I think the tape kept them from going deeper. I’d be willing to bet the cross bow bolt would have gone deeper or even poked through the other side if it wasn’t for that tape in the middle.

i used to work at a home depot and he’s right. nobody (including me) knows what they’re doing. there’s very little training on the departments when you get hired there. you are expected to just know stuff and pick it up as you go.

Next time try cutting the tape into two halves before firing, that way it'll function like a sabot and fall away when you shoot it, allowing your projectiles to fly unimpeded. Obviously you'll have to make the inner layer less sticky for it to work, though.

It would have been nice to see shots that were taken from more than like 2 inches away from the target.

Your experience at Home Depot reminded me of Hank Hill when he went to the Hardware store and got so pissed that the employee didn't know anything.

To answer the question: The "weight" of the projectile cancels out. It resists acceleration at the beginning, and also at the end. The energy applied by the canon is roughly the same for all. In other words, the lighter projectile probably goes faster. The profile of the object does matter; the bolt would have gone deeper without the tape. We would see an interesting compression happen in slow motion. This might be an interesting experiment to collaborate with another channel that has access to a high speed camera. Perhaps Tauflaudermaus or Smarter Every Day.

The reason they all went roughly the same distance into the gel is because the tape was positioned roughly the same distance back on all of them. You have to tape it in a way that it doesn’t create that edge that stops it from going in, or find objects that fit more snugly, or place the tape further back. Also, to have truly conclusive results you need to be firing from the same distance back each time. I think a carrot would work really well in there if you shaved it down properly.
