@@petermcnallt12pm I was going to make this point. I'm a size UK12 and tend to find some. Very small and very large are easiest to get on the cheap. Some companies don't even make 12s so they don't get any of my £.
If on a budget, which we all should be, last seasons color way can be a HUGE savings, example. Nike Infinity Run FK 3, MSRP $160 USD, purchased $93 USD this week @ REI. Also purchased Nike Pegasus 39 MSRP $130 USD, purchased $76 USD @ Road Runner's Sports. Both this year, just end of season colors.... as a cost savings idea. Another great video Ben!
I made the mistake of buying some budget shoes, but there's really no reason to do that. As you showed at the end, you can always find some really great deals for last year's "high-end" models. The difference between something like an Asics Gel Excite and an Asics Novablast is big but they can potentially be found for the same price.
I just got my new novablast 2 a week ago at around 70usd. But the manufacturer date was April 2021 and that was my concern. I am newbie in running. Do i need to be worried about the quality of shoes with long manufacturing date? I have no experience on that. Thanks.
After watching one of your earlier videos I went for the Reebok Floatride 3, got them for about £50 and could not fault them. Really good shoe and excellent value for money. On my second pair now.
My favourite running shoes of all time were some cheap Asics I bought in 2008~, I think they were called Gel Radience or something. Don't know why but they were just perfect for me. Objective performance stuff is good and all, but when you find that perfect shoe for your foot it's heartbreaking when they wear out, no matter the price.
Ahhhh yes that elusive "perfect shoe for me!!" ... always best to grab a second pair for the cupboard until needed as they really do disappear so quickly!!!
Couldnt agree more mate. Mine was adidas gazelle boost, the shoe was absolutely fantastic for me as I broke my PBs in 3k,5k and 10k and i also ran a half marathon with it! It just feels so comfortable for me. I did use it way over its milleage and make full use of it until one day it wears out 😂 but it was the best shoe i ever had
Always love the videos Ben. I have to shout out the training plans. I was extremely prepared for my first half marathon with the NYC half this last weekend and cannot wait to see what progress I get with future plans!
Hi Ben Nice review, my cheapest running shoe €14 from Decathlon in Malta ran half marathon in 1hr 30 min hilly course was blown away how comfortable the shoes was grip was good but durability was poor. Just goes to show high price doesn't always mean the best.
Yep, same here. Where I live there's almost always huge discounts on women's running shoes as opposed to Men's, so I just buy my size equivalent in Women's. The only difference is they seem to be slightly more narrow around the heel which I actually find gives me better lock down
Hey Ben I love your videos man, very informative and helpful. Just wanted to thank you because it's hard to find quality reviews on running shoes from what I've been able to see. I took your advice and looked into last years models and ended up going with the Asics gel cumulus 25 and man I gotta say they feel AMAZING compared to what I was running in before! I was able to sign up with Asics as a member to receive and additional 10% off and free shipping on top of the shoes being on discount. All together I paid $93 and saying it was worth it is and understatement! As a new runner, thanks again and keep up the great content.
Atreyu Base Model. US$85. Comfy, soft, light, lots of ground feel. I've comfortably done up to 10 miles in them. Like the ones you've chosen, I'd do 5k, maybe 10k in them for racing if I had to. I love them most for recovery runs, though.
Adidas seems to have great sales on their website. Last week, I grabbed a pair of the Adizero Boston 11 for $35 during their spring sale. When I first started running in January, I got the Adizero Adios 7 for $40. Both seem rather controversial with reviewers, but I've loved them so far.
I like a zero drop shoe with some width in the toe box so run exclusively on Altra's. I found a pair of their new Vanish Carbon's for over £100 off which I couldn't pass by. That deal is now gone and they're full price (£220 which is too much imo). Having never run in a carbon plate shoe before they felt strange but did actually make me go faster!
Best shoe bargains I got was a 25% Nike sale a few months ago. Picked up the Vaporfly v2 for £101 and the Invincible 2 for 80odd! Still haven’t got the VF out the box!
I've been running since 1978 in H.S. track. Bought the original Nike Waffle Stompers. Back then, those shoes were leaps better than what came before. I run for health and exercise. All I have ever needed was a simple everyday pair that are inexpensive, fit well, have nice cushion, long lasting rubber soles. I do buy trusted brands though, Asics, Saucony, NB, Nike, Brooks, in the basic style shoe. I have no need for the latest tech shoes. Older tech has kept me on the road and trail without issue.
