Wow, i just got done watching your build of the Academy Dragonfly, and then i found and watched your video here of the PBY5A Catalina. This is a great model and you done tge old bird justice. I also have this model on the shelf. The Cat's were unsung heros of the pacific during WWII. Pilot rescure, long range scouting, casualty evacuation. Sub hunters too. Has a friend of the family back in the San Francisco bay area who flew these aircraft as well as tge naval version of the B-24, flew through out the war as a sub-hunter, he never found a Japanese sub, but bombed a number of their surface ships, he also a dozen or more aircrews mostly along the coast of California or Hawaii. He's gone now. I was glad to have known him. Great piece of work both the model & video.
Thank you Bob that means a lot 👍 I love the Cat’s and would jump at the chance of have a trip in one. Takes a lot of courage to approach a ship that has all of its guns aimed at you. I take my hat off to those guys❤️
I love you video. So it is with not disrespect intended, I must say that, the music, the chapter cards, and your voicemail makes me think I'm watching a WW2 documentary with the voice of a veteran describing the event.
Working on a Wiesel 1 with 20mm autocanon now, it is an AFVclub reboxed Revell kit. It is a super pain to build, ALOT of cleanup, and loads of filling and sanding. Miss My Eduard/Tamiya/Hasegawa kits 😅
Hi, A really well done and finished model. Well done. I have only one small comment and that is nothing to do with the model build. but the base. 2 things there is no wake from the back of the fuselage and also you have the plane moving through the water with static props. If you want it in water an at anchor scenario would be more realistic. Unless you could motorise the props. The engine cowlings and wings look big enough to take 2 small electric motors and the wiring would run through the aircraft and out to the base unseen. To a small battery pack with a simple on off switch. It could be hidden in the base edge. As I said a a really well done build. Your talent is clear to see.
Thank you for the reply it means a lot and your words are very kind. The electric motor isn't something that would interest me but yes you are quite right it could be adapted. Concerning the wake - the idea of the plane was it had just come to stop and was doing the last bob down in the water. I checked many actually photos and very few have the floats actually touching the water at all they seem to be more like stabilises. that said there is one small wake behind the port float as if it had lean to that side briefly before stopping. That said it was pretty much my first diorama so apology if there are things that grate on the eye.
Well done I have been modelling now for 2 year's now even though I am coloured blind I am getting there I have built a few diaramas I have USN PBY -5A I have done a sea scape as a sample and yes I am impressed I have the HMS Bounty 1:110 scale that I will build in the future many thanks
@TheScaleModeler your work is fantastic mate I would love to send you the work I have done in my 2 years, and being coloured blind has not impacted my results
That’s fantastic news it’s an enjoyable build. If you are on Facebook and would like to share photos of your builds or have questions etc please consider join the scale modelers group: 📸 Look at this post on Facebook m.facebook.com/groups/3044682405665731/?ref=share&mibextid=K35XfP
Great work! I have heard that some rich people have bought and refurbished Catalina's and use them as flying campervans. I wish I was that rich. As far as the nose weight is concerned you can buy Tungsten shot (Heavier than lead) and cover it with resin so it wont move or rattle.
Man when I was a teen in the 90s I built one of these in 1/48 scale. Long since lost it as when life carried me elsewhere I had to throw out my old models.
You’re more than welcome and thanks for feeding back it’s really motivating to know that at least a few people have gotten so enjoyment and tips from the videos 👍 new coming soon btw 😉
Fantastic work. Excellent treatment of the photoetched partes. Gives more malleability to the PE parts. Thanks for this excellent video. I love this plane, it's ellegant and has the majestuosity of a swan, when splashdown on the sea.
Great model ... and from a Revell kit. a company I learned to hate many years ago when building model cars. I absolutely cannot put a 1/72 plastic model airplane together now and even the 1/48 P47 I am doing is causing me fits so congrats on working with those tiny bits and pieces too👍👍.
Yes I was shocked as well. I’m using magnifying glasses more and more now. Especially as the camera lens is better than my eyes and when I see the film it can quickly become disappointing. Thank you for feedback see you on next one 👍
Very kind words thank you, true hero’s, it’s extremely brave to fly slow moving aircraft with enemy fire popping all around you. Model making whilst enjoyable also create moments of reflection and appreciation 👍
I just remembered - I built one of these kits in the mid-1970's! 'Bought it at the nearby K-Mart store and just glued the blue plastic parts together with that awful, gooey, toxic Testor's paint in the metal tube. "Mom... model-building always gives me a headache." "Oh, it's just the glue, honey." Good times.
