I think the rockwall are used to prevent erosion of the beach. In the netherlands it was also used to slowly reclaim land from the sea.

Each episode encourages me more of actually visiting Miami for vacation, Sunset City has to be one of my fav series❤

If someone hasn't mentioned already, those rock walls are to stop sand moving down the beach and eroding away. Finally I used something I learned from highschool!

You know you've gotta name one of those hotels the Vercetti. Perhaps the one that gave you $7mil dollars? You can't come this far into a Miami pastiche and not reference the OG. Great episode, love the changes.

The rock walls are called Groynes. They're used to prevent beach erosion. I think they're great at adding authenticity to the city. The walls are typically the same length though so you could probably make 1 wall and copy and paste it over and over again. Edit: You could also space them in more even increments since they lose effectiveness when theyre too close or too far apart

I've lived in Miami for most of my life, and while I'm too young to have been there in the 80's, I think this still feels faithful to the Miami I see today. Wonderful work, looking forward to seeing more.

Great build mate! I have been looking forward to the Miami Beach episodes since the series' humble beginnings, and I must say I am more than impressed by how this turned out! As for hotel name suggestions, I think one of the hotels could be named after Julia Tuttle. Julia Tuttle was the person who owned the land where Miami is located now, and founded the city. She was a citrus farmer, and had her fields on the east coast of Florida. in 1894-1895, something known as "the great freeze" happened in Florida, where pretty much all crops except the ones in Biscayne Bay (Now Miami) died. This made the rural area where Tuttle lived grow to a small town, and she convinced the Florida Eastcoast Railway's founder to extend the railway service down to the newly founded community. In 1896, Miami was incorporated as a city, and Julia Tuttle became known as "The Mother of Miami".

You should add something like the now run down Miami Marine Stadium where they had boat races and concerts on the water etc. I saw it on one of those abondoned places channels, and thought it was really neat.

You should add a nice custom police station on the beach side. Miami Vice was huge in the 80s and 90s. It’ll help land value as well. Also there were small schools on the beach side, near north side, for condo residents.

Remember those Red Bull Air Races hosted by different cities across the world? Maybe a build on the sea front featuring the blow up gates and spectator stands scattered about. Not sure if it’s possible to also create a flight path through the gates with small planes flying through them?

1980 was one of the worst hurricane seasons in the carribean. Maybe adding a neighborhood thats rebuilding after a hurricane/tropical storm would be interesting. Love this series.

Very neat stuff. I do honestly think a heritage tramway in old Sunset Beach could work really well, maybe one or two blocks away from the beach. A lot of cities in the US started getting heritage tramways or "Streetcar/Trolley lines" in the 1980's, using either old American trams, newly built replicas, or trams imported from abroad from places like Melbourne Australia. There is an absolutely fantastic Melbourne W class tram model by Zekiarsu who also made the trams for Oceania that would fit in perfectly as is. The Melbourne W-class was really common in cities all over the US in this period from Memphis to Portland. Heck even in Florida, Tampa has a heritage style tram line.

A couple of real life famous hotels in the Miami area were The Diplomat in Hollywood, it hosted the rat pack frequently, ronald regan, bob hope, and a bunch of other celebreties. You also have the Hotel Mutiny which was the hub for all things cocaine and illegal in the 80's, it was the hotel portrayed in Scarface. Then you also have Hotel Deauville which is where the Beatles famously played and stayed for the Ed Sullivan Show.

a graet video! I would suggest buildin a construction site on the beach. I dont know how much construction there were in the 80's but I think it will add a lot to the skiline of the beach

I think that The Ross would be a great name for the large 80s style hotel near the entrance of the hotel strip! Also I think that some rockwalls would be good on the beach but definitely not between every hotel. Also, at ram on the beach is an absolute must!

You should add a reference or a memorial to the surf side condo collapse in Miami. Even though it didn’t happen in the 80’s it’s a big part of Miami history

as someone currently in miami, and miami beach, and rewatching golden girls at the same time, this series has an even more special place in my heart and as someone who has followed the series since it’s beginning, it was rather surreal to walk down ocean drive and hop on the monorail and kinda feel like i’ve been here before? great work! :)

I think it is a nice place by the water. Maybe u can even build the helicopter port partial on the water. just like "Air Pegasus Heliport" in New York, or "HeliNY - Downtown Manhattan Heliport" also in New york. the rock walls u mentioned are called groynes and are a form of coastline protection. they can however accelerate the erosion on sorrounding beaches further down the coast.

Could you please Name one of the hotels “Clone Cat Hotel” Clone cat was founded in 1941 to help refugees in WW2 but after WW2 it went to more locations and became the most loved place to stay in many countries and their hotels are the most modern (in the 80s) and luxurious in all of the world. Miami wasn't really a casino town, but it did have a few bathing casinos. I'd like if the "La Quinta Inn" could be named "Jack's Beach resort and casino" inspired by the "Cook's bathing casino" But it could be that Florida had laws prohibiting casinos in the 80's thus they renamed to "Jack's Beach resort"

For the longest time, I referenced a book in my head that was about the history of Miami and how cool and similar your series has been. If i knew you were looking for research material I would've said something earlier! See if your library has the book "Miami Then & Now" by Arva Moore Parks and Carolyn Klepser. Its an amazing book that talks about the boom of miami. While mostly a picture book, it also tells about the history of each picture. One of my favorite "prototypes" of miami that never came into fruition was Villa Biscayne aka little Venice. John S Collins, a New Jersey native, created the Collins Canal to transport his Avacado crops to market quicker. It inspired residence to create waterfront venetian style homes with gondolas.

i like to think that the $7million you got for building that hotel was a kickback to the mayor/city from the owners, so they could repeal some environmental or building codes, to allow a hotel to be build. maybe the owner of the hotel is involved with the mob or runs a secret casino out of it? idk. I really look forward to your uploads, keep it up!

