I remember my mother driving home with one of these, didn’t realize it didn’t fit into the garage until it was too late. It was repaired about the same time the garage door and frame were fixed. Sold it a month later when she once again forgot it didn’t fit

@Stimpy&Ren I made my own conversion van with a bed in the back. Rear seat heating, etc. When I went to parties and got drunk, just go to bed. I'd go camping with friends and while they were screwing around with tent poles and pegs I'd slide open the side door, pull out the lawn chair and table, DONE lol.
Your video inspired me to seek out my mom's Dodge Ram van. Turns out, her boyfriend (she died 14 years ago) held onto the van for me to get when I was old enough! I didn't know this, like we had discussed it but I didn't think he was really going to keep it and give it to me, but I reached out to him and he's like yeah, come get it! She's in really rough shape but I plan on getting her running and sorted out after the years of neglect. Lots of memories in that van. I bet one of my Disney movies is still in the VCR.

My dad bought someones old "sleeper" van and made it into a budget camper -- before vanlife was "cool." (like in the 70s) My Aunt went through at least 2 if not three of the real conversion vans. (large family) These days she has an Escalade and a Sprinter based camper. What happened to Conversion vans were they were still EXPENSIVE for most people and minivans came along and were cheap. (and they still do tend to be much better equipped for the price than other vehicles - and tend to have big engines too)

True Karens are nosey detectives. They all know what he does for a living, but want to dig their controlling claws into his personal projects. We can't allow people to do what they want on their own property! That might contradict the contrived vision for this neighborhood.
@Greger Holmes Tyler is some kind of promotions director person for Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakhouses. He opens and promotes new stores, and does who knows what else. He's mentioned more than once that his Jeep Gladiator is owned by the company. The internet says he quit Freddy's to focus on youtube and a TV show in 2017, which he did for a year and change, but he came back at some point. Going by remarks he's made in his videos, it sounds like the RU-vid side hussle is now making him enough money to cover a decent amount of his car habit.
Ryan Klapperich according to Social Blade this channel makes nearly $300k per year....I’d say that covers a bit more than a decent amount of his car buying lol

@@altergreenhorn - that's fine, but OP is right. Those are small incandescent bulbs. You can tell by the color and the intensity. Source - i own this van's clone, and have been looking to convert to led's. It's honestly not really worth it unless you already have everything apart, for those interested.
I figured it was that or neon bulbs. But you could swap 'em out pretty easily I'm sure! edit: Ooops missed the comment above, maybe it's a lot of work to get to. But yeah white LEDs were not practical at the time. Red or green, sure.
My friend's parents bought Steph Carse's house and he left thousand of dollar worth of appliance as a gift when they moved in. It sits on a slope, so theres a sliding door in the basement. It was such a cool feature as a kid
As a lover of vans from the 80's and 90's. I gotta say, this van is awesome! I absolutely agree with you that it is indeed a shame that they don't make these anymore.
my dad owned one of these we took it all the way to denmark legoland from sweden when i was like 5 and i too grew up with it theres tons of photos with two of them that he owned, i remember the engine sound as being the best i ever heard.
It could be a mural of Hoovie, Car Ninja and The Wiiiizard, add some thunders in the back and some SFX on each of them depending on their role in the videos.
These were awesome. My parents had 4 kids, and one of these is how we moved about for annual vacations to the Florida Gulf coast. We called ours "the space bus."
The ladder is for sitting on top when you’re in the infield at the Indy 500...because that’s these vans were perfect for. Also perfect for getting the clap...don’t ask.
When I was a kid, my brother's friend's mom used to have one of the vans that was maroon. I remember riding home from the mall in it and watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch on ABC's TGIF. The TV had an antenna and we could barley see anything because it got terrible reception. But it was so cool being able to watch TV while we were driving. I mean sure, watching a video in a vehicle wasn't that big of a deal, even then, but watching a new episode of the same live show that I would've been watching if I was home that night, was pretty cool.

