I Broke my Backhoe, Can it be Fixed?

I built a custom skid steer style quick attach for my old backhoe. It failed in a pretty obvious way. Time to break out the welder and cutting torch and see if I can fabricate version two to be any stronger.

A little of my history. I'm probably 35 years your senior. A retired Engineer with a brother also a retired engineer. A son that is engineer and a licensed Michigan mechanic. A good friend that is a certified Welder. I watch every time you state you are NOT an expert. In several cases I have thought I would do things different. Also after you turn 50+ you have more money and less time on this earth. For 4 years I borrowed a CAT 279D so I know they make skid steer quick attach parts that will hold up to a 6000#+ lift. I lost my access to the 279. My current back up is a JD2010 Industrial, which is comparable to your 555. I need to put a new bucket on it so I' m actively following your quick attach project. I need to build a frame for some heavy duty forks, which I have. I will follow your build of your new forks. (I have in the past picked up a 4500# car chained to the 2010 bucket). I also need to add an additional function to my hydraulic system for a grapple on the front. You you provide a lot of ideas.

My beliefs are you can’t build anything heavy enough, seems like it should be at least 5/8” to 3/4” thick plate! Just my opinion, I’ve built a lot of brackets for industrial and personal use in my 40 years of welding and fabrication! That chisel gun is a MUST when using stick rods! I don’t like to present my opinions Mike, while you’re fabricating your projects! I’m not one to tell anyone what to do, because people take things the wrong way! I’m just here to watch your channel my friend! 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Great repair upgrade Mike, there is no 'scrap steel" it just hasn't be repurposed yet, if you can find a 3 ton up loading board and forks from a wrecked forklift it would be simple enough to weld up another quick attach kit for the 555, I'm still waiting for polished timber floorboards for the cab 😊

Hey Capt. Just a suggestion if ur going to be cutting and pushing dirt like that, a cutting edge on your bucket will pay dividends even a used one… say off an old dozer that Clint at C&C might have…. (Modified in the Captains way) and maybe a new tooth or two on the bucket… couple bucks spent now will save you heaps in the future…

Forgive me for doing the "Mr. Safety" thing, but ever since I saw a welding safety video from the Australian RU-vidr/Auto Expert John Cadogan (who is quite the salty charactor) I am totally paranoid about aersol cans being near any welding or cutting projects (which I did ALL THE TIME). I saw the hornet spray when you had the torch cutting and developed a tick. I get you are a fireman and probably well aware of what are pretty small odds of it going boom, but I feel compelled to say something anyway. Keep on keeping on my friend.

I bought a Piranha tooth bar to bolt on to my OC46 loader bucket. I think it was well worth it, for what I wanted. It has worked great for clearing brush or digging dirt. Pull 2, 3/4 inch bolts off and I'm back to a smooth edge when I want a snow clearing bucket, or rough grading loose dirt.

@markpashia7067
@markpashia7067 6 месяцев назад
I did not grow up on a farm but I did visit when the beans were ready to pick for fifty cents a heaping bushel. And I heard that word a lot in everyday life about sixty years ago. I like it. Lots of other fun words and slogans too. One favorite was "write with Eversharp" when the appropriate word was "correct" but the common word was "right". Also the old Timex slogan of "takes a licking and keeps on ticking" kind of like most of Mike's projects. I am paying for all that stoop labor sixty years ago with lots of aches and pains but four bits was a lot of money back in those days. Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar. And the coins were 90% silver. Real hard currency.
@markpashia7067
@markpashia7067 6 месяцев назад
Also remember that farmer paying me in real US Dollars and silver certificates. By real US Dollars I mean before the Federal Reserve existed so they were not FED notes. The silver certificates looked counterfeit to me so I had to look them up to be sure they were real. This was in the mid sixties and he was paying me with bills from before the first world war. Always wondered how much he had in the walls of that old house.

I am helping a friend build a house, he rented a skid steer to help with grading. He had a man operating the machine that is a big fan of back dragging. Well, I hopped on the machine to move some things and discovered the pin no longer engaged the bucket but was doing just like yours, just the tip. It made it infuriating to use the bucket, the bucket would jump off constantly. The lot there is mostly sand and Indian pottery (that is another story) and had locked the pin from sliding inside of its shaft. The repair involved some hammering and lots of grease to the zero they did not know existed. My advice, keep the pin greased well as well. Thanks for the videos.

Cap’n it’s fishin’ season! And… you’ve inspired me. You see, bass and crappie are filleted. But, in the creeks around here, we don’t catch very many of those. Instead we mostly catch bluegill, sun perch and carp. Cleaning those requires descaling. We do that by taking a knife or fancy descaling rasp and scrape the scales off. That is a slimy, smelly and arduous task. Especially when your grandson is helping you fill your stringer… because for him, no fish is too small to turn into dinner. Just imagine how much more enjoyable our fishing experience would be if we had one of those needle descalers to help us clean our catch. I’m spitballing here but, me thinks we can cut our descaling time in half! Thanx for the idea… I’ll let you know how well it works. PS: is it too early to send you a bottle of Elderberry Wine to mash on the nose of the yacht when she launches???
