I Bought The Most Reviewed Knife Sharpener On Amazon.
With over 16,000 reviews I knew I had to try out this knife sharpener. And see if it actually works. I tried to sharpen 3 different knives. A cheap kitchen knife, a expensive spyderco manix 2 with s110v steel, and a knife I made using 1084 steel. Will this knife sharpener actually work? Also, what is a GOOD alternative to this cheap, pull through, carbide knife sharpener?

Have you come across the mad edge sharpener? I've seen it in a few other knife making videos and ended up getting one. I love it. It has digital markers do you know what degree angle your sharpening at. I couldn't sharpen for damn too begin with so this setup saved a few of my knives from well... me. It's a little pricey but for someone like me, it's damn near fool proof.

could you do a video on how to make a knife out of a file with only a bench grinder? In one of your vids you said it could be done, but I can't really figure it out. Also, if/when I make one (out of a file), can I temper it right after brushing it up with a wire wheel, instead of waiting until I've cut out the shape of the knife? wouldn't that make it easier to make the knife?

Hi! Thanks for the video, I have this same sharpener at home and agree its only for relatively soft kitchen knife steels. I was wondering if you could do a video on stuff like homemade whetstones and using rocks, cement surfaces and maybe ceramic surfaces as DIY whetstones and how much the grit of the surface matters, etc? Proper whetstones are very expensive over here and local whetstones are mostly good for carpentry tools and stuff. Even the king double sided whet stones cost 10 times more than the local stuff we have here, so they are pretty expensive. I would love to have your feed back on this matter.

That's why I wont buy any pull through sharpener, they make the edge look like a hacksaw blade. I have a bunch of stones and a couple of Diamond steels. The stones are for creating the edge I want, and the steels are for keeping it. I tell everyone who comes over for dinner to NOT lick the knives when eating...might just be the last meal they taste. Don't drop sharp knives on your toe just after you've sharpened them, they cut tendons...my toe doesn't bend at the second joint anymore. Yet, I still have a knife fetish...HHMMM!

These are not meant to sharpen knives dulled to that point. They work well enough for most home users looking to quickly try and hone an edge instead of spending time to sharpen it properly. I've used similar "sharpeners" as a person that cooks regularly. It's really meant to help with an edge that is sort of still there

Thank you so much for making videos that educate consumers on what NOT to buy. I have no idea why these cheap products get such great ratings. I spend a lot of money on my knives, and it would only take one really bad knife sharpener to destroy them. I have always been very fascinated with knives and I have only recently started to seriously educate myself about them. Videos like yours are extremely helpful. I had no idea how much there was to learn, But from what I have learned so far, I know there is a lot more to sharpening your knives then most people realize. You really have to know what you're doing or things can go drastically wrong, Just like any other skill, Educate yourself and practice, practice, practice... Thank you so much! ❤
@jkirschy
@jkirschy Год назад
They get great ratings because they are simple to use (short learning curve) and work well enough for the average person who. They will take a cheap, dull pocket knife or kitchen knife and make it sharp enough to do the sorts of work the average person needs. That doesn't mean they produce the most amazing edge ever, just that they'll put a working edge on a knife. Remember these aren't aimed at the person who goes out and spends $100, $200, or more on a pocket knife or chef's knife. They're aimed at the person who buys a $1, $5, or $10 knife at Walmart, Dollar Tree, or the corner gas station only to find that it doesn't have an amazing edge.

I have never actually used this specific sharpener, but similar sharpeners have the course cutting blades ground at a slight angle, so that they only cut from one direction... It appeared to me that you needed to hold the sharpener in your left hand and then draw towards you. Unless this sharpener is different, you were basically trying to use a drill bit in reverse.

I actually have a few pull throughs sharpeners and they work decently well for quick edge maintenance, when used properly. At least better than you're demonstrating. The only two real points are as follows: 1. These are meant for maintaining an edge, not edge repair or reprofiling 2. DO NOT APPLY LOTS OF DOWNWARD FORCE, just barely pressing on it with your index finger is enough The biggest problem I see is that the instructions on the box are never clear enough as they try to keep it short and simple to sell the ease of use. Everyone I've seen using these things, and who eventually give up on them, reef on the knife as they pull it through. In my experience pull through sharpeners can produce a proper shaving edge. It will never be as good as learning to sharpen with proper stones but for a lot of, if not most, people it's plenty good enough. I wasn't a knife enthusiast, it's what I used for years before finally getting the hang of using a stone just a few years ago. Granted my only experience was with a pocket knife made from 8Cr13MoV (i have no idea what that even means, is it relatively soft or hard?) but it was my EDC at the time. The edge was still clean after years of using just this type of sharpener on it, not all ragged as your examples here. I think the key really is to just use them frequently and pull gently. Like give it a few a passes once a week type of thing.
@jkirschy
@jkirschy Год назад
8cr13mov is a decent, budge, Chinese knife steel. Its typically hardened to 57-59 Rockwell C, which isn't soft, but isn't hard either. A lot of times you'll see it compared to Aus-8/440B. As for your point about people using too much pressure... Yeah... That's something that people just don't seem to understand.
@MrHeavychevy86

