⚙️ SHOW NOTES: I built an outdoor bench for relaxing and taking in the scenery behind the shop. It’s no ordinary bench. It’s built to last using the same mortise and tenon joinery found in the usual indoor fine furniture I love to make. The bench build also features using my new Multi-Router for cutting all the mortise and tenons with great accuracy, efficiency and ease. And I made the bench out of beautiful and weather resistant Southern Cypress for long lasting durability.
⚙️ Build your own with our Full-size Plans and Online Course based upon the more traditional hollow chisel mortising approach and techniques. Offered in both bench and swing design format: www.epicwoodworking.com/produc...

Thanks Dan! I had my doubts about how it was all going to come together. And the choice to not have any music for the first 11 minutes during the actual build process was intentional and it felt right to add it beginning with the glue up phase…maybe that will become a regular move. Hi Tom. That slider is a sweet looking saw. Finally...another woodworker using a multi-router. That thing is the stuff. You have one of the perfect applications for it...upper and lower back rails. I generally do loose tenons on everything. I run them on the table saw for width, planer for thickness and sometimes the router table to round over. I usually make up several sticks to keep on hand and cut to length when needed. I build some slatted furniture and this thing rocks at repeat mortises like that. Great build by the way. Thanks for the video.
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking Год назад
Hey Thanks! Yes I do like the slider, the Felder K700. I have yet to make the most of it, but amazing potential and applications for making jigs that attach to the slider, for precision and efficiency with multiples, and very safe way of working too. I do love the Multi Router too, glad to finally have one! I know what you mean about the floating tenons. It does make faster not to have to think about the added tenon length, and there is a little more setup. From a couple other guys I heard the same thing, mostly using it as a mortiser. I wonder if Woodpeckers, now that they own it, will consider offering premade floating tenons like the Domino. Although most probably like to make their own because it’s not to much trouble to make a run of them and you can customize the width and length easily. Do you have a favorite material you use to make your floating tenons? Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching! 👍😎
@TallEvaGuy
@TallEvaGuy Год назад
@@EpicWoodworking I bought the domino sticks when I had the 700. I liked cutting them to the length I wanted. If Woodpeck could get the price that was suitable, it may be worth a try for them to market some widths. It is easy to cut the width and thickness I need though. In the beginning I used the router table to round the edges. On the last few projects I just used the block plane to bevel my edges with approximately four facets. Kind of semi round on the edges. I don’t make my tenon stock to fit very snug on the width. I give myself a tiny bit of wiggle. The material I use is generally cutoffs of the material I am using for a project. Nothing scientific. Just being thrifty. I’m glad Woodpeck is releasing some new videos of the machine. The old video of Jerry with Lorraine Tool was a little dated. I appreciate you stepping out on the limb with the multi-router and the Felder. Seems some of the online and magazine community will shame some folks for using expensive equipment. I can appreciate that but also appreciate thinking outside the box of how may different ways a project can be created. Thanks again.