Buying last years iteration of a top end shoe is what I do. Still today for my trials runners I’m buying inov8 trailfly g270 version 1 for about 1/3 the price of the gen 2 … I do this especially when the new iteration isn’t much of an improvement over the previous. Right now I’m getting 3 pairs for the price of one V2 g270. Same thing for the saucony triumph 20’s I just bought for $85 usd to step into road running.
Last season deals are my go-to. Even for the carbon plate shoes, I have been able to pick them up lower than MSRP. Definitely spot on advice you gave there!!
I’ve seen the new balance fuel cell TC recently for around £75 in their outlets, a great premium do it all shoe. Adidas have been clearing Bostons and Adios Pro 2’s pretty cheap in store.
Just bought a pair Adidas Adizero 2 for£107. Rrp £179. They replace my Mizuno Waverunners which shamefully are 7 years old and north of 3000 miles minimum. What a transformation, faster and more comfortable. As i usually run off road i use trail specific running shoes and Mizunos only just retired to walking in.
My best running shoe bargain was a pair of Puma Liberate Nitro I picked up for $69.00 CAD at SportChek last year. I love them for my interval workouts.
I used the same Reebok for about 600km, in one year. It was my first jogging shoe. No complaints. Now I bought a Nike Miler 3. Of course there is no comparison. Much better! But the Reebok was a honest choice for the money!
Puma Deviate Nitro Elite, £75 ish for a carbon plated race shoe at Start Fitness. Great shoe, irrelevant of the price. Nike Pegasus Trail 4, £65 is you’re not picky on colour and they’re a cracking road to trail shoe.
Saucony Cohesions are in their running category. The midsole is their old versafoam which I guess refers to "versatile"--can be used for walking or running. But I got 400 pure running miles out of them and they worked great for me. I think they're $60 new.
On the Reebok website, I bought the Reebok Floatride energy 4 for £55. I think they are usually about £80, but for £55 they are a MUST buy. I own a pair of the Brooks Ghost 14, which brand new are about £130, but I honestly think the floatride 4's are the best shoe I have ran in, and I spend just over £50 for them, was able to run a 3:08 marathon in them and they held up brilliantly, no sore feet afterwards or anything like that!
Got both Saucony Tempus and Puma Velocity Nitro 2 for about £100/$120 here in India. Just by numbers it's like two for the price of one velocity nitro. That too, considering the fact that the dollar to rupee rate for imported luxury footwear is at a direct 100 instead of the exchange rate of 82. I wish there were such deals for the race day plated super shoes as well. Those are nowhere to be found below the rrp.
Can you please tell how to buy good marathon running shoes of Saucony or Brooks here in india? Also , if you can suggest any shoe models from these brands which you have been using and find good for training and race day. Thanks
My best deals was; Hoka Rocket X for £75 off pro direct running in August 2022 and last month I got a pair of ASICS Novablast 2 at Sports direct (!!) for £35 Trend for me seems to be buying good shoes, a year or 2 after release, so no brand new releases
Always look for brands own outlet stores. Asics (and others) even link to their outlet store in the main navigation on their website. Bought from Asics and was hugely cheaper and absolutely great.
Got Puma Velocity 2 for less than 30£ last year from ASOS. Recently bought Nike Pegasus Trail 4 Goretex for less than 60 £. Had to hand in a pair of used running shoes to get the last deal
Found the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 for £ 53 on the second hand market ... They were unused only tried on inside, but fit didnt match. They are my favorite shoe now.
Last year I bought Adizero Adios 6. Pretty light and breathable but absolute discrace when talking about durability. Ripped open on both thumbs, ripped insides and the sole is worned out to the smoothness. And I'm not even running long distances (8km, 2-3 times a week). Last pair was cheaper lasted for 3 years. So yesterday I bought Nike Revolution 7 just for the fun of it. If I destroy them in a year is just 55€ well spent.
I'm a fan of new balance. I'm doing charity 5ks (not fast) so they work well for me. I have an outlet near me and they have deals or last year's model. Thanks for this review!
Got myself a pair of Nike Zoom Fly 4 from the bike outlet near me for £56 in November last year. Friend recently got the same pair (different colourway) for just £37.
This is an excellent video. It's a pity you don't have wide feet, so you could talk about running shoes for the wider foot. I bought some ASICS Gel Nimbus recently, as I was looking for more cushioning and a longer life expectancy than my Brooks Ghost. My foot overhung the sole of the ASICS on both sides. They sell wide in the USA and Canada, but not in the UK and won't post them from abroad either. I find New Balance 1080 too narrow too. I mainly use inov8, as I do more trail than road, but I'm looking for a comfortable road shoe for long training runs and marathons.