I just bought this sharpener too. It was great for my old stainless steel kitchen knives. The “V” cut out on the bottom of the sharpener goes on the edge of the table that .your sharpening on. Yes it make a rough edge, but using the fine side, tilting it to either side just a tiny bit, will work. It took a while to figure this out. These knives were going to be tossed out. Now I can actually use them again. Tr.y it again, using it a little differently. You might be surprised. I like it cause it’s small enough to carry out camping or for picnics. I am well pleased with it. The only real down size, some people says the sharpener doesn’t last as long as some would like. That is expected, it has tiny sharpening blades.

I use one of these on a little Kershaw burst and it's pretty much worn out at this point and does not get it nearly as sharp as a whetstone. You can see that I've cut into the steel portion but the ceramic area is still going strong. That being said it's kept the knife sharp for many years and I don't have to fuss with the whetstones.

My stepdad was the head chef of several 3 and 4 star restaurants over the years. One time at a family gathering on Thanksgiving, he was asked to carve the turkey... With nothing to work with, but their BS kitchen knives. We both laughed and he shared an old chef's trick with me. He grabbed a quality coffee cup from the cabinet, and in a very short time, had an awesome cutting edge, from the bottom of the cup. I still use this sometimes for a quick edge restoration sometimes. Even on the high dollar Forschner kitchen knives he blessed me with. That said, these quickie sharpeners do serve a purpose in the field, when butchering a deer and you happen to hit bone.

I have some cheap ($5 for a 4-pack) steak knives that I sharpened with an Accusharp for years. That tool is shaped differently, so you drag it over the knife instead of the other way around, but uses the same exact carbide blade principle as the Most Reviewed. It produces what I'd call a "serviceable edge," but just as you showed, that edge is really gnarly. The edge also doesn't hold worth beans, so you have to redo it very often. Then, when I finally shelled out about $35 or so for a pocket knife, I decided to get a stone so I wouldn't have that kind of an edge on the better knife (it's definitely far better than a $1.25 knife). Needless to say, I practiced on those super-cheapies first, after watching some of your videos. I can report that it did not take a huge amount of steps to get rid of the crappy old edge, no belt sander or any of that. But I did have to swipe the practice knives a gajillion times, and when I looked at the finished product, I had indeed obliterated the Accusharp profile and made a new one without even consciously intending to. The pocket knife (never Accusharped), in comparison, took seven swipes on the stone to get the job done.

I have this sharpener and have used it on a regular basis for months; and I still do: I would not exchange it it for another, and I have in fact given up using my rather expensive diamond whetstone. I am a passionate cook, and cook all kinds of food from many countries, and so have many knives; I use this sharpener on all my knives except one, which is a santoku given to me as a gift by a Japanese family, with my name in Chinese characters engraved upon it. I cannot use it on that knife because the steel of that knife is much too hard; however, I definitely do use it on my Porsche Design Chroma knives made of high-quality 18/10 Japanese 301 stainless steel, and it works perfectly well on them. I also use it on knives I use for making sashimi (not special Japanese ones, but more than adequate for using on all kinds of fish to make good sashimi and sushi, which I am excellent at making.) In addition I use it on my Chinese cleaver, with which I can cut most bones with a single chop. Plus I use it on the knife I use to cut meat off bones, the kind butchers use. The sharpener works well for ALL these knives!!! All I do in addition to using this sharpener is hone the knives on a honing steel I got cheaply on Amazon which claims to have diamonds embedded on it (though I can't actually see them). I FIND THE KNIVES SHARPENED BY THIS INEXPENSIVE SHARPENER PERFECTLY SHARP ENOUGH FOR C.O.O.K.I.N.G, WHICH IS ALL I AM INTERESTED IN THEM DOING! I am not a BARBER, you understand, but a COOK. I couldn't care less if my knives can shave my hair or not!