Sweet memories and amazingly you’re still here to tell the tale 😉 maybe they made people a bit harder back then 😂. Thanks for commenting I hope you subscribed and liked 👍 Take it easy Tim 👍
When I saw Revell and Fantastic in the same sentence I thought don’t see that often, but it’s the Academy tooling so that makes sense lol. TBH it shows that Revell can produce kits without flash, so it must just be their moulds have it built in 😂 Nice build, and well done for preserving with that tiny PE, I tend to leave the really tiny bits off as I’m getting older!
Yes there’s is certainly a contradiction in the sentence 😂 The PE is a labour of love for sure . Revell do produce more budget friendly kits and normally there is a price to pay in the sense of losing details. Horses for courses I guess
@@TheScaleModeler I often use them as practice models for technique and then give them away to people because the investment is low enough and saves potentially ruining a more expensive kit! Like you, I love the PBY so I may actually buy one of these. I’m going to check out your water scape video too, that looked awesome
My biggest mistake when building this kit was attaching the wing before painting. Oh, and I forgot to attach the wing struts... 😅 Lovely job you've done btw 👍
Thanks for sharing your build and your techniques. I have been washing quite abit of modelling videos and this is the first time I have seen anyone annealing the photoetch to make it easier to work on. Thanks for the tip! I also like the way you have presented the video by indicating each stage of the build. Will be watching more of your videos. I have just subscribed.👍👍👍
Hey Scale Modeler. You just got another subscriber. I like this build as well. I like how you do your video's, I have a lot of fun just watching. Thank you Sir.
Dont go down the rabbit hole by over doing it as you get more experience...the way you weathered that plane is in my view excellent and beleivable... nice work 👍
One of my favorite planes, from the black cats in the Pacific to the Cats of the Double Sunrise, is just something about looking at them or watching them fly. Handshake CAVU
Thank you mine too, not a Skyrider but I have a build video coming of the 1/72 Dragonfly A37-B by Academy which also served in Vietnam war won’t be for a while but 100% will be coming Thank you for feedback 👍
David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Sunday, 30 June, 2024-one year and one month since you originally had posted this video!). Quite a subtle, effectively evocative paint job you have presented us here, sir. Thank you for showing us your handiwork. Even more, the Academy (now the Revell Germany) 1:72nd-scale kit of the Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina U.S. Navy Patrol Bomber-as well as scout, search & rescue, anti-submarine, etc.-looks right better than I had expected. As inexperienced as you tell us you are, you do yourself credit with your deftness in execution. You might try this kit again (or the noticeably larger Revell Monogram 1:48th-scale model), though this time, painting the fuselage in various blacks, to suggest the myriad tonal variations indicating the gradual wear to the camouflage, the play of the scant, cloud-covered moonlight, etc., will give you (and us!) a night-prowling U.S. Navy “Black Cat(alina)” that proved fatally unlucky to all their enemy combatants who in the dark carelessly had crossed paths with her . . . . .
Hi David Thank you for your interesting comment and thoughts. Yes I would do this again but 1/48 is way to big for me - it would be a while though as I have a large stash to get through - Take it easy Kind regards Jim
The rivet detail blew me away and you know it really needs to be there as when you look at period photos you can clearly see it. Glad you enjoyed the build - go for it 👍
There is a PBY at the museum near me that they recovered from the interior of our state (Alaska) even being as damaged as she is due to time and weather still a gorgeous aircraft
Great video, but second the comment about the edits... i really appreciate the honesty about the issues such as the loose guns and ball bearing issues. It made me realise how stressful this wonderful hobby can be. I usually find halfway through i hate the model im working on and want nothing more to finish it so i can start another. But when it is all done all i can remember is the positive experiences 😂
Yes, seeing issues that come up or present themselves and the individual model maker’s solution(s) is great. At the end it is the enjoyment of the process and results. If you enjoy it, then other opinions do not matter, unless it is truly constructive, positive, criticism. When others express enjoyment for you, all the better. Great work, I learned from this, thanks.
Too true. Many model-related RU-vidrs seem to never have a single issue! Yeah, right. I almost never use etch brass: it makes the model twice as difficult and sometimes makes it very slightly better. This Academy model has been released under a few brands: Wolfpack released the Academy plastic and decals for either a Coastal Command Catalina that shadowed the Bismarck, or a USN machine that spotted the Japanese fleet at Midway. Hard to get the kits but cool subjects.