This brings back so many memories. My dad used to own 4 of these around 15 years ago. We used to live in Saudi arabia back then used to make round trips of 2000 kms from riyadh to makkah. It used to be so big and comfy. I am definitely going to purchase one of these again. And yeah my dad's the coolest 🤙
Way back in 1992, when I was 15, my mum, over here in the UK, and my Aunt and Uncle, in Canada, decided, to go for broke and have a once in a lifetime family holiday, where we would basically spend the entire summer touring the USA. The vehicle my Uncle chose for this amazing trip was a 1985 Dodge Ram 250, with a long wheelbase Starcraft conversion. I remember being met by my Uncle at Toronto Airport in this behemoth, and seeing inside for the first time, I thought it was incredible. Very similar inside to Tyler's, but in dark blue velour. We spent the following 8 weeks going from Ontario, across the border into New York State, then across the country, down the west coast to California, across to Texas, then up the middle back to Canada. It was an incredible trip, through an amazing country, made all the more memorable by being in this unbelievably comfortable vehicle, which we ended up covering 10,800 miles in. Two things that always stick in my mind were, driving this beast through San Francisco and even with it's big V8, the thing really struggling to haul it's 3.5 ton bulk up those streets. The other thing, was being left alone in our motel one night, whilst in New Orleans, I realized my Uncle had left the van keys in the room. So being a stupid, car crazy teenager, and a sucker for the sound of that engine, I decided, in my wisdom, to take the van around the car park. I spent the next 10 mins flooring it, from one side to the other, having great fun. The thing then stalled on me and refused to restart, so I began to shit myself, as if I'd been caught by my elders, I dread to think what they'd have done to me. Thankfully it did eventually start and I put it back. It was only later I realized what an incredibly stupid thing it was to do, with such a large vehicle in a tight space, plus with very little driving experience, I'm lucky I didn't hit any one or any thing! I would love to know if that van still exists. I remember my uncle got it at a really good price, and I think he even managed to make a profit on it, after putting all those extra miles on it. Anyway, sorry for the rambling story, but, for anyone who's still reading, as you can imagine, seeing Hoovies new acquisition really stirred up some memories. I actually have a photo of ours, parked outside my Aunt and Uncles house, in front of me now. I wish I could share it with you here. Sadly my Aunt Jay is no longer with us, having succumbed to breast cancer, all the way back in 2001. She was a lovely person, and I still miss her. It makes memories like that trip even more precious.
Hi Mathew, Your story resonated with me and inspired me to share a similar experience.... I live in South Africa and after studying civil engineering at the University of Cape Town (UCT) I embarked on a two year road trip adventure in the States in ‘94-‘95 with my best friend who had just completed his BCom degree. We bought an ‘81 GMC Vandura 2500 custom van fitted with the Chevy 350 and 3 speed auto transmission. We bought it in Ft Lauderdale and paid $1200 for it. It was solid and rust free but obviously a bit rough and well worn around the edges. It came complete with velour captains chairs with fold down armrests, a rear bench seat which folded down into a very comfortable bed, mood strip lighting and small directional spotlights at the rear which all miraculously still worked and were controlled by this hilarious big roof mounted console above the rear view mirror. The switches were big oversized orange units which illuminated when depressed. It also had a front AC and a separate rear AC unit which predictably did not work. The walls were lined with blue shag carpeting which was OK and the big smoked glass side windows were fitted with curtains which were faded, but after being washed were OK. The shag carpet on the floor was shot and rather dodgy looking so we went to a carpet store and bought an off-cut of heavy duty office type loop pile blue carpeting for $10 and recarpeted the floor ourselves in a rather crude fashion. It made the interior look a whole lot better and because we simply laid the thick new carpet over the old, it had the added benefit of acting like an extra layer of soundproofing - believe it or not it made it a lot quieter inside at highway speeds. It was mechanically sound apart from a power steering pump that whined and wheezed when you turned the wheel and provided zero assistance and a noisy valve lifter. I bought a new PS pump at Walmart for $30, PS fluid, Mobil One full synthetic engine oil, 8 spark plugs, engine coolant, a new thermostat and an oil, air and fuel filter. Total cost for these spares and fluids was around $80 if I recall correctly. The chap at Walmart was kind enough to set the plug gaps for me after consulting his service books. He also advised me on the correct ratio of water/coolant for the radiator. Borrowing some tools from one of the many awesome local friends we had made I replaced the PS pump, which was easy, replaced the PS fluid and then did the rest of the service items including disconnecting the bottom radiator hose and flushing out the radiator and engine by inserting a garden hose into the filling cap. I was amazed at the muck that came out of the radiator and engine whilst flushing it clean. When I drained the engine oil it was like thick black treacle so who knows when last if had been changed. The auto choke would sometimes get stuck and she would fast idle so I removed the air cleaner and sprayed the throttle linkages on the outside of the carb with a can of lubricating spray. After all my work was done which took an afternoon I climbed into the plush -but rather worn -velour captains chair, inserted the square (GM) ignition key and she fired up immediately. With my hand gently on the wheel I turned it and Voila I had beautiful smooth, quiet power assisted steering again. The engine sounded notably quieter and smoother although I could still hear the lifter but not as loudly as before. After 500 miles of driving the lifter sound disappeared completely and she idled softly like a kitten. Over a two year period we drove our van over 80 000 miles around the beautiful USA, from the very hot desert regions in the SW through freezing snow filled winter weather in Colorado and Kansas and it never let us down - once! What a legend of a vehicle it was! We ended our trip in Austin Texas where I lived for a few months - fabulous city. Just before heading home I sold our faithful van for $2000 to two young guys who believed they were getting the deal of deal of the century. I remember watching them high-five each other as they walked up to old faithful…not gonna lie it was rather emotional for me watching them “drive off into the sunset” with our beloved GMC. she served us well and i made an $800 dollar profit after those 80 000 trouble free miles. They don't make 'em like they used to. America, her wonderful people, and her good old Detroit autos will always have a very special place in my heart. Take care and God bless
One of my best friend's mom had one really similar to this in the early 90s. It was great on road trips. Twelve-year-old me thought it was awesome to be able to watch VHS in the car.
my siblings and I definitely wore out a couple tapes during annual pilgrimages from upstate NY to Myrtle Beach, towing a camper. But traveling long distances was the ONLY time we were allowed to use the TV, unlike kids today that have something on displays in the back while riding with mom running errands. We also had a second stereo in the back (only wired to headphone jacks) so we didn't have to listen to mom and dad's music on those trips, ironically we now listen to the music we hated back then..
I live in Belgium and a buddy of mine has one of these, a giant V8 tank with blue leather interior and a flip down flatscreen TV in the back. The ride was like nothing I've ever been in... comfy, torqy, quiet, the list goes on... his is worth about 30k euro's tho, they're really expensive over here and insurance/taxes are out of this world for something like this
Taxes shouldn't be all too expensive if it's before 1992 or you can register it as a camper. Insurance is quite ridiculous if you have any kind of horsepower but should still be manageable if you're an experienced driver with a clean accident record. The fuel consumption is a killer though, even with an LPG conversion, and forget about parking it pretty much anywhere you actually want to drive to.
@@Candisa I pay €2000 insurance per year for my 1.2l 3 cylinder 82hp 5 year old Peugeot... On top of that another €500 taxes, maintenance, etc... On top another around €600 in fuel... Add it up and my little slow Peugeot crossover cost me about €3100 to drive every year, if you think that is cheap then you're out of your mind lol

