I think it'd be cool to see someone figure out this product I found a while ago. It's a rear view mirror, that's also a screen you can use as a backup camera. It had a bunch of other features too. If I can find it again I'll post it here
I also got this in recommended. I watch a ton of car repair videos (South Main Auto, Pine Hollow Auto Diag, etc) so I guess it makes some amount of sense. I get a kick out of seeing old cars given a new lease on life, even more so economy cars like this Malibu.
Considering I recently crashed my 02 Malibu, and the fact that right now I have no money to repair it. Your video brought back some good memories of working on my car right when I needed them most. Thank you.
The vid brought back some nostalgia for me too. I had a '98 Malibu, it's what I learned how to install stereo stuff in. Full speaker swap, Pioneer head unit, and a 10" sub in the back. I actually miss that car, I sold it a handful of years ago for $400.
jack adams Actually as a used car buyer that’s definitely a perk that can standout when making a decision on things. having that extra little touch to a car that normally wouldn’t have bluetooth let alone an aux or usb plug in. people don’t know the price of that thing it looks good and definitely adds value to the car , people want that shit
Zach Reynolds so Dodge is part of FCA, and At least in my Uconnect system, for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, they didn’t update it till 2018 with Apple car play. Mine is just slow to connect, maps doesn’t load until a couple minutes and the user interface is just bad. I know on other Jeep models and FCA models they updated the uconnect with Apple car play in 2016. I can take it to my dealer to reset it but that’s all I can hope for
>Plugs in pigtail without wiring it to the head unit, and flops the red, yellow and black wires around with the battery connected Me: *Sweats nervously*
Cool, Dude! Tanks. What a great encouragement to grab a substitute for the built-in, semi non-working factory radio/cd player in my old 2007 Saturn Vue. I was avoiding these cheapie deals, but as you point out, it costs less than even a back-up camera alone! I really appreciate this. I may get a dog unit, but it is worth the try. You've done a fine job with the video. Thanks!
Nah, you were talking about cars and what you would love to buy while your phone was listening. You got a cat? No, good. Talk of cat food and see if your phone lists an ad for it.
I actually have this exact radio in my trailblazer and to be honest I’m decently impressed. I’ve had it for around a year now and it does everything I need it to. The menus are surprisingly smooth and the touch screen is pretty responsive
Every time I watch one of your videos, I add another upgrade to my list for my 2013 Tahoe. I’m gonna see if there is a head unit that will work for it. Thanks Matt, your videos are much fun and educational.
Hey man, this is a good video. I used to drive a 2001 Malibu LS model. It was my first car. Stupid me traded it for a Chrysler. Now, I have a 2004 Chevy Classic, which is about the same thing. I like the touchscreen and backup camera you installed. I got a standard aftermarket radio w/o touch and backup to install. All I gotta say is the Malibu is nice!
I just sold my 2001 Malibu. Bought for 1200 bucks last year as a first car. Put brand new summer and winters on it, full sound system with a Kenwood HU, 2 10" subs and amp, and a bunch of other stuff. Put in like 2000 into repairs and cleaning. Sold it for $1100 last week. Malibu's don't sell for shit man hope you do better than I did.
I paid 130 at autozone for my touchscreen boss audio deck, it's badass, it made my system way louder and it had all the outputs plus I can watch movies on it and it has bluetooth so I don't have to worry about my aux cord breaking and my phone instantly connects when I hop in. I put it in my 08 cobalt ls. I recently replaced the front speakers with alpines though, and the system is even better.
I bought the Podafu brand unit , it was $ 38 on Amazon. Came with a remote that attaches on the steering wheel, a hand remote and the backup camera. With these units you connect your cell thru USB and display GPS and RU-vid or any app . And the sound is actually good.
Bought the same radio while back from amazon seems to reset clock and settings to default sometimes. Other than that it works fine and plays music and videos from sd card well.
I've had this same head unit in my Mustang for the last year. It still works great after a year. The only thing I don't like about it is that is sounds a bit muffled when the volume is lower. That could be because of the Mach 460 system they put the Mustang, which has 3 stock amps.
I have the same exact radio in my 69 cutlass convertible it’s good enough to get some sounds bangin I have 2 6x9s and 2 5 1.4 hooked to it and it’s nice and clear
I’ve been running the same headunit in my car for the past 18 months, While it’s far from perfect it’s actually “Decent” for the price. What I actually did is put a double adapter on the Reverse parking camera, Then got a Dash cam that predominantly records frontwards but when the cars put in reverse the exact image and guidelines shown on the headunit for the reverse parking camera then gets recorded onto the dash cam. The only thing the manual said it was capable of using the steering wheel audio controls and has the wires for it but haven’t figured that out yet, As it’d be nice to use even if it’s just the Volume up and down and track forward and back and mode on the steering wheel.
