Hey, kAN, just an idea here; if you use a triple track system that runs from the water place up north west through the seed farm, cattle farm, go north up to the meet packing place, express agency, and then heading east to the iron works, you could use double tracks heading to all the other places on the map and have the frieght depot be the main yard for everything. Also, a company name could be Kentwood Active Northern Railway (KAN Railway).
Are you going to ask Hyce to help with logistics too with your other friends? It was always fun to listen to you and Hyce talk about whatever like a podcast while playing railroads online together.

In my own play through I’ve experimented with “one way” tracks that have far steeper grades than normal (7%-25% grade). On my double track from the freight depot, the tracks split off, one dives into the valley and the other switchbacks around. Just throwing out some interesting ideas.
Hey Kan, nice track run. Yeah, miss those 14 hour days laying track the old way...not. You can raise track height at well. You can also mark position of well with props, demolish it, add fill under well, replace well at a higher elevation. As you found out, water cars are very heavy and you gotta run loads and loads of water. 😢 Loading on a slope might cause issues. Have fun.😊
During some CMEs theres enough crap thrown at Earth for the Aurora to reach down to the Canadian / US border. Just pay attention to the solar storm strengths and you should be able to see some Aurora just by driving out into the country.... Take a AM radio with you, if you tune it right, you can "hear" the Aurora too.
It will be nice to see railroads online more often, I was playing myself like for a week on this map, it is not much difficult but it is boring doing it alone like everything :D If happens that you need help I can jump in to haul some cargo for ya :D For the cattle farm, you will need 100 straw bales, 100 water and 100 grain and on output you have 2 times 20 cattles. Also, cars for hauling grain require level 5 i think, so little bit of exp hunting is required before. Also at the meat factory you will have to bring coal as well, if I remember it have like 0/1000 coal storage and 0/50 cattle, output is 0/100 meat, so you will have to bring 30 beams and 60 rails to coal mine as well. Pretty much Iron industry must be connected as well as sawmill etc. Anyway, hope to see more of the Railroads online, keep up great channel and content as always
you can see the northern lights up at vermilion in Alberta about 2 hours north east of Edmonton i go to see my grandparents every winter and summer break and there nice but its normally on the drive there you see them
Downhill with Eureka i reached 48 for a while and when i hit 50 the whole train derailed so that might be the limit but some cars start getting bouncy at 30-35 (old hoppers for example) but up to 30 is a very stable speed, they improved that pretty well.
I remember trying to build this section of track like 5 times until I eventually gave up and made it something obscene like a 4-5% all the way up. Montezuma just barely made it with loaded 2 water cars, so I feel like a better engine will be able to handle it no problem.
As far as speed limits go from my personal experience. The small cars will derail at 30+ MPH while the large ones will stay on even up to 45 MPH. For the locomotives the fastest one can reach on a level grade is the Eureka which can now go 32 MPH. I’m not sure how fast you can go on straight track with all the trains, but it’s definitely above 40 for the big ones at least.
Just got back from a school trip in lceland and I have to say the Northern Lights are quite a spectacle, although they aren’t actually as bright as pictures show them to be
Wow this track looks so much better than mine, I just said screw it and did a 2% bridge straight down and ended up with a 60m curve at the back of the water pump. I would definitely say I fall into the category of preferring to run the trains rather than lay the track
ah yes, the 10f/3m sections of rails, and the trick with the X track to be able to make parallel tracks because the switches were not symmetrical.... and now my PTSD is back
If you want to see the northern lights in Canada you can get a via rail train to Churchill. The tickets aren’t too expensive because the service is subsidised to serve the first nations people who are also really friendly.
im so happy to see kan playing this again and I agree the new map looks really cool so far. hoping you go with MESS (Mountain Empire Shipping Service) for the railroad name, ngl. thought it was the coolest name out of all of them posted on the last RRO video.
You could have kept it at 2% grade by having the track turn and changing direction, instead of having everything in a straight line. Also, you could make a hump yard for the Water Staion. Save up, buy like 10 water cars, load them and hump them into a yard, and come and get what you need.
I would like to watch all the grinding that you tend to do between episodes! Doesnt need voice over, or any editing really, maybe have it on a second channel if you dont want that here. But I want to watch you run the trains more than just one time. Anybody else?