NB 680 v7 real bargains now on sale for about $35 on sale as they’re discontinued. Regular price is $75. These are nice and supportive with sufficient cushion.
I used to buy all my shoes based on how much I saved, which meant I bought most shoes from Wiggle. The worst shoes were Puma Ignite Ultimate Layered. They were probably close to 400g in a UK 9. I considered them training shoes and they worked okay when I was fitter than my running partner. I got 1000km out of them but I definitely should have retired them much earlier because a massive chunk of the heal foam had rubbed off. When they got wet it was not fun!
I have both the symmetros and the Floatride energy adventure. Both bought heavily discounted. The Floatride adventure is probably my favourite daily trainer as it can handle light trails as well.
In the past two weeks I’ve bought puma deviate nitro 2 for 89 euro, NB Rebel v3 for 105 euro and Brooks Glycerein 20 for 108…… definitely bargains to be got if you keep an eye online
Bought the Asics Gel Excite 7, on sale, a year and a half ago as a new runner at age 54, weighing 107kg (now 96.5kg). After 1200 km the integrity in the arches is starting to go. Think they were worth every penny. Time for an upgrade.
Another for the Gel Excite, picked up a pair for 30 quid in an outlet which I use in bad weather. No issues at all although never go over 600km in trainers due to stress in old joints
Hello ben! My best shoe purchase was done today. Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 for 104USD. I watched many reviews on them before buying them, among others i saw your review on them. Thanks for some great content on your channel! Greetings from Sweden
This price point is supplied to most basic training soldiers, yes they can be if you can get at least two pairs, but if you only get one, especially on Nike, wet conditions can be ALL the blisters, and do not match $129 as a Saucony era. I still recommend New Balance, for a rain marathon even retro there.
Nice video, shows if you’re just starting out you can pop to anywhere and get some shoes. I had a pair of those Nikes for playing football with the kids and generally getting trashed and they were fine. Best bargain ever…probably a pair Saucony Guide 15 for £50 just after Christmas.
SURELY it's a much better idea to get "middle" models on sale rather than picking up the bottom of the line... I wanted a cross-over gym shoe for running on the treadmill or a quick 8-10km run between gym classes, so I picked up the Adidas Solar Boost 3 for €48 and Solar Glide 5 for €54. The Puma Velocity Nitro 2 can be had for under €60 right now... now that would be a WAY better option, being incredibly versatile, especially with that excellent outsole which is awesome on light trails too!!
I started with 'Couch to 5K' last year using an old pair of Nike Revolution NM. They feel good except they are slightly too narrow in the toes, I definitely should've gone up a size. I tried to upgrade my shoes this year and bought the Asics Gel Excite but I had to return them in the end. They felt comfortable but too soft/bouncy for me. It made my knees feel weird after running in them.
Just picked up a pair of Saucony Ride 15s for £49.99. This is my second pair the first having covered almost 600 everyday miles and still look great although the foam is now quite dead. The other thing is go for a less popular colour way if you’re after a bargain.
Got a pair of Alphaflys v1 from a Nike outlet for £79. I didn’t need them, but couldn’t afford not to buy them at that price (I’ve yet to actually run in them)
I can get Saucony Freedom 4s for 70 Canadian which is amazing for a minimalist shoe with PB plus foam. Like moccasins on long or short runs. On my 3rd pair now. 400 miles in first two pairs.
Adidas ultra4d for £60. Surprisingly comfortable and responsive shoe for casual runs. Looks like it’s come from space however so that’s a positive/negative depending on your point of view Great vid! Sitting here wearing my rest day jumper feeling like a Stan 😄
I do 3 to 4 runs a week and minimum 3.7 miles a day and I still have addidas galaxy 6 after a year I put duct tape ion the most worn areas and it stops wear and tear And it is testament to the mid soul and all souls that the galaxy 6 is a strong and durable running shoe I big them up for others to buy them I've put Miles on my galaxy and they are perfect condition in terms of comfort Slight wear on the heel area from rubbing but they have fine me a great service
I bought 3 shoes for £130 total (Adidas Duramo 10, ASICS Jolt 3, and New Balance 680 v7) and they are all suitable and sufficient for my HM training block. I’ve found that the budget level running shoes from the large companies are fine for the average recreational runner, and can save you a fortune…..
