I built a rocket engine in my garage - it makes shock diamonds!!!

This rocket engine is by far my most advanced propulsion project to date, being the first to consistently achieve supersonic exhaust. This project has been a great educational process as I learned about basic rocket science. I hope you can also learn something new as you follow me in this adventure of engineering and discovery!

Forming the nozzle with the tubes is genius! I’ll have to do that when building mine

I salute you young man. That is a mighty fine rocket. Thank you very much for allowing us to to see you do this .. amazing that you can build hypersonic rocket. In your basement with stuff.. 1 to 10 I give it a 9.5 keep tweaking on it.❤ Congratulations this is my most favorite rocket on RU-vid at this time..

I feel like the combustion chamber size could play a role and why the smaller tube worked better than a larger one. I believe the gas would lose speed and burn out completely before it reaches the nozzle. But idk.

Nice!!! you could try those paintball tanks as air source. Some of them can handle more than 3000psi and the compressor to fill them are not that expensive ~300$. Instead of liquid oxygen you could try nitrous oxide like they use in hybrid rocket engine.

eventually, add inside the chamber, just before the nozzle, a "wall" of tubes to reduce turbulences at the entry of the nozzle !

They are called MACH diamonds

Shock diamonds are a sign of inefficiency.

How so? Not at all trying to hate, I have no qualifications at all, but aren't they just a sign of supersonic airflow?
@user-by2io7zv2t
@user-by2io7zv2t 17 часов назад
@@opalmams9775 Shock diamonds form when the supersonic exhaust from a nozzle is slightly over-expanded, which are a sign of the exhaust being too pressurized.

Have you tried to make a ro cket engine that uses a solid rocket fuel there are ways to make surprisingly cheap solid rocket fuel that can get a decent amount of power ( for what it is ) even without a nozzle

Nice work, could you pls tell me the cost of all of this and how you crafted the brass combustion chamber
@AydenWardellAerospace
@AydenWardellAerospace День назад
This project cost about $300 and used a number of recycled parts. It would probably cost about $500 if everything was brand new and most of that would be in the brass pipe fittings. The brass nozzle was made using a 1" bar machined down on a lathe. It was then attached to a stainless steel chamber from a previous project

Awesome, next time you should use pure oxygen in gas. 🔥🔥🔥 Do you know @notmadrocketscientist1902's channel? He is doing a project similar to yours, his engines are getting better and better, but I think he doesn't use microcontrollers and that makes him progress slowly.

I would personally attempt a pulse detonation engine first, like on the (modified) rutan long-EZ