I remember when I was connecting my loop that went through the lumber place, back down through the water well and sawmill, I had problems setting up a track that was in a good spot for getting water because of the terrain right by the water well, and another thing I built then, was a four percent(or maybe three, don't remember exactly lol)line to connect the sawmill and wheat farm, and now when I sell things from the sawmill, I can barely transport 6 big cars of beams with the help of betsy(my main locomotive is a eureka at this point), so I probably should have just built a long track at like 2 percent instead to transport a lot more at once.
Oh, I see you had to do that too lol, glad to see I was not the only one that made a 4% line there. And wait, what do you mean no intended dev track spots??? there are multiple valleys perfect for running track, there are three I can think of, the oil field, the coal mine, and the ironworks.
Some info about speed limits: Locomotive top speeds can be seen in the help wiki in game. Press the help key (h by default) to open it. The fastest locomotive currently is Eureka at 30 mph, though reaching top speed with most locomotives has been difficult since they added cutoff simulation to the game. In my own playthrough, I have a really long 2% line that runs very straight. I posted a speed limit of 40 mph because the cars start doing kick-flips between 43 and 47 mph
Not sure if it's worth connecting to the cattle farm yet. Sure you can deliver the supplies, but you won't get anything out of it for a while. The only car that can transport cattle is tier 5. Then again you don't have that many options right now. Connecting the logging camp to the sawmill will be tough and pretty much requires a better engine.
Boy do I remember the painstakingly exhausting process of laying track back in the early days And imagine if you picked the shay to run the longest tracks in the game
If you use the "P" Key, you can see the time in the player menu. Also, if you really want to differentiate the Aurora Falls cars from yours and you wanna use the four letter combo, try something like AFRX for the Loaner cars as "X" in the reporting mark on real cars means they are loaned cars from either the industry or another railway.
The aurora has no set latitude where it's visible. How far south it can be seen completely depends on the strength of the coronal mass ejection from the Sun that causes it. It doesn't happen often but the aurora was visible in the early spring of 2022 as far south as Pennsylvania, Ohio, South Dakota, Oregon. You can't really plan a trip too far in the future to travel north to see it because solar activity is so variable. The aurora is more prevalent during times of increased sun spot activity, but you still have to be lucky enough for a flare to be aimed towards Earth.
@KAN - umm you can build foundations for your buildings, and a foundation under the track to keep it level and a smooth transition up and over the hill to the water tank at the station
I would say it depends on the load, the length of the train, and the top speed. If your top speed is low or consistent speed is good, or you have a long train, then I would say it is better to have a consistent grade. If you have a high top speed, and a short train, then flat sections to build up speed and then using that speed to make it up short steep sections can be better.
Now that you have done it the right way. You should put a water source close to the wheat farm. Realistically there wouldn't be a farm with no water. Your whole session will be hauling water.
You can hit 70mph on the downhill, max powered speed is ~30mph. Long splines have larger rail segments, so the ride will be bouncier and the small cars tend to derail at about 35-40 mph.
I built a double track mainline that goes all around the map and is connected to every industry. There's a video on my channel in which I run 450 around it. (only the main, not the branch lines) Edit: Eureka had been buffed to 30 (29) miles per hour.
You don't need to travel north to see the northern lights there is usually at couple of nights ever few years where they are visible anywhere in Canada. Just pay attention to the news and it will usually tell you a day or too in advance.
I feel the entire water freight needs a rebalance. The amount of water needed to fill a train with hay bales and/or grain is monstrous. I placed the water well directly across the track from delivery point. I fill the car at the same time as I empty the car. before they added the water freight I delivered trains of seed and had trains of grain and hay bales. They added the water and when I noticed the disparage in amount of water needed in relation to train size needed to fill. I liked my 20 car trains
Northern lights, probably best place and time is september and in Yellowknife (Northwest Territories)......according to the internet...and as we all know, the internet never lies.
The game might need to let you blast or cut away parts of the terrain to really become like real railroads. Because using a fill is one option, but digging a little bit can ease the amount of elevation the track needs too, obviously.
I dont know what so many People have with the water well to freight depot route. I have a very relaxed 4% Route, that even has some flat spots. Can someone tell me where that cliff is? Because i would be interested to see where everyone else is going :D
@spikeborn1984 Try around the Afton State park area, hike in and spend a night or two, it's dark and quiet. Don't forget about a trip to Slema's icecream, well worth the trip just for that.