My aunt and uncle had one of these and I have so many memories hooking up the Sega Genesis and playing the crap out of Zombies Ate My Neighbors and NBA Jam.
My mom bought a Dodge one in 1982. We went everywhere in it. When I got old enough to start driving, I drove it to school every day. I was quite popular in high school because of it. I had a Metallica tapestry in one window and Iron Maiden in the other. Those were the days. Partied my ass off in that thing.
My dad had two of these when I was a kid, the first one caught on fire while a mechanic was servicing it, and my dad used the insurance money to get another one, while he did mostly use it to deliver medicine to hospitals during the day, at night my sister and I would hope in to go pickup my mom from work with my dad. The point of this is, this Van has a special place in my heart, I absolutely loved the feeling of being at home but not really being at home, this was my favorite thing my dad ever bought, anywhere you went felt like a vacation or a road trip, even if it was just to McDonald's, my dream is to one day be able to afford getting one of these for my mom and dad, they're in their 50's now, and I'm about to turn 30 in February, the point of all of this is, the memories!! This is the first vehicle I ever drove, my dad put me in his lap and let me steer it, I would love to surprise them with one, I just can't afford it right now, and everything Hoovie said in this video is absolutely TRUE!! (P.S. I broke my sister's finger while flattening the bed) while my dad was sitting in the driver seat waiting for my mom to get off work at 11pm in Chicago downtown, and then immediately rushed my sister and the rest of us to the ER, all while I was in tears, and telling them it was all an accident!! The memories Hoovie, the memories!! I can see you have a lot of them as well!! Great van, Congratulations on the purchase!! ONE DAY!! I'll be able to afford one too! My dad came to this country with only $40 in his pocket, he's busted his ass for years to give my sisters and I the life we have today, if he can do it, I can do it too!