Made a big difference in my 2012 Corolla. Mine wasnt as cheap as this one; it was $150 with instillation. Anyways I started wanting a newer car because mine looked really dated inside. I put that cheap radio in about 3 years ago and it really helped.
This is the closest video I have found so far for what I’m trying to do with my car. It’s a 2002 Mazda protege and I’m looking to buy the same stereo as your from Amazon but the wiring was something I didn’t know dip about till now. You were clear on every step, plugging the custom made harness into the factory one first, then the other two that come with the stereo are soldered/connected to it thus making the stereo compatible. Thank you for the visual tutorial and clear tips.
These are great units at ridiculous low prices. I've just installed one in my 98 Toyota 4 Runner and it looks and performs awesome. All of just $47. Thank you China :-D
I might add: If you turn on "debugging" on your android phone you can screen mirror your cell phone via the USB cable, good for GPS or RU-vid. Also if you need to turn the screen off for night driving you click the sun icon on the top right of the screen. I hooked up a subwoofer to this as well, it has been great for the last 5 months!
Good video. Many of these Chinese radios handbrake feature can be disabled or enabled so you can get away without connecting the handbrake feed. But some touch screen radios need this connected. For the navigation side of things. It helps the navigation work out if the car is parked or not. Not just for dvd playback. Just wanted to point that out. Enjoyed your video
I had a problem with my wire harness as well on my 06 dodge but I connected it to the constant power and have it on a toggle switch for off and on and has worked great for about a year now
I think I want to hug you... I just got one of these I had ordered from wish.com... you told me everything I needed to know. I'm putting this in my 2007 Saturn Vue, and it has exactly the feature(s) I need. I even forgot about the backup camera until it fell out of the box! Too cool. You are really great on camera... just natural and you showed all the technical stuff really well. Gret job! Thanks again, Dude. I'll look for more of your videos.
I actually got this same unit for my moms old 2003 Honda CR-V, and she likes it. I got her a little low profile 32GB thumb drive and put all her favorite music on it. She was jamming out to some Jefferson Airplane and Jethro Tull.
I purchased 2 of these, one for my 97 integra as it had oem radio, and 95 integra on my girlfriends. The bluetooth was exactly what i wanted. Just got done installing 1, bad ass 👌🏽👌🏽, installing back up camera tomorrow.
I've been watching your Tahoe videos for inspiration with my Suburban (great videos btw!) and all of a sudden see the exact stereo my Suburban came with, that I spent 4 hours in the SC heat rewiring last week, on this thumbnail. So of course I gotta watch it and see how it worked for you.
I bought that same unit about 3 months ago. I use 3m double sided tape to get it to stay in my dash kit and i have no complaints. It’s a pretty solid unit and I think I paid $34 for mine but it was definitely worth it.
Epiccomedy it gets rid of the guess work My tints make it so hard to back up my suv, i always guess i have less space then i actually do And its easier on my dads explorer, although his suv is bigger. And im really good at parking (not to brag) Plus the camera comes free, mine was $49.99 its not that bad.
@@epiccomedy227 who does that, you turn your head then, BOOM! neck cramp. Then you in pain, crash then vehicle blow up. Backup camera eliminates all that.
I put one on 02' buick . looks nice sounds. The down side. Is the equalizer reset itself everytime. The sceen is bright. But it does have qiuck dim. Light button . plus side the camera works good . especially if got that dark tint.
I bought one of these. The only problem I had was the constant wire melted the Hennessy it came in. I fixed it and had no problems since. Works great. I’m even using the RCA outputs for my sub.
Holy crap and I just bought a double din Pioneer head unit for my impala, and I saw this exact one thinking, it’s cheap but a risk for me. Glad to see you got it so I can see maybe if thats better than $250 lol.
For your consideration, PLZ makes a capacitive touchscreen head unit with a backup camera for $20 more, and has a more sleek UI. Only drawback is no volume knob. I'm actually looking to get that one, and I believe it has firmware updates as well. Just for anyone out there, or for you lsxmatt if you decide to put one in another car some day!
Basic and ordinary is all I ask for. I might give it a go. Right now I have a single din $20 Walmart Duel system but I do a lot of driving for work at night and the bright blue in the unit I have is quite bothersome because I just cannot figure out how to dim it. This one seems like it might be a great upgrade.
Why? The next owner will be replacing the unit, so the wires will be different. Also all headunits even cheap ones like this will have a sticker with the wires on it
@@somcreative I didnt, the version of the radio I bought already had a newer software package. But nothing much different. A bit cleaner and faster than this one.