I don't understand how someone as good with knives as you wouldn't know that you aren't supposed to force the knife into the v like you're trying to cut through it. That's why it says to pull it through, not grind down the knife on the v.
@OUTDOORS55
@OUTDOORS55 4 года назад
Because in order to sharpen you have to remove steel. Exactly how you remove the steel is important. Grinding it off with carbide (like this sharpener) isn't going to give good results no matter how you do it.
@beefytaquitos
@beefytaquitos 4 года назад
@@OUTDOORS55 But the amount of force you put into sharpening a blade is one of the most important things to sharpening as far as I'm aware. If you put your body weight onto a knife while using a sharpening stone you could fuck it up pretty bad as well, could you not? I can't see how putting undue force onto a tool wouldn't cause excess damage in any case. Granted it would take far longer to sharpen(and might not at all, for some of those blades) but I've used one of that sort(though it's one that was apparently intended for camping/outdoor use, though seems to have the same components) on a semi-sharp cheap-ass knife(she had to get one with a plastic coating -_-) and sure it doesn't get it as sharp as the sharpening stone(necessary for making sushi). But I'll be damned if a minute of woosh-woosh doesn't get it back to more than enough to make dinner with after a couple months of use(or misuse, as in the missus' case). I've never had it damage the knife, but I've always just pulled it through without much extra force on it, which is why I question whether essentially attempting to saw through the device with your knife might have been slightly.... excessive and might have resulted in unnecessarily bad results.

I'm on my second sharpener like this. It lasted about 4-5 months of light everyday use. From experience, just looking at your first knife and using the rough side... you're pushing waaaay to hard. You were taking chunks off of the knife-edge (which still showed in the video after using the fine side). The fine side. which I use almost exclusively, should be easier strokes too. You can actually feel the smoothing of the blade and the straightening move towards the tip of each stroke until it slides like glass. This is what I use this sharpener for,.evening after honing, I will perform a few strokes through the ceramic, just to make sure the edge is straight. As for using as an exclusive sharpener... no! For in-between maintenance, it is fantastic.. It is what it is. Try again with lighter strokes and I believe you'll get a lot better results.

The blades on this sharpener seem to be on the coarse side tungsten carbide, which just rips the softer steel off like peeling a banana. The white fine part of the sharpener seems like it “ might “ be ceramic? Wholly agree that the Lansky ceramic sharpening kit is worlds ahead of this device, if you value your knives. Good video. Thanks Mike.

Some of the sporting good stores in my area sell something similar for about three dollars and change, most are green and round(ish) with the two notches on opposite sides. I found that these sharpeners are handy for use on cheap machetes. I like Tramontina machetes, they run about $8 to $12 in the stores in my area. I have about half a dozen stashed in various places. They come with a terrible edge, but they're cheap and they are effective once you sharpen them. These sharpeners work well on them, and the angle they establish seems to be effective and pretty durable on a machete. By virtue of how they work, they kind of push minor nicks in the blades back into place, but they sort of dish out the blade if the nick is really bad. They don't rust, and they're cheaper, lighter, and more pocket friendly than a file, but I'd never use one on a traditional knife. In my experience, the fatter the blade and the softer the metal, the better these things work. But in case you didn't watch the whole video, don't use these things on your good knives. Or your so so knives. Or really any knife you plan to keep. You'd probably be better off using the bottom of a coffee mug.

You should make a distinction between "easy to grind" and "easy to sharpen." Many of the softer steels which are easy to grind can be difficult to sharpen as removing the burr from these steels can often be quite a challenge. Many of the harder steels which are difficult to grind (at least without proper abrasives) are actually easier to sharpen since they are much less prone to burr formation, and the burr that is formed is often easier to remove.

Sharp 'n Easy is the only good pull through sharpener. It's small, cheap and it has two round ceramic rods instead of a carbide sharpener. It has a fine and a coarse side and both are ceramic. If you need something for the kitchen or on the go to get a fast edge, that's the one to get.

I got an Ikea knife sharpener at CNY 39 which equals to USD 6 roughly, and I have several kitchen knives at around USD 10 for each one. The combination works so great that I can maintain all these knives in great shape with so little effort. They are as sharp as very expensive Japanese sushi knives and worth only 1/10 - 1/20 of Japanese knives. I think this amazon sharpener would have much better performance if you only use the ceramic rods, most of this kind of fixed-angle sharpeners are equipped with hard metal blades, grindstone rods, and ceramic rods, usually only ceramic rods are useful on daily kitchen works. My Ikea sharpener only has grindstone rods but it works just fine enough.

So, a $6 sharpener isnt really made to reprofile blades. You are trying to get it to do too much. This is generally made for kitchen knives that chop veggies that eventually get a little but dull and you need to get it back to being able to slice veggies. Its made for people who dont really know how to sharpen, and dont really want to know how to sharpen. And for that, its great. Ill grab some knives from my friends, personally sharpen them to approx 20 degrees, then hand them one of these sharpeners just to keep their knives funtional enough so they dont pester me anymore.