Note that cheap shoes with no added durable rubber on the bottom are classified as slippers, not shoes. America imports 99 percent of its shoes from abroad, paying 3.4 billion dollars in tariffs in 2021 alone. While tariffs vary greatly depending on certain styles and make, footwear has an average tariff of 13 percent, rising to 48 percent and 67.5 percent on specific categories.
Back in 2017 my first pair of proper running shoes were NB 880's from a NB outlet for £45, I thought they were great and got some newer versions of them in the next year or so. I tried other shoes but didn't get on with any of them until I got some Nike pegs version 35, I loved them, I still have a silver pair of ver. 35's hardly worn, I'll have to try them sometime see how they feel now. I have a pair of 35's shield in black(outlet £35), I think I did one run in them, they were ok but your feet do get a bit warm but I must have walked more than 500 miles in them and the sole still has zero sign of wear, tip, best walking shoes are running shoes. I have some NB 1080's ver.11's about £50 from an outlet, not for me running wise but look great and feel great walking in them. When I got my first pair of Peg turbo 2's I realised what a bit difference a shoe can make to your running, I still have a lovely blue pair with hardly any wear on them, I keep threatening myself to have a run in them to see what they are like compared to Vaporflys and Alphaflys.
Towards the end of last year I found a pair of Puma Vellocity Nitro for £50 online. This is one of the best daily running shoes I have ever owned. I just couldn't believe the value.
Ben, forget toasters mate. The best toast is made under the grill in the over or in a pan on the stove with a bit of olive oil. Once I discovered this I binned my toaster and haven’t looked back since. That was nearly 20 years ago. Try it, it’ll change your life.
I’d buy a pair of reebok energy floatrides with a discount code got a pair for £52 last year and there good won’t break any records in them but good for casual runners and any surface too
Asics 33-M was a dandy shoe, and I'm a shoe snob. I'm ALL about comfort. Don't know why they got rid of it. It was cushioned really well, and my first intro to 4mm drop shoes. I had two pair of those. New about $50
Oh dude, the New Balance outlet store in Sydney will absolutely annihilate most "bargains" out there. Running shoes in Australia start at around $160 AU and those are prtetty bad... they go up to $400 for the top level Brooks, Adidas, Nike etc. BUT... at the New Balance outlet I have found: 1080 (I think it was v10) for $60. Zante v2 for $36. And probably best of all, most recently, the Fuelcell Rebel v3 (RRP here $220) for... $48. That's the equivalent of 22 pounds (because our prices are normally your number but doubled, even though that's not reflective of the exchange rate). Obviously sizes can be tricky but as I'm an 11 and have nothing against 2E, there's often leftovers in my size.
I'm still very undiscriminating. Bought by first pair of runners 10 months ago in the small city of Claremont CA. Less than US$60 for Saucony Cohesion 14. It was a family sports store, and these appeared to be the best shoes available there. Spent a lot less than I expected, and I think they've served me well. I still wear them in the rain to save the Pegasus 39s that I bought six months later for Taiwan$3,000 (less than $100 or GBP100 at the time). I think I prefer these to the Sauconys--and I hope I don't get too discriminating as I progress to my next pair, frankly!
The Reebok Floatride Energy shoes have always been a bargain and great shoes. I use a pair of the adventure 4s for my parkrun and they are great, got them for £55.
I’m just getting into running and browsing around. I’m planning on getting two pairs of shoes in 2024 to start building a rotation. I’m hoping to get some older models for a good price in the 80-120 range. Hoping to get a shoe like the Novablast and a shoe like the Pegasus to start the rotation
The best bargain I got. Someone wore a pair of Nike Winflo 7s (when they first came out), wore them a couple of times, and they ripped along the side where the big toe is. They donated them to Rerun Clothing who stitched and glued the rip up and I got them for free. Got over 800 miles out of them before they ripped again.
Great video first time here but I've always bought circa £50 mostly in the sales last years model etc. I've always thought unless you're a serious runner then i wouldn't spend 100+ on a pair of running shoes. Make sure to have a couple of pairs in rotation and stop using them for running when they feel worn normally around 500 miles. But I'm only doing up to 10k mostly.
I can do a reasonably supplied Marathon and half marathon pace. Met to NCAA Division 1 on 5 and close to 10k. Might have had a racewalk record in in a Nike JV2 Revolution 6. They are 41.00. Horrid on wet trail running conditions. Still need a New Balance there.
