky case. I was always an iPod guy but when I finaly met someone with a Zune I liked it a lot. Like, had I not moved music to a smart phone I'd have moved on to Zune. Or, had my introduction to mp3 players been a Zune before an iPod I'd have been a Zune user. For sure. They didn't deserve the flak they took.
error 5 means ur harddriver is broken, change another disk to let ur red working!!!! red is mzfk beautiful for a zune!!!!! u make this hot bro!!!! far away from china message!!!
I used to have a 30GB in high school before my mom got me the 120GB. I was able to rip a bunch of DVDs and put them in the device. My friends would get jealous of the huge display (at the time).
Man, I would really love to see a Zune OS decompilation project take place. The Zune is a great device, and I would love to see hackers and others get their hands into those devices. I bought a Zune HD recently and if it wasn't for the fact that Windows 11 isn't friendly with it, I'd be using it more.
I loved the Zune. If Steve Ballmer hadn't been such an Apple obsessed dip$hit, and realized that they made a great product and just needed to stick with it, then the Zune would have sold well and maybe the excellent Windows phones would still be around. Ballmer's common sense obviously left him with his hair.
I used to have a Symbian phone with a 1gb sd card full of ogg q0 music files… Sendo X, my faithful music and video player in high school, that also happened to make calls and text! What a novelty!
I wish I still had my well-loved Zune. It was stolen in high school and I was never able to get it back. Now they’re going for insane prices. I would love to do an upgrade on one and I would probably still use the hell out of it. Sad how the Zunes sounded better then than iPhones do now…. Bluetooth codecs have been such a downgrade for sound. Hard to believe people accept it. Apple can do a lot better in that dept if they cared to and bring hifi wireless but so far have shown no interest. Sony wipes the floor with Apple on Bluetooth codecs. Why Apple? Why?
I had a mini zune for like 4 years in highschool and loved it to death. I had playlist after playlist. I literally didn’t switch to apple until the IPhone 7 came out and Apple Music started. I still use Apple Music today but if Microsoft would just have the balls to keep updating shit I’d probs still have a zune and a windows phone
You ever decide to this as a side job I'd be interested in getting mine done. I have a Halo 3 unit. I did just replace the battery, but I'd like to use this in a vehicle as a Bluetooth device and the vehicle already has wireless charging. I'd do it, as my A and C school in the Navy consisted of this and I attended 3M school for this type of work. However, I now need glasses and the hands just aren't steady enough for this type of work anymore
Honestly surprised to learn my Zune had/has a HDD not a SSD/Flash Memory. Same for the iPods. Explains why it didn't last long though. All the vibrations from skating couldn't have been good.
The Zune was the best piece of hardware Microsoft ever made. I had two and loved them.. like seriously used one til about 2014 lol. Never had an iPod, went strait to an iPhone 5c then iPhone 11
oh boy. this peach doesnt even have bluetooth. wtf mycro softe, remember samsung indigo? its made in 2006 like the original zune and then also was the zune hd in 2009, still with no bt
The zune was op. I had the smaller one and the HD. Still have the HD. The drive is dying, with transferring between PC occasionally causes it to freeze on some files.
I need someone to upgrade my blackberry classic. I need to add a USB type C and a new Bluetooth antenna and make it capable of using GPS and Amazon music or Spotify
I have 4 Zune 2s all with SSDs and bigger batteries, but the blue tooth i always felt was missing. I have been preparing for the last few months what I will do when Windows 12 comes out and the Zune software doesnt work on it.
The Zune was way better than the iPod. Then again, the Dell Jukebox was the best thing. Both failed commercially because they weren't built for the brain dead.
One time, I had to use a windows phone temporarily because my old phone stopped working on me, I haven't used it for years when I got a new phone until one day I found it still in working condition, since the phone was as small as an MP3 player I thought why don't I just use it as an music player from now on, now I use it every single day
Never got to have a Zune or iPods , i got the sandisk sansa 😅. But the Zune media player on PC was awesome. Back then their subscription music service gave a free album each month to own if i remember right .