Hey Tom, I have no idea if this is an interest of yours for a sort of new design idea but have you ever deigned or built a canoe or a small boat (nothing too extensive lol, I know that’s a much bigger undertaking)? I’ve always loved the beauty of handcrafted wooden canoes and boats. It would be truly “epic” to see you take your knowledge and skills (in both design and implementation) into something like that with your own creative flourishes. I have no idea if you have my interest in this but it would be amazing to see the whole process if you ever did decide to do it with all the knowledge of different woods and their beauty. The lily pad table made me think of this because of the whole organic and creative aspect being brought to life. Anyway you probably have many things already lined up so just tossing another idea out there😄Thanks for your generosity and time in sharing so much experience with all of us. Hands down the best woodworking channel I’ve seen (and I’ve watched many of them).
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking Год назад
Oh man, you’ve read my mind! That’s something I want to do badly but won’t be able to work it in for a while. It’s been one of my side hobbies and interests to research designs of small boats as we are not far from the ocean here and I would love to get out there once in a while, explore the coast and islands and do some fishing. So when I do get around to it, I will definitely pour all I have into building it, and videotaping the process. In the meantime, the success and growth of our RU-vid channel will have a lot to do with determining how soon I could incorporate building a boat project like that. Hopefully posting more edited videos like this one will help make it happen sooner! Thanks again! 👍
@victoryak86
@victoryak86 Год назад
@@EpicWoodworking that would be amazing when it is the right timing. It’s neat to think of the possibilities, but there are so many. My father built a small sailboat decades ago from a kit (called a Mirror Dinghy) and I’m in the middle of refinishing it thoroughly, learning as I go. But the idea of making your own design would be awesome and more interesting and rewarding I guess. Anyway looking forward to all the content coming. Your teaching is great since it’s so much more thorough although the short vids are great too. Hopefully some of these companies will sponsor your channel as it couldn’t be a better advert for their tools. Unfortunately our society has a much shorter attention span than in the past so everything is these little “info bites” but of limited value when you’re trying to learn more than just the basics. All the best Tom. I may join the “wood” soon as well 😄

There are so many things to learn by watching you build that bench. Ill watching this a few times to pick up all the little things that are just taken for granted (IE. use a wet cloth over the end of a 1" spatular to remove glue from right in those corners). Did you build the bench to justify the flash router thingy?

Thanks Danny! I’m so glad you found it useful. That bench is part of our Online Courses and Full-size Plans, so we wanted to feature an edited video to hopefully get more views and interest. Tom, this is such a sophisticated design compared to so many other benches. Incorporating the front seat rail into the series of seat slats is just one feature that sets it apart. This is definitely on my project list. I am curious about the parts marking system you use, especially because I think I have seen others using a similar "language". A good example is at 8:35 of the video. Is there a place online where this is explained?
@darrylbhopkins
@darrylbhopkins Год назад
Tom, that is a really nice bench! Is it possible to build this bench using your plans if you don't have that fancy machine? I do have a bench top hollow chisel mortiser, as well as regular chisels, a shoulder plane, etc.
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking Год назад
Thanks Darryl! Yes, absolutely, all of our drawings show more standard mortise and tenons and are best used with a hollow chisel mortiser. This was a “one off” method because I just got the Multi-Router and I was just showing how the process could be modified to use the Multi Router. So short answer is you have all you need to follow along on the drawings (and with the video series option), if you want to make it! Thanks again 👍😎

What I noticed with the Multi Router is the templet is down low where it collects sawdust from the router. Does the bearing end up rolling over the sawdust causing an irregular shaped tenon ? The Panto Router has the templets high on the machine away from any sawdust.
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking Год назад
I think that was a problem before Woodpeckers bought Multi-Router a couple years ago and designed and added in a dust collector. I only know it with the dust collector and there was not any issue with sawdust messing up the tenon. Must have been a problem in the past. Thanks for watching! 👍😎

Tom. Thanks for your earlier replies. I want to make a gate for the deck of my daughter's new house. I'm looking at making saddle joints at the four corners. Is a three 1/2" finger joint, like an open mortise & tenon, stronger than four 3/8" fingers? The fingers are to be 3" wide by 3" long on the ends of 1.5" x 3" timber frames. I know there is a much larger long grain to long grain gluing area with the 3/8" fingers. But, are the thinner 3/8" fingers much more prone to breaking than the 1/2" fingers?
@EpicWoodworking

Hi Jim, sorry for the delayed reply. I hope your question wasn’t too time sensitive. If not, I think I would just go with the three 1/2” finger joint…easier to cut, plenty strong and functions great. Hope that helps…for what it’s worth. 😎 Thanks for watching! 👍

Hardly any offset there, and if you sat in it I think you would be surprised how that is a non-issue to its comfort. But making them flush could certainly be done. My primary reason for offsetting (less than 1//8”) is to have the shoulder of the joint protected from the weather, and to not have to be concerned with the inevitable seasonal movement out of flush over time.