I loved the episode and was sad to see it end so quickly. I can't wait for when you go crazy with the further development of the area and give it a touch of your masterful detailing. That golf course sure is a cool idea, the map starts to remind me of Vice City, in a good way of course!

Great vid, interesting details you throw in there. I would think Miami (along with all of Florida) the beaches change yearly and most definitely per decade cuz of erosion and Hurricanes that pull sand/dirt out into the ocean. And then you add in the human element of wanting to build and expand lol

Even though they're not exactly functional as actual transit, having a blimp flying up and down the beach fit the atmosphere. There has been a Goodyear Blimp base in the Miami area for decades, so it wouldn't be that out of place if you can find the right model.

18:07 the hotel here with the teal roofing is definitely my favorite. If I had to name it I might go with something like “Harold Harold Inn” or “the Lenny inn” both of these are based off jokes in my friend groups, so they don’t make a ton of sense. I’m sure someone else has a better name for one. Also the triangle where the roads meet could be a good place for a park, maybe a bit of a poorly maintained kinda deal.

I would say that the first "Hilton" hotel you placed looks like something that might have built by a socialite of the 60s. Being first of its kind, I imagine that in the beginning the surrounding are was not yet built up and it was sort of a getaway from the city itself. Surrounded by a beach on one side and a lush park on the other, that has not been demolished for the sake of development. All the surrounding are built up around what once was a island getaway just on the coast of Sunset City. While the hotel still holds a place in the city history and is more seemed like a dated place, as it has not modernized much through the years because it just didnt have to. Now that all these new developements have pupped up around it in the decades that followed the once monopolised buisiness is now run by a memeber of the original family who has to come to tearms with the changing times. No longer is it the lone beach side getaway cassle of lucury on an lonely island paradice, but yet another hotel that has to somehow outshine its competition and the family name is not the only thing the managment can rely on. At least thats what the hotel is telling me.

In my humble opinion I think my last name is a great hotel naming idea. If there's no shame, please do Starbird Palms, or Hotel Starbird. Thank you!

There is a secondary usage of the rock groynes. See, under US law, the state or territory the beach is located in actually owns the entire beach up to the high tide mark, the area called 'wet sand', so it's typically actually administered by park services as a public park (unless under military use, then obviously that's all military jurisdiction and are typically off-limits; and parts can be leased from the government for development, like for commercial ports). The equal distance placing of the walls can be used to help park and city services though, since each section provides a neat area to take statistics from, making cleaning and waste management, safety and health services necessary, crime, etc., which helps determine the ideal placement of essential services. Police, clinics, emergency management, waste and cleaning services, etc.

Okay, I know it will be controversial, but I think that integrating te 7mil incident to the lore of the city would be amazing. So, I suggest creating a high-income gated community close by the river on that Nature Reserve you said is coming in the next video. Like it forced it's way inside the previously claimed land, cutting the nature reserve in a very distinct way. This would be the reason why the city received so many funds with that hotel, since the same Contractor onwed both lands, and secretly handed over funds from the hotel construction so the city council would create barrier on the expropriation of the land on the nature reserve and, later on, approve their plans of the gated community.

So those rock walls are called groins or groynes and they were used to prevent beach erosion. So in the picture you show you can see how the beach at that point is almost non existent. All I could find was a new York times article from around 1970 discussing a plan to pump sand into the beach to replenish it, and as part of the plan the beach would be made public and hotels would lose their private beaches. I'd have to do more research, but from what I can see it's likely this is the plan that went ahead and it's what got rid of the groins. Currently the beach is all public land to my knowledge. A lot of coastal resort towns in the US are facing this problem and it's because they built on the shore in the first place, beaches are naturally fluid and in the normal run of circumstances the sands shift back and forth. But the need to secure the land and beaches for private construction and the building of infrastructure like sea walls and drains from Biscayne bay has meant that the natural flow is disrupted permanently and the beaches are in a constant state of erosion. If they don't keep replenishing the beach it will eventually creep up to where the buildings are and take them down and now they've gotten to the point where they're running out of nearby sources of sands and cities are fighting for it. Won't be long before they have to start shipping it in from places like the Sahara as some beaches in Europe have already done. The groins themselves slowed down local sand loss but that meant disrupting the sand flow to other areas so that wasn't ideal either. In any case they formed defacto private beaches and disrupted the natural landscape as well as things like sea turtle nesting.

Actually those rock walls in the water are not there to divide the land of the properties. These are used for land reclamation activities. It’s therefore that the waves break early and the sand has the opportunity to lay down where it should and not spilt out to the ocean.

On the topic of Florida, my dad recently told a story of how when he travelled down to Key west in the 90s with his friend everyone thought they were gay, dad lore goes crazy

Maybe make one of the hotels you've build similar to the Hotel Deauville that hosted many pop culture icons (The Hotel Deauville hosted the Beatles and Frank Sinatra) in Sunset Beach. Maybe it could have a similar purpose in Sunset City?

Sounds exactly how the real world works. 🤣😂 And the rock walls out into the sea in 1980s Miami beach are called groynes. They're to stop the beach from being eroded completely when you get waves that come at an angle to the shore because it can only wash the sand as far as the next groyne where it banks up and can be redistributed more easily. I'm guessing that when they reclaimed a whole lot more beach later on, they put a huge breakwater at one end to stop the beach from being washed away. Therefore, the groynes are no longer needed.