Whilst I’d love to fly in one of these I think that’s one situation where I’d change my mind. Seriously though the guys who flew these under fire were truly brave heroes. Full kudos to your father - thank you for sharing 👍
I've built this model a couple of times when it was still under the Academy brand. I really loved this kit. One version I did was the PBY from the movie "Always". There were a lot of modifications required but the end result was worth the effort. Draw Decal offers an excellent decal set of the "Fire Eaters" PBY from the movie. If you ever get a chance, I would give this version a go. You've built a beautiful model and I really enjoyed how how you produced this video. Great Job.!
Beautiful decals! Yep just checked it out- thank you 🙏 you have got my mind thinking 🤔 I’ve just found this you maybe interested; www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235069008-revell-148-catalina-always-super-catalina-conversion/ Thanks for commenting much appreciated
My home is LONG ISLAND, NY. At Farmingdale Republic Airport, there's an air power museum they are currently restoring a Catalina PBY! Regards, Andy, Annmarie's husband.
Thank you I thought I’d share it and also it gives me a reminder. In lots of ways I build it twice one actually and second through editing the filming. The fact people like them is humbling, amazing and unbelievably. I have had RU-vid channels in the past they’re pretty easy to setup and I enjoy the editing of the videos. All in all just the excuse I need to do the things I enjoy 😉 technically just over a year but I watched some good modellers who shared their skills 👍
When you do something like the front wheel covers put little bits of flat plastic on the inside with some sticking out under the doors for door support.
That’s great news thank you 😊 The lead is a good idea I have lead strip they use for aquarium plants so I will have to try that next time- thanks for the heads-up 👍
Super , I've one in my stash it's the Academy one . I like the blue colours not the black, the water affects are great so please do show how you did this process I'm still learning myself after a number of years, great work again and keep it up. 👍.
Excellent job! Just one minor critique is that there would be no chipping on the black de-icing boot on the leading edges of the wings, as these are made of rubber and meant to inflate to break up any icing that occurs.
Great job on this model! Next time you're doing a sea-based diorama, consider spraying gloss varnish around where the aircraft will be splashed by water. It'll help with the realism.
What a great model you have done it really good, last year I was lucky enough to see a catalina flying, it was at a ww2 reenactment event called The Victory Show at Cosby. Ever since I thought it would be fantastic to do a model of it.
Thank you Andy means a lot, some builds are ok others not so , something goes wrong on every single build though. I’m just trying to be honest with the builds as I go. 👍
@@TheScaleModeler not a problem. I strongly believe in letting people know when they have done well . These days it seems that only the negative criticism comes thru ..which is really sad. I'm enjoying your uploads, thanks for your effort 😀
For just a short time at the hobby, you do real nice work!. Only a year? Looks like more experience than that. I don't mess with static display models too much anymore. I like the larger scale R/C models. But using the knowledge I have from plastic model building, I get some great looking flying models. Like the A6M Zero / Zeke, and the F4U.
Thank you well just over a year but watched a lot of RU-vid videos en route with some great modellers who have given their tips over. Like Scale-a-ton and Plasmo. Never done R/C but certainly keen on F4U’s not done any Japanese planes yet 👍
nice job, i learned a few things from you with this build, thanks. i would love to know the trick with the lighter and the "detail paint' , too bad you didnt show a vid. but no worries, the build is something to be proud of, ive been building for decades, off and on, let me tell you, keep it up and i hope you post more vids, btw, WE ALL BUILD DIFFERENTLY so dont worry about who likes it and who doesnt, your not going to please everyone, if you like the final product, THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS, keep building
Hi thank you! The lighter was just burning off superglue that had set on the wire I use thisto apply CA superglue to PE parts. Not too sure what you mean re detail paint. Everyone has been really kind with a few constructive comments and tips along the way. I'm bit long in the tooth to give a monkeys nowadays 😉
The flying boat had a tail wheel and was not a true amphibian. That is beaching gear. The amphibian version had retractable nose wheel undercarriage. In Canada we made the distinction of calling one the Catalina and the other the Canso.
Didn't expect the base you made at the end. Looks fantastic. Very nice build. Regarding nose weight, Liquid Gravity by deluxe materials is a great product. Subscribed 👍
