I broke my leg. I was lucky - this happened at home, but could easily have happened out in the remote bush on a solo trip. So this got me thinking, how do you stay safe when travelling in remote locations? This video is some of my thoughts on this topic.

On the subject of first aid severe bleeding will quickly kill you. If by yourself you may have 15-20 seconds before you lose consciousness with a femoral bleed. Having a tourniquet on the outside of your pack is the first step. It should be properly staged (not in the wrapper) and most importantly you need to know how to put it on yourself in seconds. Good video with lots of great info. Best luck on your recovery.

Mate one piece of advice from when my leg was in a heavy plaster cast for 8 weeks is whenever you are sitting with your leg up, ensure it is vertical and not on a lean towards or more commonly away from your other foot. It can effect your walking, knee and hip many years down the track.