You've made me literally cry in a good way. Memories of my mom and our travels from Greyhounds to a 75 Chevy Cargo Van, completely homemade/tricked out by my mom and stepdad for summer travels because we were poor and then in 84 we had a Ford Conversion for more fun memories. Thanks so much for appreciating these beautiful vans. If you can believe it, my mom gave a neighbor our 84 Ford van for 500 bucks, in pristine condition. I wish I could find one I could afford to travel around the US but am disabled and can't afford them now. Maybe I could do a crowdfund and some pan-handling and save up for one with what they cost these days I'll be dead by the time I get it. I'm buying a lottery ticket tonight now, fingers crossed. Why wouldn't they be? Russian Oleg Losev invented the LED in 1927. They were improved upon in 1962 by GE engineer Nick Holonya Jr. and others. These are the ones we use today.
@@douglasdixon524 White LEDS did not exist commercially until the early 2000's. Back in the 90's, those would have been filament bulbs. I have my doubts about those being retrofitted, they look exactly like the bulbs in the conversion vans my friends parents had back in the day. The color and spacing of the strip lights is spot on. For someone willing to use the fan for vacations etc, it would be worth it IMO to install LED retrofits. Those filaments will start burning out very soon unless they had been replaced by a previous owner.
If my cat wasn’t so full of anxiety he probably sleep in that center consul while I drove. Everything about this van screams perfection to me I just wish I could afford it right now.
You can I’ve seen videos of people buying this van for 300$ & they was nice vans just been sitting for awhile, I jus bought one for 1000$ from a friend mines a really nice one jus like this one only thing the clear coat is peeling it’s so nice no dents no rust & never been wrecked all original runs great 200,000 miles its. 1991 same same exact van as this one inside out but mines blue!

Dude I swear you sound just like me talking about how badass these vans are I've had 2 a 91 and a 95 both high tops and the 95 was the chevy G20 explorer package top of the line leather LEDs everywhere running boards with 8 running lights on both sides 2 sky lights and and electric sunroof my rear seat was a 3 piece couch so it made a full size bed that was actually pretty comfortable I do have to say the new vans are amazing Yes the are just like limos but still awesome they just don't have all the outside accessories like the 80s and 90s ones had These vehicles literally are the most comfortable and completely underrated

Chevys from the late 80's early 90's is amazing. My buddy has a mid 90's Chevy suburban and I sat in those seats and I was genuinely impressed as to how comfortable it is.

Yeah, hundreds of people are youtubing their adventures on van life. Cruising around taking in the sites. Now with walmart letting you park your rv overnight for free, you don't even have to pay for over nighting.
I have a 1996 Ford Econoline with a 351 W engine. It has 430,000 miles on it and it's still running strong. This was one of the best engines ever made. I was disappointed when Ford stopped making the Econoline, and I don't like the newer Ford Transit vans. My next high top conversion van will be a Chevy Express or a GMC Savana because it's getting harder to find a low mileage Econoline.
I remember back in the late 80's sitting in my friends conversion van doing hot knives with hashish and listening to Metallica's Kill Em All tape. Oh, how awesome were the 80's.
Circa 1994 we were driving down route 95 from Baltimore to Washington, coming home from a championship lacrosse game win. Six or Seven 12 year olds packed in this exact van with my buddy's Dad driving. Being young and dumb- we started dropping brand new lacrosse balls out of the window. I'll never forget to this day, his Dad turns around and screams "What the hell are you boys doing?" Silence. "Those are brand new lacrosse balls!" 😂