I bought one of these in 2014 for 100 dollars at a local store, I'm surprised they still sell that exact model 5 years later with no updates what so ever. It was branded "Marquant"
Threw one in my blazer ...Used bird house wood as a frame from the Dollar store ..I mean really i glued those suckers to the unit and a few Popsickle sticks as shims dollar store black paint bang fits like a glove
I drive a 80 regal . Put a Walmart stereo on it works like a charm. Connects Bluetooth in a instant. My buddies 2018 impala tho ... lol have to park , wait & then wait some more . & then it’ll connect haha
Ive had one of those for about 2 years. It resets sometimes after its on for hours bluetoothing but other than that its great. Best 29 bucks ive spent in years..
Check the sound with the engine running to see if you get engine whine. I put a pioneer touch screen with back up cam, blue tooth, dvd, etc in my 98 Trans Am.
Oh and I had the same problem with the install kit....I had to make a couple small cuts in mine (and file down some of the plastic) to get it to fit correctly. You wouldn't notice it if I didn't say anything about it.
I bought this identical radio from Walmart last Christmas, it was branded as a Blaupunkt Baltimore 650BD and came with two speakers for $49.88. I see ended up buying a $14 backup camera and installed it in my 03 Super Duty, mainly for lining up with my trailer. It works well, only complaint is occasionally when I start the truck and it connects to my phone, it will redial the last number I called. Weird. The reason you have to push a little on the screen is because it's resistive instead of capacitive, but the upside is it will work with gloves So, overall not bad for $50
I´ve sold about 700 head units of this just with our brand name, i haven´t got more than 8 or 9 with problems, they definitely great for the price and you even have a very quick mirrorlink for almost every phone out there including iphone!! They cost about 25$ on china :)
I installed into my Honda CRV in 2014 a Pyle ( Pyle has been around for I remember seeing the brand for first time in an old JC Whitney catalog back when I was a kid ) system. While I connected everything including something I shouldn't have I unfortunately blew out the lights on the instrument cluster which even if I replace the bulbs it wouldn't work, make sure you know what wires you're hooking up. Personally I soldered everything and used shrink tube over the connections which in my view is the best way of doing it. I installed a Pyle 459 ( I think that's the model number ) everything went fine except for what I mentioned. It does pay to get a wiring harness kit so that the factory harness can plug right into it. The only downside is the camera I purchase was too cheap and it works sporadically, the weird thing is it tends to only work when I get the car washed, I checked out the connections after it started messing up and everything is fine it's just the camera is crap. This is not a difficult thing to do except it's a bit of a pain in the butt installing the backup camera. If you take your time it'll turn out fine. Oh yeah, the owner's manuals was completely useless.
mr rod he had to move the gear shifter, its finneeee..... plus a loss of $45.... does it really matter... 🤷🏽♂️ plus it looks stock since their all so minimalistic and shit. Might as well hit something else
@@mrrod805 they also have theft lock though if you remove a gm radio made after 1996 it wont work if you try to put it in another car. It will digitally lock up
That's common on 99% of the GM cars. Awake signal for the radio is being send through the communication wire. That's why they don't have power by ignition switch. Got me confused couple of times ;)
I think it's funny that it has bluetooth, but has RCA jacks in the back. Reminds me of hooking up my first 8-track player. LOL Want something like it in the 98 Ranger. Can a back-up camera be connected to most aftermarket stereos now days?
The reason you needed to run the external switched power was this year car used the canbus to turn the radio on and off. It's how the radios on these would stay on even after you switched off the car until you opened the drivers door. They make a canbus compatible harness, but it's much more expensive and for a cheap car like this, what you did is fine. The switched 12v line draws almost no power so tapping into the hvac controls is fine, the radio draws its main power from the yellow wire. There is one minor drawback here, depending on the car, (IIRC this is the case with this era Malibu) the warning dings/turn signal clicks are sometimes sent as commands via the canbus to the OEM radio and played out of the speakers, so doing what you did here you lose them, the more expensive canbus harness adapters have a little speaker in them to make the noises.
Tried this about 10 years ago when a cheap chinese touch screen device was 200 and one of those plugs was 60. Only alternative was a pioneer or blaupunkt head unit for 7-800.
Also the parking brake wire needs to see a ground in order to let video play. It is a safety precaution because when hooked up to the parking brake the video will only play when the parking brake it on. If you just run this wire to straight ground it will allow video to play while driving.
Its just a signal wire, the radio gets its main power through the thicker yellow wire. I even left the stock hvac fuse, so even if there was a spike in current it would just blow that fuse. Now I don’t condone tapping off an existing circuit and adding a larger fuse to accommodate. Thats just asking for a fire..
