Waterbased paint is ok for wood, I use it all the time, screw the shelves to the wall with brackets to make it more stable. Great job.

if you feel like the shelves arent sturdy, you can get brackets to put on the 4 frames. underneath. 40 baby brackets would do it.

I can`t help myself but the shelfs are missing an anker to the right side wall (and a few to the back wall)or atleast one diagonal board between 2 vertical boards at the back. The whole unit could one day end up leaning against the water heater.
